*defers writing his essay proposal on Herodotus' Histories another few minutes by posting this*

Back at the time MiaB aired it was made pretty explicit that Voyager's crew didn't know about the Dominion, even though they'd been swept away by the Caretaker a good six months after first contact. And at the time, with a bit of grumbling, I remember the consensus being reached that the Dominion's existence must have been kept under wraps and hence Voyager didn't know who they were.

A few things now spring to mind that cause this theory to be increasingly useless. For starters, I caught a re-run of the great cinematic masterpiece "Parturition" the other day. In the teaser, IIRC, Paris is training Kes in shuttle piloting, and the simulation involves Kes dodging stock footage of *gasp* two Jem'Hadar bugs.

Now, in a Cinescape interview from Picardo about "Flesh and Blood" we get this little juicy bit.

quote:
The holograms are lead by a character named Iton, who is a Bajoran. They all look like aliens we've seen in the Alpha Quadrant, because they are from the Voyager database. [...] It will be the first time that our Voyager audience will see certain aliens that appeared in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. For example, the Jem'Hadar.

Now, I agree that Voyager could've recieved Jem'Hadar info from SFC with their "mail" soon after MiaB (indeed, didn't we see an O-gram of the Jemmie battleship at some point last year?) and then a few eps later given away Jemmie info to the Hirogen. But's it's all too fishy for my tastes...

The funny thing is, they think you hate them back, when in fact, you just couldn't be bothered to care. Now in Ireland, it's a different story. At least we had the common decency to wait until the English invaded before we started hating them. I guess the Canadians are hating you in advance..."

Maybe it was just the Maquis in the dark about the Dominion? After all, they were off hiding in bases fighting the Cardassians. Perhaps news didn't reach them.

*point of information--still haven't started Herodotus*

That might explain the Maquis not knowing, but what about the Doctor? I mean, for him to not know begs the question--Is the Doc independent of the ship's computer to the point in which basic political information (apparently declassified enough that Paris can weave it into holodeck simulations for civilians) is not available to him? I mean, his program is presumably designed to check through the ship's library for information on various diseases, so why not "current events" from the time of Voyager's disappearance? He's already shown the ability to access non-medical stuff, like all that stuff on the social habits of various species and all sorts of other gems.

The Doctor might not have access to the entire computer system for security reasons. Sickbay aboard a Starfleet vessel sees a lot of non-Starfleet people pass through it, and a fully connected EMH might be turned into a conduit for sensitive information by clever patients.

But how sensitive is information you've already shared with a two-year old Ocampa?

Well, sensitive in the general term. You wouldn't want to beam aboard a wounded Roumulan only to have him get your command codes, fleet activity charts, and secret recipe for baked alaska out of your unsuspected holographic doctor. It seems simpler to just limit the EMH to the medical parts of the database, rather than giving it free reign through the system. After all, a normal EMH would never need to know anything else.

This, by the way, is my explanation for why the Doctor uses PADDs and always called the bridge to find out what the hell was going on during the first season or two.

The Jem'Hadar ships seen might have been there just for the purpose of "computer display a random assortment of ships to fight from the computer's database"

The information on the Jem'Hadar Attack Ships in Voyager's computer systems may be been for information in case they were encountered. Target acquisition and recognition are the most probable reasons for the ships to be in the database. Intelligence may be another.
