Was it mentioned in TVH?

There's one scene (DVD Time index 0:25:10) where Kirk says "Let's hear the probe's transmission". He says one word before this which sounds vaguely like "Nyota".

Can anyone confirm this?

He says, "Can you let us hear the probe's transmission?" Turn on the subtitles. [Smile]

Seriously, though, with them on it's quite obvious. I listened to it first without them, and I heard "Nyota." I only read along as he spoke one time and now I can't hear "Nyota" anymore. What I find more amusing is that the Probe's signal is subtitled, "Screeee!"

Incidentally, the name Nyota was chosen for Uhura by William Rostler in his long-forgotten book, Star Trek II Biographies. In an article reprinted in The Best of Trek #13, Rostler relates how he got both Gene Roddenberry's and Nichelle Nichols's respective approvals for the name. That's good enough for me, even if it never got on screen.

I still don't understand why everyone is so adamant that Uhura has to have more than one name...

People with only one name are fundamentally evil.

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

I don't think anyone is "adamant" that she have more than one name... but very few people have one name now, and there's no precedent for one-named humans being common in the future. She is African (specifically Bantu), and they normally have two names like 99% of the rest of people on Earth. So it's logical that Uhura would have a first name, even if not a strict requirement.

Who says she's Bantu? And I'm sure there are groups in Africa (among other places) that haven't adopted the tradition of the surname...

She speaks Swahili. How many names do the majority of people who speak Swahili have?

I have three names and a roman numeral.

In The Making of Star Trek, it says, "Communications Officer Uhura is an African, a citizen of the Bantu Nation of United Africa." Sticking with canon, though, her native tongue is Swahili, the most widely spoken Bantu language and the lingua franca of the African east coast. The most parsimonious assumption is that Uhura is therefore Bantu.
