OK so I was looking at some trek news and I stumbled across news about that online fan film project New Voyages - the one where they 'recast' the original series characters - not the one on the Exeter... err called Exeter I think.

Anyway - wow - I can't believe all the people clamouring to be a part of it.

Grace Lee Whitney, Walter Koenig, George Takei, David Gerrold (writer of Troubles with TribbleS), the writer of "Far Beyond the Stars" - a writer that wrote some scripts for Star Trek Phase II and D.C. Fontana!

What's the quality of this one like?

... Well, they have decent sets, good sfx, good costumes, usual amateur acting... and really weird scripts [Smile]

I mean, last one, no one could understand without special "episode timeline FAQ" [Smile]

I've seen some of it. Personally, I can't get over the rotten acting. That, and the Elvis clone playing Kirk.

Is this the one we watched the trailer for not too long ago... where they beam down and find the wrecked saucer of the Kongo?

If that's it, I definitely remember the impressive sets and SFX. The captain is really bad, though.

No, that's Exeter. In this one they go back in time through the Guardian of Forever and find Commodore Jefferies living on Earth in present times, with the Constellation's shuttlecraft in his garage. Also, somehow the Planet Killers (more than one now) are connected to the Guardian, and there's some kind of massive war going on across multiple temporal fronts that ultimately requires the Pike-era, TOS-era, and Movie-era Enterprises and their crews to team up in a gigantic CGI fanboy-blown wad of crap. Ick.

And yeah, Kirk is played by a professional Elvis impersonator. (I am not kidding.)

Well, there's not even a complete second episode yet, actually. "The Tressaurian Intersection" is still in post-production, though it's being released in segments and the first two (the teaser and Act I) have been released already on www.starshipexeter.com, with the rest forthcoming.

The quality of this second episode, especially in the realms of story and VFX, is markedly improved in comparison to the first, "The Savage Empire." Still, as mentioned, the acting is quite amateur. But hey, it's free, right?

Actually, it's Enterprise's shuttlecraft, and it's TNG-era Enterprise-A. Yes. TNG era. That Kirk we see there is supposed to be that ressurected Kirk wandering around in TNG era.

And, yes, James Cawley is a proffesional Elvis impersonator. Not that I hold that against him [Cool]

Isn't there a fan made episodes of the original series that had about 5 episodes?

My feeling is that you are indeed probably thinking of New Voyages, but they too have only released two episodes thus far, "Come What May" and "In Harm's Way." Others are supposedly on the way, though.
