Have any of the Trek movies ever been nominated or better yet won any Academy Award before?

Nothing for TWoK?

What was it up against that year - I reckon it could have won for best visual effects!?!

Well, it was released 1982, so I guess it would have been considered in 1983 - in which year ET won, and Blade Runner and Poltergeist were nominated.

What?

For kicks, the winners of the Academy Awards for 1982:

Best Picture: Gandhi
Best Actor: Ben Kingsley
Best Supporting Actor: Louis Gossett, Jr.
Best Actresss: Meryl Streep
Best Supporting Actress: Jessica Lange
Best Art Direction: Gandhi
Best Cinematography: Gandhi
Best Costume Design: Gandhi
Best Director: Richard Attenborough (For, surprisingly enough, Gandhi.)
Best Editing: Gandhi
Best Makeup: Quest For Fire
Best Original Score: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Best Original Song Score: Victor/Victoria
Best Original Song (This is different how? Beyond me.): An Officer And A Gentleman
Best Sound: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Best Sound Editing (Whatever that is.): E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Best Visual Effects: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Best Original Screenplay: Gandhi

So, it was not a good year for films that were either not set in India or didn't feature aliens cuter than Leonard Nimoy.

Yeah, TWOK was pretty clearly overshadowed by Blade Runner, technically. Honestly, while TWOK has a few good gee whiz shots, the effects aren't really that good from a technical standpoint. There are a lot of garbage mattes visible, you can see stars through the ships in some shots, and the redoctored warp-drive effect from TMP sucks ass.

Is there art direction or effects direction? The Nebula scenes are of course brilliant! Even the bit with the Enterprise sidling up alongside regula 1 station is fantastic. We don't get effects like that any more. No realisation of size and mass etc.

I dunno, I thought it was a lot better than it was in TMP. At least the stars didn't form an orderly circle around the Enterprise.

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

Those weren't stars...just a light effect from the warp.

The problem with the TWOK warp is that they took the TMP shot and did a really crappy matte job on it to add their own streak star effect. I never liked ILM's painted "rainbow trail" warp effect. I prefered Trumbull's streak effect (minus the tunnel of lights). Rumor has it they wanted to do the rubber-band warp effect make famous by TNG but there wasn't time for experimentation, thus the streak.
