Some of you may remember a drawing I did a while back for a Ferengi blockade runner, the Golnar class

It was meant to be fast, nimble, and lethal, as well as have large cargo capacity. I really liked the design, but afterwords it just seemed to be lacking.

Among the biggest complaints I had was the fact that the sides were too narrow in comparison to the central section. In my opinion, they needed to be wider. Second, the straight edge of the inside of the outer sections was too simple, and I wanted some way to break it up. And third, the details on the central section seemed lacking in some sections, especially around the bridge and those rear shuttlebay doors.

So last week I started work on Golnar Mk. II

Currently a work in progress, I've been trying to adapt some of the changes I wanted to the design. The sides are certainly much wider then the middle now, and the rear isn't quite as long and drawn out, making the engines more practical. There have been the addition of cargo bay doors to the sides as well, with a shuttlebay-type door added to the little notch in the front, and a large door added on top of the bulkiest area. The center of each side section is now broken up with the cutting off of the hard edge at the rear, which runs in line with the pylons connecting to the central section. The center section is noticeably smaller, but the details at the rear, especially the new shuttlebay, I think are much improved.

I'm undecided over which version I prefer, I think I still lean more toward the original. If I were to fix the second, I'm going to fix the very front modules a bit, make them more like the original, and maybe fiddle with the center section.

By the way, I know someone is going to ask, but the right side is the front.

I'm seriously liking this. It has lots of similar features to the D'kora Class... just enough to give us hints of all the goodness that is Ferengi, but definitely still being its own distinct ship.

Very nice.

I have to say, though, that I think I like the center section on the original drawing better. I like the strut connects better, as well as the aft section. The sides are definitely better looking on the new drawing though.

I really like the side hulls, but right now the center hull looks too much like the Droid Fighter from Episode I.

I did notice a bit of the Star Wars styling in the first design after I had drawn it, but my original inspiration was merely the two Ferengi designs we knew: D'Kora marauder and the Ferengi shuttlecraft. The sides are based heavily off the D'Kora, with the center being based off the shuttlepod (especially with the 'prongs' sticking out of the front).

And I have no clue what the heck you're talking about, Shik.

I said that it looks like a Narn ship.

LOL, Shik! I thought of the Narn ship, too, but didn't mention it. (Actually, though, I'm pretty sure it's this one. [Razz] )

Ehhh....the T'Loth is more vertical. 359's ship seems to be flatter, thus the Thentus & Dag'Kar.

I just realized now but the T'Loth looks like its made of star destroyer parts! The two sides look like SD hulls and it even has a similar bridge tower.

That would be true, if "Babylon 5" hadn't used CGI from the very beginning, and thus never had the opportunity to have any models to kitbash in the first place. [Wink]

Anyway, I never commented on The359's model! I think it's a great concept. We've never seen many Ferengi ships at all, aside from the Marauder and that one shuttlepod. (The ENT ship doesn't count, because it's so far removed and the ship design lineages of that show are so fouled up anyway.)

Do you have any idea of the scale of this ship yet? I assume it'd have to be a few hundred meters long in order to be a decent cargo ship with those wings. In fact, that might be the only design flaw, considering that this ship is supposed to be a blockade runner (i.e. for smuggling).

Otherwise, this ship definitely looks sleek, fast, and nimble despite its apparently bulky cargo pods.

Once you're done with this, you'll have to design an FCA customs service interceptor for this ship to evade! [Wink]

For size I'd guess something between 200m and 300m. It doesn't leave a lot of room for cargo, but my figuring is that the ship is meant to get in, get something, and get out as quickly as possible, and something large would take too much time.
