Quite an interesting question came up in my Sci-Fi class yesterday...

We were covering "The Andromeda Strain," by Michael Crichton. In Chapter 4, we discovered an oddity. The chapter covers a character who must find the binary code for a number, which is actually a telephone number. In one version, the number is 87, and the graphics in the book agree. In another version (my version), the number is still 87, but the binary code in the graphics is actually for 222. In yet another version, the number is 222, and the graphics agree. Does anyone know why this is?

Anyway, this was a fine book. Anyone else read it?

That's one of my favorite books...I can't find my copy at the moment, though. What's the binary version of each number?

"We were leaving New York this morning and we were checking in at the gate at the airport and the attendant said, 'You must be musicians,' and I said, 'Yes,' and she asked, 'What's the name of your band?,' and I said, 'We're called the Statesmen,' and she said, 'Oh, I've heard of you!'. I think if we'd said, you know, 'We're the Green Egg,' or something, she would have said the same thing." - John Linnell

I couldn't even begin to guess regarding the numbers. Different editions, I imagine.

As for the book, I read it awhile ago. Not bad. The movie is rather interesting. It's probably my favorite Crighton book, though that isn't necessarily high praise.

Hmm...it appears that I did guess, despite my claim. Oh well.

87 is 01010111.
222 is 11011110.

WELL YOU ASKED, DIDN'T YOU?!!?
