I've just finished watching the first season again. What in the world happened? Why do good shows keep turning into garbage? It's... just sad. Does anyone know how the show changed so much and who was responsible?

Me being me, and you being you, I'm just going to blame George W. Bush, because it is an election year.

It was Tribune, starting a trend which continued with Andromeda. Long story short, the suits financing the show liked the first season, but felt that it could be better with the requisite tweaks. Among them, ditching the far superior star of the show and replacing him with a younger, better-looking person and re-writing the whole show around him. Gone too are the older actors and their agendas - the show was to become a more straightforward good-versus-evil show with one-dimensional villains, who used to be layered, evolving people.

And of course, rounding everything out is the systematic firing of all the show's original producersand replacing them with people who took the show in their own direction - EVERY YEAR. The original cast was also slowly removed, eventually leaving only the show's main villain to become a shadow of his first season greatness.

By the end of the third season I'd given up on the thing, to be vaguely brought back by the fourth season, and then totally turned off again by the beginning of the final season. I think the biggest bitch-slap of the show was bringing Boone back in the fifth season, not doing anything with him beyond that episode (in which they mis-characterized him and his story completely), and then conveniently killing him off off-screen when he wasn't available - and bringing back his replacement AGAIN in an even MORE implausible way.

*AAAAAHHHH*, that felt good. Nothing like ragging on a show which was so good at the beginning, but was destroyed bit by bit in what was essentially a four-year long car crash. [Smile] Next up: Andromeda.

Question: How did you watch first season EFC?
Did they release it on DVD or something, hopefully?
