I'm still not willing to get excited about this one yet, I've been burned before by trailers. Still it all looks spot on faithful (especially Dr. M), though there's something very odd about the tone of the footage...I can't quite place it.

Has there been any word on how they're handling the ending? I remember a few years back when it was still in development hell there was talk of changing it because of 9/11. Hopefully they've changed their minds.

Regardless, I'd be very surprised if Alan Moore approves of the final product.

Well, it seems to be highly unlikely they can match the comic. I mean.. a movie is a fundamentally different medium, and Watchmen is like the definition of what a comic can be. So yes, I share those reservations.

I think the 'tone' you mention is the 'epic' music and style, whereas the comic is very much "non-epic".. most of the costumed characters are gritty, troubled people, and not very glamorous at all. As a first trailer, it might work, but I hope we'll get that "past glory" feel from the comic too.

There are probably three major 'issues' with making a movie from this:
- The massive background stories presented as newspaper clippings and other exerpts in the comic.
- The style of wrapping up parts of the story with (musical) quotes. It gives the whole story some kind of significance that I can't quite place, but it's a very distinct element.
- The pirate comics. It's used in a similar fashion to the quotes, giving the whole story another level of significance.

There's definitely good stuff too. Dreiberg's ship looks great, Doctor Manhattan looks really good, and they even did the weird Mars scene. I don't know if I like Ozymandias as a kid in leather, but hey, let's give it a go.

I'm pretty sure the Black Freighter segment is going to be an extra on the DVD. As for the backstory, that's what montages, flashbacks, newspaper clippings on the wall and tv new reports going on in the background are for.
Just in that trailer we can see a good chunk of Dr.M's history.

Apparently, as well as the animated Black Freighter DVD featurette, there'll be one with Hollis Mason's Behind The Mask presented as some sort of video documentary. And maybe even a Special Edition with those features edited into the main movie.

That's sort of what worries me, it all sounds too good to be true...

And yes, I think the music is what's giving off the odd mood. Until now I never thought what sort of score Watchman should have to set the right tone...I still don't. I have a hard time imagining how they'll balance it all.
