I know we've seen the cast lists for the upcoming Transformers movie, but this to me was the first solid proof of progress being made:
quote:
Ospreys filmed for 'Transformers' movie
Two Bell Boeing CV-22 Osprey helicopters were filmed in flight at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., late last month for the upcoming movie 'Transformers.' Other military aircraft are also being filmed at Holloman and at nearby White Sands Missile Range. The movie, which is based on the Transformers line of toys and companion TV series, is being directed by Michael Bay. It is scheduled for release in 2007.

This was an internal news posting at Boeing today, so I don't have an external link. So, do you suppose the Ospreys are portraying real Ospreys or Transformers? [Big Grin]

I'm hoping that all the TFs in this movie will be based on REAL machines, and their associated licensing. Except the Alternators line, nothing has beat the original G1 for real-world feel, and I hope they create somethign similar here.

There would obviously be a lot of money and licensing issues for the various vehicles being used, but hey, it IS a Michael Bay film...

The TFs are going to be real machines, at least from what I gathered from news bits from last week. Unfortunately, they aren't quite the ones G1 fans are used to. Optimus is a fire truck. Devestator is a tank. Soundwave is a boombox... that doesn't change size. And Bumblebee is a Camero? Blasphemy, I say!

Yeah, but what's Galvatron? How big or small will he besmall enough to fit on the Excelsior's bridge? And most importantly, will he laugh maniacally? [Big Grin]

Ol' Galvy won't be in this film. I've heard that, should this TF film do well, the Unicron story is being considered for a sequel. In that case, Unicron will likely change Megs into Galvy.

But what I really want to know is the voice talent for the TFs. If Peter Cullen and Frank Welker come back, I think I would literally die of happiness.

I'm in regular contact with many of the Vancouver voice actors who did the last few Transformers series. As I understand it, they were at one point being considered for the movie voices (especially Michael Dobson, who is for many people the best Starscream since Chris Latta), but that now it's been transferred solely to the Los Angeles pool. So it's possible to have not only Peter and Frank back, but some of the other still-living voice actors too.

Frank of course is up for any show that could afford his time (he turned down a Megatron cameo in Beast Wars, even when the producer of the show offered to drive over to his house for the handful of lines he was to speak - "Optimus Primal" actor Garry Chalk instead did it). I read once somewhere that Peter was steering clear of violent voice roles (he's almost ONLY been Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh for the last decade), though last year he was heard guesting on the abominable Megas XLR series...

But in terms of returning actors, they'd BETTER get Kasey Kasem in there too! [Wink]

If it was going to be anybody from the Ocean Group doing Starscream, I would rather it be Doug Parker (who voiced Starscream in Beast Wars' "Possession". That's not to say I didn't like Dobson's Starscream, but Parker's Latta impersonation is just so dead-on.

As for Casey Kasem, that depends greatly on whether or not he's willing to return to Transformers after the whole "Carbombya" incident...

Carbombya?

Anyway, I know Mike Dobson personally, so I naturally root for him. [Razz] But yes, Parker did a fantastic Screamer in "Posession", which makes sense as he was voicing the Starscream stand-in Terrorsaur in the first place. Dobson once said that his Starscream is a little of his voice, a little of Chris Latta, and a lot of jet engine.

Aside: I recently found "GI Joe: Venom Vs. Valor" in the bargain bin, and while the show made little sense and Cobra Commander was reduced to being the blundering comic relief of his OWN ruthless terrorist organization (determined to rule the world), I found Dobson's CC to get me laughing regardless, every scene. [Smile]

And in slightly less unrelated news...

And better still... Ye gods, has it been twenty years already?

Kasey Kasem is of Middle Eastern descent. He quit doing voice work for "Transformers" when they decided to do an episode set in a fictional Middle-Eastern-type country that they named "Carbombya".

Also, if Soundwave doesn't change size, he's either going to be a ten-foot-tall stereo, or about as threatening as an Aibo.

Yikes, that's pretty harsh, even for the pre-paranoid-PC cartoons of the 80s. You know, when everyone had realistic-looking guns, you SAW kids get punched, side boobs were a reality, you could say "WHAT THE?!", and it WASN'T just anime?

I mean partial nudity in 1980s cartoons, of course. Remember the episode of Jem where everyone stripped off while changing for a concert? Man, that was outrageous. Truly, truly, outrageous.

This was featured in an episode of The Peter Griffin Side Boob Hour before the show (and channel) was yanked. So much great programming, cancelled before its time...
