Jim Varney, the actor who was famous for playing Ernest P. Worrell, passed away today.

*was about to post a thread with the exact same title when Netscape crashed on "Submit"*

How about an impromptu poll... fave Ernest movie...

*checks IMDB*

('87)Ernest Goes to Camp
('88)Ernest Saves Christmas
('90)Ernest Goes to Jail
('91)Ernest Scared Stupid
('93)Ernest Rides Again
('94)Ernest Goes to School
('95)Slam Dunk Ernest
('97)Ernest Goes to Africa
('98)Ernest in the Army

*Anticipate that there'll be no votes for anything post-93*

For me? "...Camp" is classic (The turtles!) and "Scared Stupid" is just hilarious. Hardly intelligent humor, but humor nonetheless.

Incredibly, I know who this guy is!

I rather liked "Ernest goes to camp". (Don't look at me like that)
That film had a lasting effect: I still often open lids on toilets, peer within at the grisly contents and go "Eww-www-wwww!"

I only ever saw "Saves Christmas."

But I used to watch his TV show occasionally.

"Ernest Saves Christmas" hands down. If it hadn't been for Jim Varney's over-the-top performance, it would have been an awful movie. And the overly-developed "runaway teenager". She was good, too. Visually stimulating, that is. I don't suppose she's ever been in any other "family entertainment" since?

Ernest Scared Stupid had to be the best.

I can't say I'm particularly fond of his work, but he was a semi-important figure in Hollywood...

He will be missed

Rides Again was the only decent one not made by Disney. I'd say Scared Stupid was the best, but Camp was great, too. It effectively recycled all his classic commercial gags (e-ewwwwww, fingers caught in window, falling off ladder, etc.).

Great actor. He'll be missed.

*salutes*

May he rest in peace. My favorites were Ernest goes to Camp, and Ernest Scared Stupid, although Ernest Rides Again was good. I've never really liked Ernest Saves Christmas, but thats just me.

Well, I know I've seen Goes to Camp, but I don't remember most of it. I remember Goes to Jail. I also think I've seen another one... What's the one where he gets stuck in the cannon, and there's a huge spider in it?

This is a real loss to the world of comedy. "Know what I mean, Verne?"

That's "Rides Again".

And I believe it's spelled "knowhutimean".

Jim Varney did some comercials for the West Virginia lottery years ago. They were great, and yes he played Ernest.

My favorite movie for Jim was "The Beverly Hillbilllies," in which he played Jed Clampett. I think he was the only one in the movie that was as good or better then the peole from the TV series. For any who haven't seen it, Buddy Ebson played Jed on TV, and played Barnaby Jones in the "Hillbillies" movie.
