On Monday, September 9th of the year 2002 at 3:00 pm (1500) I will be picked up to go to Basic Training (Boot Camp) for nine weeks at the Great Lakes.

Now I am not saying I will never come back, but it will be months before I will post here again. I will finish my work before I leave *wink, wink* U-a P-a hree ta.

Can't say I didn't have fun here, but "It... was... fun."

NNNNOOOOO!!!!!! I've went through that, I can tell you it's not worth it. It sucks!

Having said that, keep this in mind ... "Do what you're told, when you're told, and how you're told." Never question an order. NEVER say "yeah" or "ok" in response to an order. Never ask for and want anything, you must "respectively request" it.

I could go on and on but I won't. You'll find out on your own. But if I could do it all over again, I don't think I would have joined the Navy.

I'm sure you may have tried learning your 11 General Orders. That is a definate must to memorize, trust me I speak from experience. Also learn your chain of command asap.

President: Mr. Bush
Vice-President: Mr. Cheny
Secretary of Defense: Mr. Rumsfield
Secretary of the Navy: Mr. England
Chief of Naval Operations: Admiral Clark
and so on ...

And finally Anchor's Aweigh...
quote:
[Verse 1]
Stand, Navy, out to sea, Fight our battle cry;
We'll never change our course, So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll out the TNT, Anchors Aweigh. Sail on to victory
And sink their bones to Davy Jones, hooray!

[Verse 2]
Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to foreign shores, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay.
Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more. Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.

[Verse 3]
Blue of the Seven Seas; Gold of God's great sun
Let these our colors be Till all of time be done-n-n-ne,
By Severn shore we learn Navy's stern call:
Faith, courage, service true With honor over, honor over all.

You'll only need to know the first 2 verses though.

One piece of advise. You're gonna catch hell from the higher-ups - never take it personally. It's not done to destroy you, but to toughen you up.

Good luck... you're gonna need it. [Razz]

Gosh yes, the most important thing one could learn in basic training is the name of the President of the United States. Wouldn't want to screw that up, and take orders from Prime Minister Thaksin Chinnawat of Thailand. The embarassment!

People have told me which worked for my cousin who was one of the most rebelious kids that would ever see, to be a drone, absorb everything they say. After boot camp and several months of duty as a Marine, he came back as a totally new man. So I will try to be as much a drone as I can be. I heard alot of stories, like never put trash in the trash can, never ever for the love of your mother look at them straight in the eye, and of course never take anything personally as someone mentioned.

Posted by Thoughtcancer (Member # 480) on :

my only advice is to enjoy the adrenaline rush that you're sure to get that first day. Most people never even get yelled at like that in their entire lives, much less some of the other stuff you'll be doing. Have fun with it, and be cool. You'll do fine.

could be worse for you.....

You could do PT for a couple hours before chow, then jump right in to classes, then have more chow, then run to your next classes, then have more chow, then get all you shit together for the next morning....

Oh, wait, you will be doing this.... Plus the cleaning of the barracks, or bay, depending on building type....

LOL..... YOU FOOL!!!!!!!!!

No, really, good luck, just remember that the first few weeks are the worst, as they try to cut you out with their mind-games.....
I went 5 weeks in to the first 8 with my DS not knowing I was even in his platoon, he called me a liar the first time he asked me which platoon I was in. Of course, after he realized he had ignored me for 5 weeks the next few were pretty shitty....

Ah, the Mortar Man, only bad thing is you can't see the look on the bad guys face when it dawns on them that they're about to be turned into a spot of grease on the ground. Don't take me for a psycho, I just love blowing stuff up. [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Those 'drones' they're called Marines. You'll hear all about "military bearing" but it's meaningless because once you're out of boot it all goes away. Believe me, no one in the Navy are mindless drones. We're all pretty much the same people we were before we joined.

Yeah, that first night was killer. You don't know what the hell to expect. It's probably without a doubt the worst time in boot camp I recall.

The deal with the trash cans ... there's several of them in the compartment and you NEVER put trash in them. There's another trash can in the head which you use. There's also tables down the center which you also never use.

There's also a lot of cleaning of the compartment as well. If not for the fact they have nothing better for us to do. The sad thing is we clean with socks. We don't get actual cleaning equipment. Not that I and most people in Division 192 actually cleaned. We just hid in the back by the pea coats and under racks while those losers from 191 cleaned for us. [Big Grin]

Also expect to get really sick in your first few weeks. It happens to every division. You'll be coughing like crazy every night.

Yes, Matrix, make sure to be "all out of bubblegum" a lot!

Also, don't get mad if you get slapped with soapsticks during the night, it builds character.

Good luck!! Do you have to eat worms in US basic training? (I do have a reason for asking this. I may share it with you.)

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :

You won't have to worry about that. You won't have bars of soap, it will be liquid bottled soap. Just get use to having like 1-2 minutes to take a shower with 20 other guys in cramp 8 shower head room.

No, in Navy boot camp there is no eating of worms.

Posted by Wraith (Member # 779) on :

^Well, if there's no worm eating it's not a proper training course, you know.

Posted by Obese Penguin (Member # 271) on :

Yep, we all know how many worms there are on the decks of a naval vessel.

Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :

Metal eating worms.

Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :

Yes, they are an off-shoot of the bookworm, for getting to those tasty, but crunchy, gilt edges...

Hmmmm... I guess the next time I come back, I will be inactive member? Not that it matters or anything.

Physically I am ready, from what I heard all you do is march and run alot. That's fine for me, in the past two months, I have brought my stamina up to the point I can run up to 1.5 miles before I collapse and die.

You can run 1.5 miles? I can run 1.5 miles. Impressed is not me.

Unless you mean you can sprint 1.5 miles, which would be a bit more noteworthy.

::sighs:: Well I tried to warn him... right now I know exactly what hell he's going through. I'm betting he's wishing he hadn't done it. Oh well, another one bites the dust.

We're just required 1.5 miles, for my age (20) to do it in 13:15 minutes.

On, of course, I completely forgot to include the point of that: no matter who the commander-in-chief is and what personal/political flaws that person might have, our servicemen and women have and will follow the orders.

And, by the way, good luck at boot camp!

The way we do it at NCC (Naval Center for Cryptology) is every month we have a Physical Fitness Assemen which involves sit ups, push ups and the 1.5 mile run. Plus there's the 6 month PRT. The point of the monthly PFA is to ensure you are keeping in shape so you'll pass the PRT. If you fail the PFA you get put on mando-PT until next month's PFA. This is just a division N34 thing, since it's up to us to PT on our own as opposed to scheduled PT times.

If we do bring in the stupid doctors, then we obviously need to mention Abraham "I wonder why I hate the theatre" Lincoln. If it weren't for all the probing of Lincoln's grey matter immediately following Booth's attack, he might have lived (according to a documentary I watched some time ago on A&E). He still would have had to give up the presidency since it was theorized that he would have been severely retarded had he lived.

I, too, am saying goodbye to Flare for an indeterminate period of time. For there is a high likelihood that I will be incarcerated by year's end.

For those not in the know, I have been in a relationship with a girl 11 years my junior; she only recently turned 16 about a week & a half ago. Her parents found out, & they went to the police. On Friday, I went home from work on my lunch break. I found my roommate there with an odd look on his face & a search warrant taped to my wall. A warrant, a probable cause affidavit, & a receipt of inventory. I talked to Helen, the property managaer, who gave me a copy of the local detective's card. I promptly came back to work & talked with my manager, who was more than understanding. I then took time to call a lawyer, but none local could really help since the charges are in Maryland; the specific charges are solicitation of a child for sexual purposes via the computer & sexual offense in the third degree. (Note that this is all public record, so my saying it here makes not one whit of difference.)

Finally, I was referred to one in Maryland. We talked about possibly retaining him for the initial stages, because as far as we know, there's been no arrest warrant issued. It'll be expensive, but it'd be more so to leave my fate in the hands of a Baltimore County PD.

My father berated me. My stepmother was more toned down. But they've both shown a willingness to help which is making me cry. I can't help it. So far, everyone--EVERYONE--has been saying, "This is bullshit, let me testify," which also makes me feel insanely good at a point when I really need it. But yeah..I didn't sleep very well that night; perhaps being raised on "Law & Order" isn't such a good thing.

With the computer gone, I find myself going even more stir crazy. Nothing to do, nothing but time, & the unstoppable thoughts of what's to come in my head. I'm scared. I'm sad. I'm angry. I'm..all over the place. My life--& hers--will never be the same again. This shouldn't have happened...for a lot of reasons.

But I digress. I won't be online for an indefinite while because they took my computer with them. I can check mail at the library, or webmail at friends' houses....but I won't be around at all, really.

But anyway...yeah. That's the situation. I'm hoping all goes well..but I don't think it will.

"solicitation of a child for sexual purposes via the computer & sexual offense in the third degree"

Solicitation? Child? Sexual purposes? Sexual offense? Third degree?

WTF?!

I'm fairly certain age of consent in Maryland is 18. I've heard 16, but I haven't heard it from an LEO or lawyer, so I don't trust it.

Posted by Capped In Mic (Member # 709) on :

but the 15/16 line would remove the 'child' charges from it (i thought), and 16 adds a lot of consent when it comes to the computer contacts i believe. not sure in that locality, just the way i believe it is around here.

"he got screwed by a handful of months"

A mere 180 or so, so slightly more than a handful, but still far too small to make it appropriate in any sense at all.

From Maryland's state statutes:

"A person is guilty of a sexual offense in the third degree if the person engages in ... A sexual act with another person who is 14 or 15 years of age and the person performing the sexual act is at least 21 years of age; or ... Vaginal intercourse with another person who is 14 or 15 years of age and the person performing the act is at least 21 years of age. ... Any person violating the provisions of this section is guilty of a felony and upon conviction is subject to imprisonment for a period of not more than 10 years."

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

It is a shitty situation, but, well, it's not unexpected that this has happened. As Tim said, he fucked a 15 year old girl. Did he think he'd get a medal.

And while it may have been better if she were 16, I'm still not convinced of the overall health of a relationship where one part is pushing 30, and the other has yet to graduate from high school.

Hm. That one doesn't worry me as much as this one:

419A.
(a) In this section "minor" means an individual under 18 years of age.

(b) Every person who solicits, causes, induces, or knowingly permits a minor to engage as a subject in the production of any obscene matter or any visual representation or performance that depicts a minor engaged as a subject in sexual conduct or sadomasochistic abuse as defined in 416A of this article is subject to the penalty provided in subsection (f) of this section.

(c) Every person who photographs, films, or by means of computer depicts or describes a minor engaging in an obscene act or engaging in sexual conduct or sadomasochistic abuse as defined in 416A of this article is subject to the penalty provided in subsection (f) of this section.

(d) Every person who knowingly promotes, distributes, or possesses with intent to distribute any matter or other visual representation or performance that depicts a minor engaged as a subject in sexual conduct or sadomasochistic abuse, as defined in 416A of this article, is subject to the penalty provided in subsection (f) of this section.

(e) Every person who, by means of computer, knowingly compiles, enters, transmits, makes, prints, publishes, reproduces, causes, allows, buys, sells, receives, exchanges, or disseminates any notice, statement, advertisement, or minor's name, telephone number, place of residence, physical characteristics, or other descriptive or identifying information for the purpose of engaging, facilitating, encouraging, offering, or soliciting unlawful sexual conduct or sadomasochistic abuse as defined in 416A of this article of or with any minor is subject to the penalty provided in subsection (f) of this section.

(f) (1) Every person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a felony and upon conviction shall be fined not more than $25,000 or imprisoned for 10 years, or both in the discretion of the court.

(2) A person who is convicted of a subsequent violation of this section is subject to a fine not exceeding $50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 20 years, or both in the discretion of the court.

(g) (1) In any action brought under this section, where the minor's identity is unknown or where the minor is outside the jurisdiction, the State's Attorney is not required to identify or produce testimony from the minor who is depicted in the obscene matter or in any visual representation or performance that depicts the minor engaged as a subject in sexual conduct or sadomasochistic abuse as defined in 416A of this article.

(2) The court or jury may determine whether an individual who is depicted in any obscene matter, or any visual representation or performance as the subject in sexual conduct or sadomasochistic abuse as defined in 416A of this article, was a minor by observation of the matter depicting the individual, oral testimony by a witness to the production of the matter, expert medical testimony, or any other method authorized by an applicable provision of law or rule of evidence.

Well, I'm not quite sure about the exact details of that law in Germany, but my girlfriend was 16 when we first ... you know ... while I was 22 then. I don't suppose that it was illegal in any way. (I think 16 is the line where it becomes legal - whatever the age of the mate).
Oh and even then she was already mature enough to think for herself. I didn't urge her to anything of that kind.
