Well, the Trek BBS is down for god knows how long. I am bored. Amuse me peons!

Please go back to the TrekBBS and stay there. This "official" thread nonsense really makes me want to bludgeon you to death.

With a rusty spoon.

Snay should shut his hole and stop mixing metaphors, especially ones that recall the most brilliant moment in any Kevin Costner movie, ever, which isn't saying much. That said, I won't post a formal warning in our Moderator Appeal and Personnel Re-Processing and Fish-Price-Control board, nor shall I start pretentiously calling him Snay, nor shall I go now and start the fourth thread of the day about how Archer should be sexually abused by Yridians.

I think he should be sexually abused by T'Paul. Or whatever her name is.

Uh, Snay, perhaps you forgot about the whole no-images-from-other-servers rule? Knock it off before I start getting nasty letters again.

And, for the hell of it, the inside scoop on the TrekBBS problem.

Christian and I had been talking on and off over the past few weeks about finally getting the upgrade going after months of problematic delays. The other day, the resident trolling idiots flooded the registration queue with requests, which totally blew up the index files. A rebuilder script and a few backups took care of THAT problem, but it was clear that the old UBB couldn't take much more of the abuse. Frankly, I'm shocked it lasted as long as it did, especially with those little children trying to take it down.

(Sidenote: Registrations here and on the new Slipstream/TrekBBS scripts are floodchecked. Don't bother with it, you won't get anything done.)

On Saturday morning, I started preparing for the upgrade. To my horror, I found that the server had FAR less memory than I recalled it having, and had *NO* swap space (virtual memory on the filesystem)... In other words, the completely moronic host screwed things up AGAIN.

I spent most of the weekend fixing the server (manual repartitioning of a live server is NOT FUN AT ALL)...

SlipstreamBBS was converted first. Overall, things went well. The few malfunctions that were encountered have been fixed, and almost no data was lost in the import. Of course, the colors MAJORLY suck, but that's only because I couldn't figure out the CSS rules. I've done a second theme which is MUCH easier on the eyes... hopefully it will be OKayed and put up to replace the old one.

Right now, at this moment, the TrekBBS is in the middle of the import. There's a LOT of data to bring in, and I'm nowhere near done with the new moderation queue handler, not that Christian and Lisa can't do it manually like they are on Slipstream.

Performance on this thing is gonna suck majorly unless we can get some more memory in that box. The host really screwed Christian over without anyone realizing it. The host says that the earliest they'll install new memory is Thursday... which is right out unacceptable and rather stupid. If required, we'll open it without the new memory, but MAN that's not gonna be pretty.

Anyway, I've probably said too much.

Wow! Uh, thank you, sir! This is the first time I have ever had a board administrator post in one of my threads! Oh, and merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Out of curiosity, Charles, do you have any idea if the old archived threads at the Trek BBS will be reinstated? There are a number of old topics that I've been wishing I had a copy of, but were removed at one point or another.

And, another question out of curiosity -- is the UBB.classic system scheduled for a similar UI upgrade like OpenTopic recently got? (Not sure if I'm really that fond of it, but it's got its good points.)

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

Importing the archives was part of the original plan, but did not occur - there are too many CURRENT messages for MySQL to handle on that server.

I plan to come up with another soultion to the archive problem - probably another UBB installation.

The OT UI is heavily tied in with a number of changes coming to OT, as well as a number of things we have in the pipeline. There are no plans to port it to Threads or Classic, but both Rick and I do plan to steal elements of the UI. [Smile] Threads 6.2 can do the collapseable categories, for instance.

when is performance there supposed to stop sucking? ever since it came back up again, i havent been able to log on or view threads.. at best i get a 'server load' placeholder, at worst i get SQL errors flying left and right.

or is that just the christmas traffic?

I discovered a thread a little while ago -- Basically, Christian got shafted by the company maintaining his server, and has only have the amount of memory (RAM) that they're supposed to. The announcement I read said that the memory will be doubled (from 512 to 1024 MB) within a few days.

Overall, I'm very impressed... and Charles, congratulations for your efforts there! I'm not a regular visitor at the Trek BBS, but I know just how enormous that board has gotten... I'm sure it was a herculean task. [Smile]

Wouldn't that be this thread?

Charles, the new board looks great, even though some of us had to reset our passwords, and some of us (including me) lost posts during the move. ChristmageGalen suggested that threads in TNZ be created so that those of us who lost posts can regain them by spamming specifically in those threads. His thread is 230 postsstrong at this point. link [Big Grin]

Isn't spamming what everyone ALWAYS does on Trek_BBS anyway?

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

no, i think that last March, user Kahn Noonyan Sink accidentally posted three sentences of relevant opinion about the uniform design of Voyager between two paragraphs of insults to the administrators who gave him a verbal warning for calling CaptianJRiker a 'Bermanist.' After the relevant comment, however, he posted twelve lines of swear words and a link to TrollKingdom.

But yes, other than that isolated incident, there is no relevance to anything there.

I think that's the best sarcastic summary of the TrekBBS (except the Trek Tech forum) I've read lately.

Don't mind me... I'm not paying attention to anything since I don't have to apply myself over Christmas break... [Wink]

Why is it that everyone over there is so obsessed with post count?

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

Because over there they all get to have their kEWl Starfleet ranks and appear more important. Also, Christian set up those rank-specific "Officer's Lounges" that people are obsessed with getting into for some reason.

One of several reasons why I rarely go over there any more and almost never post.

TrekBBS sucks!

But the real question is, whether it swallows.

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

If hear another one of them complain that they lost a percentage of their post count, I'm gonna fucking reset ALL of them to zero. I fucking swear.

I'm sick and tired of it. Sick and tired.

Thank God it's not that bad here.

Then you'd have a real riot on your hands... 30K angry trolls, spammers, and Major Barcalows ganging up on you *shudder*

Don't forget the Storm Ruckers! Or does he count as a troll?
