I just got this game today and I was wondering if here has the game as well and would care to be trampled by my massive armies. [Smile]

Only if I can import my Starcraft armies. I'd like to see your 18th century troops try to stop dropships and tanks! [Big Grin]

Hey guys! Did you hear about the upcoming sequel for Duke Nukem 3D? It's supposed to be out in the fall!

Also, John Romero's leaving iD?

Whoa crazy!

(Because, old fashioned out of dateness.)

Civ2: Play The World? Sure you don't mean Civ3? I have regular Civ3 but don't have Play The World yet.

Civ II was TEH BESTEST!!

Of course, that was back in 1996, when Sid Meyer was still alive and kicking and Microprose was still A SOFTWEAR EPMIRE TOO BE RECONKED WIHT, but age MATTARS NOT!!

I've got vanilla Civ3, and would have bought PTW months ago if the idiots at the programming company would go ahead and greenlight a Mac version. Gaming is the one cloud in the sky of using a Mac... [Roll Eyes]

Posted by Mucus (Member # 24) on :

Hmmm, multiplayer Civilization.
How long would that take?
How long before someone complains about their pre-industrial society being wiped out by a tank rush? [Wink]

"Gaming is the one cloud in the sky of using a Mac..."

More like an 8/8 overcast. 8)

Also, who is this crazy Warren Spector? He has a speech degree? System what now?

I don't trust him to make any good games at all.

PREDICTION: FLASH IN THE PAN, I WILL SAY.

Deus Ex II.

Half Life II.

Doom III.

To trust or not to trust. It is an ever-gnawing angst.

Two of those things do not belong there. Two of those things just are not the same.

And now for something completely different:

Theif III though. I think. Is he doing that, or not?

And I still haven't finished Deus Ex I. I can't make up my mind if I want to be crazy joined computer mind, crazy ruling the world in a shadowy way guy, or crazy keep things the same dude. Why isn't there an option to fight the bad guy, who dies, but then gets his ULTIMATE FORM, and you fight him again, except he looks a bit like an angel or something, and then he dies again, and then Aeris doesn't die?

As long as there are adventures, there will be Air Pirates! Yes!

Yes, I'm resurrecting a dead topic. Krenim bad.

Anyway, I'm seriously considering buying Civ III with Play the World. Other than Jay, does anybody else have Play the World? I find the idea of playing on a planet where the other leaders are Flare forum-goers very interesting...

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

Krenim, you might want to wait a few days. They're just coming out with Civ III: Conquests, a new expansion pack which includes some awesome-looking scenarios (the titular "conquests" of the game), including The Fall of Rome, Ancient Central America, and World War II in the Pacific.

I'm not certain if C3:C has the multiplayer capability included, but I'm pretty sure that it does include all the other features -- the extra civilizations, the additional units, and so forth. You should probably double-check before you buy.

Here's a pretty good place to look, that I've visited on occasion: CivFanatics.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Well, what I meant was I plan to get Civilization III: Gold Edition, which is Civ III and Play the World together. I've played Civ I and II, and really enjoyed them both.

Posted by Jay the Obscure (Member # 19) on :

Mmmm, a Flare smite-fest. Sounds interesting.

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

How about a pyjamas party instead? A flare mite-fest!

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

I got Civ III Gold last night, and I must say I'm impressed. The concept of borders is probably the best new idea. I hated when rival civilizations would found new cities right next to mine in Civ II, so that fixes that. They also toned down my favorite Wonder: Leonardo's Workshop. That's a good thing, since I found that building Leo's Shop first pretty much assured me total victory.

The multiplayer options sound interesting. Alas, I doubt I have the time to play an entire game online, but I suppose that's what the e-mail game function is for.

So... Who wants a royal smiting? [Big Grin]

I'll be up for a game...after December 4th.

The GRE looms.

Resurrecting an old topic yet again...

I bought Civilization III: Conquests tonight. It includes Play The World and adds 15 new cultures (Arabs, Byzantines, Carthaginians, Celts, Hittities, Incans, Koreans, Mayans, Mongols, Netherlands, Ottomans, Portugal, Scandanavians, Spanish, and Sumeria), new world wonders, new weapons, and of course the 9 scenarios (Mesopotamia, Rise of Rome, Fall of Rome, Middle Ages, Mesoamerica, Age of Discovery, Sengoku, Napoleonic Europe, and World War II in the Pacific).

So, now that I have PTW, and hopefully more of you have it, who wants to start nuking each other? I'm probably crap but I'd at least like to try...

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Sounds good to me. Sometime in the next few days would be ideal, as I have the computer all to myself until a few days after New Year's.

Posted by Jay the Obscure (Member # 19) on :

So, who all has the game in question and would be available to have the smack down put on them by me? [Wink]

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

I think it might just be the three of us, considering how this thread's been dead twice thus far. Still, it would be nice to have more. After all, what's the fun in playing Civilization without enough civilizations to backstab?

Wait, did I say backstab? I meant ally with. Really.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

I just got DSL so I'm really itching to play an online game.

Do you guys have Conquests though? Or just original Civ with PTW?

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

I just have Civ III Gold Edition, which was Civ III with Play the World. If I understand correctly, this just means that anyone who plays an online game with me cannot use a Conquests civilization.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Maybe, but Conquests also adds new kinds of units and stuff for every civilization...

I'm just not sure if people who have Conquests can play against people who just have Civ3.

Kind of like you can't play Starcraft against Starcraft Brood Wars.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

http://www.civ3.com/conq_faq.cfm#faqs7

That settles that, I think.

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

The trouble with multiplayer Civ games is that, well, they go on for years and years and years, and that it's almost impossible to play one to its conclusion when everybody's in a different timezone. I'd be up for a good backstabbing if you guys had, say, twelve straight hours to kill, but reserving that much time is pretty ludicrous, and in practice one of us would have to bow out prematurely anyway.

Plus I only have vanilla Civ III. Sorry. B)

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

So basically the only way to play would be if someone with PTW set up the game, and then I joined in with Conquests...

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

That's how I took it.

Anyway, we're going to need to choose a time to do this. And we should probably choose the characteristics of the world we'll be playing on ahead of time, too. And claim civilizations.

Posted by Jay the Obscure (Member # 19) on :

I have PTW...and some time between now and the 13th of January...

At which time we leave for Italy for 2 weeks. Pardon me...WHOHOOOO!!

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

I have all the time in the world. I usually play as the Greeks, if that's already with you. And a pangean type world might seem best, so we can find each other easily and not have to wait until we can sail across the oceans. Just have us all fighting for one big chunk of land.

Shame you guys don't have Conquests, it adds a few new Victory Conditions that would make the game much shorter. One where if you lost 1 city, you lose the entire game, another where you have a free roaming king, where if he is killed, you lose the game, and a sort of capture the flag...

I'd be okay with Pangaea if Jay is. Any other preferences?

Actually, I think those are part of Play the World, as those victory conditions came with Gold Edition.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

I can't think of any other preferences.

What type of multiplayer game do you think would be best? I'm thinking the Capture the King one might make things quicker...

Also, does your version of PTW allow for simultaneous turns, instead of having to wait?

Regicide, hmm? That probably would make the game go quicker.

Yes, simultaneous turns come with PTW.

Like I said earlier, if we're going to do this, it's going to have to be in the next few days. Otherwise, I'm going to have to share this computer. What day/time would be best for you two?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Honestly any time is good. I've been needing to change my sleep schedule anyway, so it'd be a good way to alter it.

I'm usually up from noon - 5am EST.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Well, I'd love to do this tomorrow, as tomorrow is the last day I can guarantee having this computer to myself. But I don't know if either of you two have New Year's Day plans or not.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Me? Doing something on New Years? Never...

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Assuming that isn't sarcasm, what time tomorrow would be good?

Jay? Any objections to this?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Anything after noon EST would be fine.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Alright. Unless Jay objects, let's set the time for 1:00 EST tomorrow.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Well, the appointed time has come. I'm going to start up a game called "Flare". It'll be password protected so nobody else can get in. The password will be "braxton".

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

...and nobody showed up. [Frown]

I'm going to try again at 3:00 PM EST.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Sorry, no can do. My parents, as usual, neglect to tell me anything. I'm apparently going to my aunt's place in an hour.

My apologies.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Ugh. When will you be back?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

We'll we're staying for dinner and stuff, so my guess would be until 9 or 10 maybe.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

How about tomorrow at 1:00 PM EST, then?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

No can do there either, have to go to the bank and get a haircut.

Nerd!

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Curses! Foiled again! [Wink]

Is any time okay tomorrow?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

I don't know for certain, since I have to go with my dad to the bank, so it'd be on his schedule. Sometime in the afternoon might be possible though.

Posted by Jay the Obscure (Member # 19) on :

I was gone all day...sorry.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Today at 2:00 PM EST?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Taking down Xmas lights...

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Okay, here's the thing... This is my absolute last day with this computer to myself. I desperately want to play a game of Civ III online. So just give me a time today and I'll host a game then. Okay? OKAY?!?! [Wink]

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

For god's sake, someone play with him! If it wasn't Sunday, I'd go and buy the bloody thing myself.

I mean, just imagine it. You're 80. You're looking back on your life. When listing the great things you did in your 20s (or whatever), what's going to by higher? "I had an amazing game of Civ III which had highs, lows, tension, excitement, and made me glad to be alive"? Or "I was taking down the Christmas lights"?

Eh? EH? THINK!

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

Did you know I once had a brush with death when I took down some faulty christmas lights that I'd forgotten to unplug first? It had highs (me nearly frying myself), lows (me not nearly frying myself), tension (a zappy 220 volts of it), excitement (my hair was all raised and stuff), and it made me REAL glad to be alive. So there.
