My ICQ list has offed itself again. If anyone wants to talk to me using that particular service, contact me at 1092BLAH8359, without the blah. Or you could just use AIM, which would be much simpler. [Smile]

Both suck. Use a REAL IM service, like MSN.

That sounds wrong.

You could also use the politically correct Jabber [Wink]

Comparing AIM, ICQ and MSN is a little like comparing the three most appealing types of, uh, something not very appealing, like flesh-eating disease. You're going to suffer pain no matter what client you use.

Stick to IRC if you know what's good for you. B)

MSN is quite frankly one of the BEST IM clients out there, with an extensive amount of features, great UI, excellent usability, etc. Though you have to worry at least a bit about spyware thanks to the way it works. [Frown]

An extensive amount of features? Not really.

Or you could stop living in 1996. Seriously, IRC? Who on earth uses that?

The only reason I prefer ICQ to MSM is because I like the whole "type your message then the window dissapears" way it works. It makes it easier to chat while doing other things.

I prefer just using GAIM or Miranda to keep all the protocols together. Of course, I have to open that protocol's specific client if I want to do something as simple as send or receive a file depending on what protocol it is. I can't stand AOL's AIM client in Windows simply because of the blinking in the taskbar. Truly annoying stuff.

"Who on earth uses that?"

Well, I on earth. Most of my friends on earth. Millions of other people on earth. And when humanity finally colonizes Mars, hundreds of thousands of people not on earth. IRC will not go quietly into the night. It will live on long after the crappy IM services have faded into a DIM MEMORY. IRC... is.

"It makes it easier to chat while doing other things."

Like reading reviews of a certain shitty SUPARHERO cartoon series? That is just the stupidest reason EVAR, dude.

"Of course, I have to open that protocol's specific client if I want to do something as simple as send or receive a file depending on what protocol it is."

One word: Trillian.

Another word: No. [Razz]

I've tried Trillian before, but just didn't enjoy using it. Miranda has really grown on me, despite its lack of certain protocol-related features. Perhaps it's the simplistic design of Miranda and the ability to customize the display and operation that catches my eye. Trillian, on the other hand, looks horrid out of the virtual box. Sure, I can download skins to fit my overly-minimalistic needs, but I still can't stand Trillian.

Your friends are nerds. I bet they all post on usenet, too. And fondly recall the days before the World Wide Web made the internet all popular and mainstream.

You post on a Star Trek forum, dear.
Now is not the time to be calling people nerds.

Star Trek is great!

What else is great?

People who use MSN and ICQ?

"MAYBE!"

Don't underestimate the eagerness of e-mail harvesters!

I am recalling those days at this very moment.

Also, people who don't like Trillian or its interface should be whacked on the head with a 40-pound GUI design manual. Repeatedly. It's just beyond me how anyone can think Bad Things about this pure gem of a program:

01) It's not bloated like ICQ
02) It's not kiddy like MSN
03) It's not shite like AIM
04) It's sleek!
05) It's bannerless!
06) It's minimalist!
07) It's customizable!
08) It's spyware-free!
09) It's not made by Mirabilis
10) It's not made by Microsoft
11) It's not made by America-Online
12) It's not resource-intensive!
13) It's not insistent on burrowing itself seven billion registry entries to function!

If, after reading all these points, you still think Trillian is horrid, then you deserve no less than to have your brain sucked out through your nose. Slowly. Grr.

I meant that by default, Trillian looks like a hairy piece of tribble crap. There are minimalistic skins out there, but they're not minimalistic enough for me! I don't particularly want to have to skin a program just for it to not look like crap.

What? The interface? You have heard of the screen resize feature in Windows, haven't you?
