What's a good pop-up/ad-ware killer?

Posted by deadcujo (Member # 13) on :

Mozilla Firefox + Ad-Aware

I use Spybot and McCaffee- they work well.
Have not tried Firefox or AdAware though.

Definitely Mozilla/Firefox for pop-uplessness.

I'd combine Ad-Aware and Spybot, though. They each find things the other doesn't.

Like each other's backups of deleted files.

Nobody finds Elite Bar, though, and eventually I slit my wrists.

Are we suddenly in your autobiography now?

"Suddenly in your autobiography now" would make a good forum description.

AdAware, Spybot, PestPatrol, and SpySweeper. And if you can't protect your system from ad- & mal- & spyware with those four programs combined, then you should never be allowed near a PC again in your life ever.

Or, just don't go to those Powerpuff Girls porn sites.

Aside from Firefox, I use...

McAfee Anti-Virus
ZoneAlarm
Ad-Aware 6
Spybot: Search and Destroy

The Google taskbar also has a pop-up blocker built in. As does IE as of service pack two (Bill sure can smell a bandwagon, can't he?)

I don't get how people end up with ad- and spyware, anyway. I've got both Ad-Aware and Spybot, I run them rarely, and they never find anything.

Now, the public-use Internet stations at work... That's a whole different story. You wouldn't believe how easily people can fuck those things up. Seriously, I can run AA and SB on one of them, clean out stuff from the Add/Remove Programs list, and run through the hard drive and registry manually to get rid of all the crap they put on there, and the thing will still be all but nonfunctional within a few hours.

Kazaa and Morpheus are loaded with spyware although I doubt they call it that when they tell you what's being installed on your computer. Porn sites are another major spy/ad ware source, not to mention trojans and other nasty shit you don't want. I'm not a big internet user, don't usually have the time, so I'm not sure what other sources there are. I've heard lack of security functions in IE is another problem. Apparently it's got holes in it that allow someone with the ability to really fuck your system.

It doesn't have to be a piece of software or a porn site. I was once "infected" with spyware/adware just by visiting the IMDB. It seemed that one of the ads they used was of the aggressive type. Once IE loaded the ad, it forcefully began uploading the damn spyware/adware to my computer.

If you use IE, you have no right to complain.

I never said spyware comes from just porn sites, but they are a pretty big source of it. I also said the lack of security in IE doesn't help. Since a lot of spyware can be put in Flash popup ads or something. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but IE blindly downloads the source code which includes the spyware script.
