A friend of mine read it a long while ago, but he's trying to find it. I also remember it but I can't remember the title or author. Here is his description:

If I remember correctly, a brother and a sister created a sort of cyber-space reality game, taking place in medieval times, where you had to fight monsters and whatnot to get to a castle. It turns out that if you die at one point in the game, an error occured and the player was set into a life-long coma. Their job was to figure out why it was doing it. Another big thing I remembered about the book was that pollution got so bad, it was a constant acid rain outside, and to travel around, people had to wear masks to protect themselves.

Anyone know it?

If that author wants to strike it rich he should start a religion instead.

Have you or your friend seen the movie "Avalon", by Mamoru Oshii? If not, see the movie "Avalon", for theme-comparing. That should wet your beaks enough to forget about this book.
It has a basset hound in it, which is my favorite form of hound.

The first part reminds me of the Otherland saga by Tad Williams. . .

A Google search turns up Gemini Game by Michael Scott, which sounds pretty close.

Is the book's title "The big book of late 90's sci-fi cliche's"?

Can we also play name that film? From the 80's I think. Mans family goes away for the weekend, he is home alone at his brownstone and tries to get rid of an uninvited guest in the form of a rat.
This is not a comedy or cartoonish thing. The rat is smart and the man nearly destroys his house. He takes an axe to the walls, etc. I've googled rat movies and can't find it.

Sounds kind of stupid. If you had said and uninvited guest in the form of a rotting corpse, or an ancient evil spirit that feeds on the flesh of goldfish... then you'd have a premise.
