Pizza delivery ends Australian prison siege

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian prison siege ended on Monday after a group of inmates agreed to release a guard they had held for two days in return for a delivery of pizzas, prison officials said.

A group of up to 20 inmates seized control of the reception area of the maximum security Risdon Prison in Hobart, capital of the southern island state of Tasmania, on Saturday, demanding better treatment and improvements to the jail.

The siege was resolved in far less dramatic circumstances.

"Our staff member was negotiated out with the delivery of 15 pizzas," Graeme Barber, Tasmania's director of prisons, told reporters.

The prisoners had earlier made a list of 24 demands. But none was so pressing as the need for a take-out meal and the guard was released unharmed not long after midnight.

About 20 prisoners, some being held as hostages, were involved in the siege. The last of the hostages was released by their pizza-filled captors early on Monday.

Risdon Prison holds Martin Bryant, who was convicted of Australia's worst massacre of modern times when he shot dead 35 people in 1996 in the Tasmanian tourist town and former penal colony of Port Arthur.

Those must have been criminally good pizzas.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

The riot erupted again, though, when the inmates found sausage on their pizza. Inmates hate being slipped the sausage.

The pizzas sent in were from Papa Johns: a UN human rights tribunal will convieve next week to investigate....

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Papa Johns around here is quite good. Certainly, as a take away, it's up there with Domino's.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Really not high praise.
That's like saying "As far as greasy burgers go, Checkers is right up there with McDondalds."

You'll almost always get better pizza from a local mom-n-pop run place than a chain.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

All the one's like that around here are primarily indian take-aways, with pizza as an extra. And they're not very good at all.

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

If your pizza isn't there in 30 minutes or less, you can shoot a hostage.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Papa John's > Domino's.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

I don't think I've had either, truth be told. I'm a big fan of Greco's, though. Although I'd have to say Pizza Shack makes a mean pizza.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

So can you get pizza delivered in London, now? I've only got that bit in one of the Dirk Gently books to go on as proof that you can't, or couldn't, but still.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

I made that same point once. Someone thought I was crazy. Then I explained the source of my information, and I was ridiculed for relying upon a (now) seventeen-year-old work of fiction for my data. I was sad.

And... "Pizza Shack"? How is that not a parody?

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

Pizza Shack is a restaurant chain in NB. Not sure if they have any restaurants outside of NB as they don't appear to have a website...

I say you made it up!

He's a witch! Throw him into the pizza-oven!

Okay, that would force me to go to a chain pizzaria.

Strage that the US should have such a greatyer percentage of italians to make good pizza than london (what with your closer proximity to Italy and all).

I may order a pizza now- peperoni, mushrooms, extra cheese and green olives sound good....

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

There is a fair chance that Papa John's over here tastes better/different than it does in the US. It's just a name, after all. (I remember when I went into a McDonald's in the US. Granted, you don't expect the highest quality food from MaccyD's, but it was almost unedible. So I now base my experience of all American McDonalds on that one singular restaurant).

I also go for Papa John's because they have an "any pizza, any size" offer if you collect it. And they are less than two minutes walk from my house.

I think that was me that ridiculed Tim for believing the non-pizza delivery thing.

Why do people think that I suddenly live in London?

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

It is more that the reference is to London. There could very well be great delivery in Whoopsidoodle-on-the-Wye, but it is outside the context of the anecdote.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

You started off with "So you can get pizza delivered in London now?" in reference to me talking about pizza delivery places. So the anecdote is irrelevent (unless the passage in the book implied that you couldn't get pizza delivered anywhere in the UK, it's been a while and I can't quite remember.)

In any event, I know that Britain is a small place and full of places-not-famous-to-American-eises-and-earyes, but Liverpool is really not that obscure.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Well, you used to live in London, didn't you? And I mean "London" in the broadest accepted sense. Middlesex, as it (formerly) were.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

The mind just naturally avoids thinking of the word "Liverpool".

It's visually unsetteling.

"Were"? Are you sure?

And I haven't lived in London for 5 years. Half a decade. The time delay between here and there isn't that slow. And in any event, Liverpool is not in London or Middlesex. (Was it Jason who thought that it was right outside of London? Not that I want to mock him, because I couldn't point out 99% of US cities on a map. I'm just wondering why he thought that.)

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

I'm confused. In the book the reference is, at least by my dim recollection, explicitly in regards to London, and this was the sole reason I mentioned it.

You may suggest that that makes my comment somewhat divorced from the rest of the thread, but when hasn't that been true?

Thread flow:

Implication is that Liam can get pizza delivered to his house.

Simon is surprised that you can now get pizza delivered in London. This seems to be a direct response to the above comment, since the only other people in the thread talking about getting pizzas delivered live in the US, where Simon is well aware that pizza can be delivered.

Liam can get pizza delivered. Simon takes that to mean you can now get pizzas delivered in London. Simon is therefore assuming that Liam lives in London. Liam has not lived in London for 5 years. Simon is a very silly billy.

I don't know if you can get pizzas delivered in Wales, though.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Hang on, I'll ask. . . Yes, they can, apparently.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Wales is silly, so I wasn't sure.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Ugh - and you have to ask, otherwise you get sliced leeks on everything.

We've got a great carry-out place (I'm assuming the equivilant of a "take-away") just down the street from me here in Buchanan. I have to excersize enormous amounts of self control not to order pizza every night on my way home from work.

As for not being able to get pizzas delivered in certain places, there were areas of Columbus that were in the dead-zone of food delivery. If you lived on the wrong side of some random street or in the wrong neighborhood, noone would deliver to you.

And why does this thread have me wanting to add a "u" to all my wourds...?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I'm not sure, since I can't see any words on this page that are spelt with an "ou" in English and an "o" in American. I'd focus on learning how to spell "exercise", as your way is actually making even Jason cry.

I don't think that the US equivilent of "take-away" is "carry-out". I thought it was the rather more obvious "take-out".

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

"equivalent"

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Crap, I really botched that one didn't I?

I've heard both carry-out and take-out. I say carry-out. But then again, I also apparently spell abysmally. It's a place where you get the food to go rather than sit there and eat it, yes?

Posted by Mighty Blogger Snay (Member # 411) on :

It probably varies according to where in the US you are, but in the Baltimore area, "carry out" is correct.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

YES!!! Baltimore agrees with me.

There's this great little pizza place I used to go to when I lived near downtown. The most awesome pizza I ever had there was a grilled chicken and rosemary pizza with olive oil on a pan-style wheat crust. I would forgo ever having sex forever if I could have that pizza every day.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

. . . No, I'm not that cruel.

I remain unconvinced about chicken on pizza, even after my stint in NZ where they put all kinds of weird shit on (guacamole? Camambert?!).

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I'll bite... what in the world is Camambert?

A place called Sailor's here makes a Chicken ranch pizza that's actually really good. I thought I'd hate it, but it rocks.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

It looks like it's a cheese, Aban. I've never had nor heard of it before. It looks kinda... gooey.

I am all for chicken on pizza.

You should have more faith in yourself lad. Everyone loves a good pizza.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

Especially if it's a grilled chicken and rosemary deep-dish pizza with a silky wheat crust. Or a tomato, bacon, basil, and bleu cheese crumble pizza on a thin-dish oregano crust.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

Blue/bleu cheese frightens me.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Also, Earl Camembert was one of Eugene Levy's characters on "SCTV". Not that that matters.

Liam: I said "were" because the phrase is "as it were". It sounds odd because I threw "formerly" in there. Because, nobody calls it "Middlesex" anymore.

No...that was not me.
That's not to say i now where Liverpool is anyway.

Your country is smaller than some of our states- it leads to us thinking that everything over there is walking distance. [Wink]

Here in Fort Lauderdale, we have a great place called Downtown Pizza that delivers till 4am.
They'll bring you chicken wings and beer as well (well, not beer after 2am- that's the local cut off).

"That's not to say i now where Liverpool is anyway."

Know where Wales is? Same side of England, a bit closer to Scotland.

I go to Penny Lane Wine Bar regularly, like. Although it's really just a pub. But still, I am the fifth Rolling Stone, or something.

I am not keen on anything non meat on my Pizzas. Apart from cheese, obviously. I used to love the Sicilians they did at Pizza Hut. Better than the Edge, or whatever madness they have now. PIZZAS WITH NO CRUST WHAT WORLD IS THIS??!?!??!

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

As bad as their "all crust" pizzas stuffed with cheese and god knows what else.

I like meat on pizza, but not stuff like a "meat lovers" pizza- too greasy.

There's a gay joke in there somewhere.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Yes, Camembert. And it looks especially horrible on top of a pizza. And any blue cheese on pizza is also insanity.

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

There are only three things that belong on a pizza: cheese, tomatos, and maize. And basil. Eat one with any other ingredients in my presence, and I will be forced to rip out your tongue.

We once got a pizza with sausage on it until my (then) 2 year old son informed us that he couldn't eat it because someone put poo-poo on it.

That was about 3 years ago. We haven't ordered sausage since.

My problem with meat-lovers pizza isn't so much the grease as it is the salt. I prefer the frozen variety to delivery anyway. Red Baron, Special Deluxe, with extra olives, turkey peppironi, mozarella and mild cheddar. Cook until just this side of burnt. Beautiful.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

DiGiorno's (or however the hell you spell it) also makes a dem fine frozen pizaa. I think there are a couple of the Wolfgang Puck ones that are pretty good too.

Looks just like rat turds.

Maize? As in, corn? You eat corn pizza?

What disturbs me more is the lack of meat. What is a pizza without meat but a large, glorified bruschetta?
