Cause really, who hasn't played around with Google Maps. There's this nifty page that uses Google Maps software to allow groups to add pins to the map showing where they are. US residents get to put in their ZIP code whereas those of us in the rest of the world have to hope our city is in the list. I made a map for Flare here. Lets see where everyone is from!

If you think Google Maps are cool, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Check out Google Earth, possibly the coolest thing I have yet come across on the Internet. It is truly a great age of information when I can download a (damned near) complete photographic representation of MY ENTIRE PLANET down to the city block FOR FREE.

(You have to use Windows XP, though.)

Over at Subspace Comms Network one of the members set up a similar map. Better though because you can pick exactly where you are located.

Which ironically seems to be down at the moment...

1. Omega at approximately 879 miles
2. B.J. at approximately 905 miles
3. Cartman at approximately 1,081 miles
4. Hobbes at approximately 1,145 miles

Sniff. I'm so alone.

Ack... I've added a photo and accidently made two "shoutouts" thinking it would overwrite the first one.

The pinpoint is off by about 3-5 miles... if you switch to satview you'll see a small white cloud down to the right that covers the Naval Weapons Station which is where I'm at.

Those are some crazy suburban street patterns in your area, Siegfried.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

Yeah, and they're all named the same sterile, generic neighborhood names. Most of the subdivisions around my marker are less than five years old. My subdivision (which is about four or five miles southeast of the marker) was the edge of civilization when we moved out here twenty years ago. Now we're considered the nearby suburbs (god bless urban sprawl, apparently). I hate driving in those new subdivisions; I always get lost in them.

If you click "Hybrid" and start scrolling west or south, you'll see this suburban explosion in action. The satellite pictures are about two years old while the street map is pretty current. You'll see a few old farm and ranch pastures that have subdivision maps plopped on top of them. That's what's been built in the past couple years. It's a shame; every year I have to drive further and further out to go cow-tipping.

I threw in a photo- just because I had some crazy zodiac thing in there before -and so you can watch the news for my lifeless corpse if this fucking hurricane hits Fort Lauderdale.

On the plus side, lots of wealthy yacht owners are in town to show off their superyachts at the Interntional Boat Show, so there could be some amusing destruction amid, you know, all the death.

Did you know that the Port of Fort Lauderdale harbors many oil tankers, our main electrical and sewer facilities and dozens of gaint oil holding tanks?

We take that whole "putting all your eggs in one basket" thing to an extreme.

Jason, you really might want to consider using a different picture. Posting your Florida driver's license number, date of birth, and address for everyone to see isn't a good idea. I can see you played with the license, but, you know, in case you didn't alter the information on it.

I hope you escape the wrath of Wilma. The good news is that she's continuing to weaken from the monster she was earlier yesterday. I've been watching the models, and they seem to be sliding down the Florida coast. Unfortunately, almost all of Florida is in the cone of probability on the five-day track from the NHC. If it stays on that track (I know, but be optimistic), then Ft. Lauderdale could be in the same position as Houston was with Rita (you'll be on the better side of the storm).

No matter what, though, I'll hope for the best for you. Good luck.

What do you mean? There's plenty of high-resolution photography of other regions on there. Why just the other day I was checking out The Netherlands and I could see the Oosterscheldekering and there were even detailed photos of The Hague among other areas. Certainly better pictures than most cities in NB.

On Google Earth I can put the point of the arrow right on the spot I am currently sitting!

Brisbane is highly... imaged. Funly enough the centre of Sydney is not. The region near the Opera House/Harbour Bridge/Circular Quay is very low quality.

I seem to be sharing a large wooden horse with an equally wooden but reasonably well-proportioned Lady Godiva in the small park across from the local concert hall.

In real life, I rather prefer the elk a few meters farther south. But that's enough of that.

Seems Frapper! uses the same photos for Finland that GoogleEarth does. Only about six months out of date, which is highly impressive. For some reason, their material on US military bases is far poorer than GE's, though. Have you checked out for example GE's Pearl Harbor, or Norfolk?

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

Sol System: Well Simon, I will answer that question in three parts.

1: Here is a detailed pic of the area around the arrow, funny enough the arrow is put right in the middle of Old Town (Gamla Stan), the first part of Stockholm that was founded, in circa 1250.

Note to Lee and others from there: No, our parliament doesn't come with its own sauce. Somehow we manage anyway.

The statue you pointed out is of Gustav the third. Not a terribly interesting king but he was shot in the royal theatre in a plot orchestrated partly by his elder brother who then assumed the throne.
After he (Karl XIII) died, his adopted son Jean Baptiste Bernadotte (former star general to Napoleon) stepped in and here's where things started getting interesting again, after 100 years of losing ground to the russians and danes, and then Zzzzwip! Here I am!

2: This image shows more of Stockholm and also where I live in comparison to the arrow, a few points to note here:

Checkpoint A: This is where our prime minister Palme was waxed in 1989. Pissed a lot of good people off. Endless conspiracy theories sprung up since Olof Palme did a LOT of crazy (good-crazy) stough during his time in office, like breaking Sweden's neutrality and condemning the US bombing of Hanoi during christmas in '72.

Checkpoint B: This is where our foreign minister Anna Lindh was retired two years ago. The murderer (Mijailo Mijailovitch) is interesting as he is a product of the lacking youth care in Sweden, well all of the west actually. Coming from a troubled home and being shipped between juvenile centers for ten years, he was given like 20 different pills and liquids to stave off psychosis and depression, on which he was hopped up that fateful day. He had no motive for the murder, he just went off the deep end.
Oh when will society learn? *takes off fire helmet and pats Paul Newman's shoulder*

I can neither confirm or deny that. There's nothing to see. The NSA is not spying on you. Move along this post is unimportant.

Although NSA does monitor communications. CTTs in the Navy are trained not just to monitor foreign communications, but own forces as well. CTTs are the Navy branch of the NSA and Naval Intelligence has always had the motto, "In God We Trust, All Others We Monitor".

Is that Area 51 you are pointing to?

I love looking on Google Earth around that area - it's well imaged - even better when people provide overlays.

It's weird those large triangles in the desert around Area 51. And the huge run-way.

Pity the Nazca lines aren't better imaged.

Currently, they think the hurricane might even diminish so far as to a Tropical Storm.

I'm mostly concerned that power might be out for afew days at my apartment- this kind of crap always happens right after I buy a ton of perishible groceries. [Roll Eyes]

I noticed that the hurricane symbol and new state slogan, but better to warn.

The last I heard from earlier this afternoon was that Wilma was going to thoroughly mess up the Yucatan before moving to Florida as a weak hurricane (low category two at landfall).

As for your groceries, how about a hurricane block party the day before it comes in? Round up the rest of your neighbors who have perishable items, and do a huge blowout with lots of alcohol. You can sleep off the hangover during the hurricane, too.

Googling my name turns up eight pictures, three of which are of an erect penis. It's the same erect penis, actually. No, it's not mine (although I'd kill for that body).

I've driven through Caldwell, TX, a few times to visit my sister while she was in college. It's a nice, little town that bills itself as the Kolache Capital of the World. The next Kolache Festival is September 9, 2006, so mark your calendar.

"Kolache"?

If you ever drive through Lake City Florida, stop and ask if they know anyone named "Caldwell".

They're all related to me, all crazier than shit religous nutjobs that sometimes handle snakes and speak in tounges in the trailers they call "church" though how anything on cinderblocks can be consecrated is beyond me.

Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham are their gods.

Kolaches are delicious. It's a bread roll that's stuffed with either a fruit or meat filling. They're popular breakfast items down here; the sausage kolaches are kinda like pigs in a blanket (only it's bread instead of a pancake). It's a Czech food that immigrated to Texas.

Did I mention they're delicious? This one little breakfast shop in the Galleria sells an awesome bacon, egg, cheese, and jalopeo pepper kolache. So good.

The furthest I've made it into Florida is Destin, and I don't think I'll be repeating that drive anytime soon. Something about all those bridges in Louisiana that creeps me the hell out. If I do ever find myself in Lake City, I'll try and keep myself out of trouble.

I was actually worried what would come up if I put my name in: B.J. Olejnik. I was suprised to get only 19 hits, 18 of which are artwork right from my own home page, and one picture of a location I suggested to Google Sightseeing.

I'm not saying what you get if you leave off my last name, but it wasn't quite as bad as I thought. It was still pretty bad, though.

Apparently I have a successful career as a swedish west-coast Formula 1 racer.

That's Niklas in the middle of the picture, there, holding the trophy. I look so happy. *sniph*

I also won silver at an international Judo tournament in Portugal.

It seems I have a real swedish sports name, because this me is the worst. The guy is blond, one year younger than me and three centimeters taller.
I'm not even going to comment on his interests.

That's how Google's DNS servers perform load-balancing, yeah.

That is indeed what happens. However I can go to other Google pages like .de, .co.uk, .fr, etc and they stay on those pages.

What's that say about Brad Pitt? how does that relate to soccer?

I'd do him.

It asks "Ser p TV?", means "sees/watches on TV?". When he watches TV, he watches the Pitt.
Yeah...I guess I'd do him too. [Mad]

I went to the outskirts of the north pole in the summer of 1991, with my family. It was nice, perpetual spring blossom and the lowest the sun set was a foot over the horizon, measured with kid's hands.

1/ I have never seen drink measured by weight. Could you convert that into, y'know, English?

2/ A pint of rum: This is why Americans are terrible at knowing how to drink.

Not hard, twist the bottle cap off and enjoy. Not a huge fan of rum though. Even though I think I have a bottle of it in the kitchen.

Cool.

I'm trying to get up there for a long weekend, but now that I'm a managment type I can only choose one holiday not to work.
And I chose New Years Eve/Day.

Still, mabye Tropical Storm Gamma will wipe us out for another week and I'll split town to Orlando....

England still measures things in miles and, even worse, stones. Surely you aren't so metricized as to not know an ounce is also a measure of volume?

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Yes, but we call them fluid ounces.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

Well duh. A 40 ouncer is 40 fluid ounces. I got the conversion from a UK website, for christ's sake.

So, even when the context is obvious, do you also make sure to specify "statute miles" and "avoirdupois pounds"?

Yeah, hurricane season for the North Atlantic ends on the 30th of November. However, tropical storms have formed in early December before. In 2003, both tropical storms Odette and Peter formed in December.
