So I was in a bit of a click-stream on youtube and I saw this (actually re-watched it as I'd seen it on TV earlier this year.

Australian 60 Minutes reporter Richard Carleton went back to Chernobyl 20 years after the accident.

Then I saw this - a short film called "Pripyat - City of the Future".

"If you are for nuclear power, it will save us from catastrophe. If you are against it, it is the catastrophe."

Nuclear power has come a long way since Chernobyl. Chernobyl was an RBMK-1000 Graphite moderated nuclear plant. Which is the same type used for testing for the Manhattan project. That is old technology. And it was unsafe from the very beginning.

The CANDU reactors are much safer. And Canada actually markets the design worldwide. So far it's the safest form of nuclear power. Until someone finally unlocks the secrets of the sun.

I'm neither for, or against nuclear power. If it can be harnessed and utilized safely, then I believe it can save us from catastrophe. Nuclear weapons on the other hand, I am completely against. I believe Albert Einstien said it best:

"I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought. But I can tell you, World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

I will watch that video later, but as an aside, I turn you to the Martin Cruz Smith novel Wolves Eat Dogs, which is mostly set within the 30-KM Zone of Exclusion.

Wasn't that "bike ride" thing debunked as mostly staged ...several years back?

Nuclear power is safer than ever now...that we're giving the technology to....INDIA.

Because India has such an exceptional track record of governmental responsibility and as the good of the public as it's primary concern.

Well, Indians have that whole Hindu outlook going on - they don't mind being killed thanks to the wonders of reincarnation.

On the otherhand, Union Carbide was an American company who were cutting corners in order to save money...

Yes, yes..I meant the living conditions in general.
Most people aspire to rise above shithole conditions in one of the world's most corrupt governmental systems.

I wonder if they would mind being constantly reincarnated into a radioactive post-apocalyptic nightmare? [Razz]

Personally, I'm all for nuclear power. I'd also like to have nuclear rockets for space travel, but that's a bit of wishful thinking right now.

Hmmm reading more.

The woman in the sixty minutes clip that takes the reporter around - Richard Carleton - died earlier this year: http://chernobyl.in.ua/en/ghost_town/42

So infact did Richard Carleton, himself.

Both weren't cancer.
