.......another shooting has occurred in a high school, this time at Columbine High school, southwest of Denver, Colorado. Initial reports say about 15 people hurt. The assailants are said to be members of the "Trenchcoat Mafia", as they wore trenchcoats at the time. Rumours had it that they were armed with shotguns and grenades, and that some students are being held hostage, only about 90% of the students in the High school have been accounted for.

More news as it develops........

Ten bucks says the warning signs were already there, and nothing was done about it.

*previous improper levity deleted*

Holy ****. I just finally got home and saw the news.
Apologies for the earlier version of this post.

The bastards that did this are now apparently being reported as dead, apparent suicide.

May their souls burn in hell for eternity. I have rarely been so pissed off in my life.

My coverage says that two of them are dead, a third who was apparently a friend of theirs was brought out in handcuffs, and three more guys dressed in camoflauge and/or black trenchcoats, also associates of the perps, were apprehended while "descending" upon the school.

So four of them may still be alive (for now).

And yeah, Tom, they will try to blame this on the guns, rather than the people. You watch.

It's the guns, the people, AND the society.

In proper order, it's:
1: The people. They chose to do this, and we are all ultimately responsible for our own actions. This is THEIR fault. They planned this, they carried it out, they make the bombs, they pulled the triggers. Nobody MADE them do it.

2: The society. What created these beings? What was their home life really like? They are currently generally believed to have been the "outcasts" of the school. Is this what being shunned can do to people? (my answer: no. I was a social misfit too, and worse, and I've yet to shoot anybody)

3: The guns. They're inanimate objects. They have no say in how they're used. By themselves, they are harmless. Only dangerous in some PERSON'S hands.

Total tally: 25 dead, 20 wounded.

Just horrible..... A moment of silence for the dead. My condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

Just got back from a Chrysalis meeting; the preacher talked about it. He was real shakened up. Good sermon; anyway it's in my prayers.

For all the little points of light.....

The little points of light...
We watched them spark, delighted.
We watched them burn, with joy.
Planted them where the harmful wind
Couldn't snuff them out.
Sheltered them, in the dry, cool places.
Preserved them, when we could.
We never thought we'd see them dim.
We never thought they could.

The little points of light...
We nourished them with sunlight,
We nourished them with love,
We placed them out, to see them grow,
Against our better judgment.
No shelter there, out in the world.
The angry wind will blow.
We always thought they'd be there,
We never let them know...

The little points of light...
We watched them snuff out,
One by one.
We watched them die before us.
Death there shelter now provides,
The world, it cries in chorus.
Helpless, watching lives plucked out.
And this is what they mourn,
No longer do they flicker,
No longer do they burn.

I came across this poem by Walt Whitman, written in 1865 about the horrors of death in the Civil War, I thouhgt it quite touching in light of current events.

~~~
Look Down Fair Moon
by Walt Whitman - 1865
Look down fair moon and bathe this scene,
Pour softly down night's nimbus floods on faces ghastly, swollen, purple
On the dead on their backs with arms toss'd wide,
Pour down your unstinted nimbus sacred moon.
And this one by Thomas Hardy.
The Pity of It
by Thomas Hardy
I walked in loamy Wessex lanes, afar
From rail-track and from highway, and I heard
In field and farmstead many an ancient word
Of local lineage like "Thu bist," "Er war,"
"Ich woll," "Er sholl," and by-talk similar,
Nigh as they speak who in this month's moon gird
At England's very loins, thereunto spurred
By gangs whose glory threats and slaughters are.
Then seemed a Heart crying: "Whosoever they be
At root and bottom of this, who flung this flame
Between kin folk kin tongued even as are we,
Sinister, ugly, lurid, be their fame;
May their familiars grow to shun their name,
And their brood perish everlastingly."
I'll never get a wife anyway but I'll never put any kids on this world. I said it numerous times before but now I'm really certain.
BTW I read they aimed for the black students.
I'm disgusted.
Lunatics + firearms + lax school security = Massacre.
I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
I wonder if this will have a Dunblane-like effect in the US. (In the UK we had a clampdown on handguns, etc.) Rather early to say, but my gut tells me it's not likely.
Last I heard, the death toll had been revised down to 15, including the killers. That's at least something, although it's 13 too many.
I just hope the amount of attention this is getting doesn't inspire copycat crimes. It was probably a good idea for the Chicago paper to only put the event of page two, so the killers wouldn't be glorified the attention they were seeking.
