Now, let me give you an idea of what a close knit family environment this is....
Of course there are people crying as soon as the announcement was made, more crying half way thru the announcement, and all by the end of the meeting. Our regional manager had to make the announcement and was crying himself before he was finished. This is one of the sadest things I've ever had to participate in. I'm sure I'll have to answer question (ones I don't have answers to) on Monday. 
Was it a surprise? DEFINATELY! Over half of the assembly lines had new products being introduced for production...including mine. I'm in the middle of making arrangements for the new components - dunno what to do about that now. Anyway, I was a few minutes late to the mandatory meeting because I was committing our company to the purchase of 5,000 pounds of steel. Can't wait to see how the company gets out of the commitments - btw...this isn't a bankruptcy deal.
How hard is it going to hit home? LOL - OMG! I'm the primary income in my family. *sigh*

This has happened to several places around here, for one reason or another. If it is a new facility, some one will reopen it at some point. We have a stamping plant here that has changed hands, closed and reopened more then once. It's running now, with some good paying jobs, so have some hope.

That's the hope I'm holding onto. But considering the department I'm in, I would think that the new owners would transfer some of their own Purchasing Agents to this facility. It would still leave open some positions in the department though. The problem is...How fast would the new owners fill the plant? It's 240,000 square feet (and $11 million)- it would likely take them a considerable amount of time. Time I can't wait around unemployed. I still have hope though.
Stamping plant? We should talk over ICQ. The company I work for uses stamping plants and they are loyal to them. I'm curious if the one you know of is one that we work with.

Mmmmm....nope - I don't believe I recognize the location. Ah, well - It's not important anyway.
I did find out today that my assembly lines are moving out on January 15th. There's a catch to this though. My job can't be phased out until February 8th because of NC laws pertaining to company closings. The state requires the employees to be given a 60 day notice. This means I'm gonna twiddle my thumbs for a few weeks. Oh joy!
And they did allow us another tidbit of info too. There will be a severance package. The question at this point is..."Is it worth staying for?" They are supposed to be giving us details on the severance package by the end of the week. I can't complain really...it does buy a little more time. A very small amount of time I'll bet. Time will tell. At least I'll get through Christmas.

Yes, I'm afraid it does suck that your plant is closing down, Mrs. Deaver. And I think you'll find that not only is it deeply insensitive that they're doing it just before Crimbo, it's also completely intentional. Catching the workforce off guard and all that sort of thing.
I wish I could suggest some solution. But I can't. What I can promise you is that venting it all in Whiny American Thread #2463 isn't going to help at all. Jordan seems to have brightened up, and become a lot more self-irrelevent. Which is good. Frank's calmed down a great bit, passing on most of his previous annoying habits onto Omega. And Sol is currently "dead sexy". Apparently.
And I'm at university with attractive women! Yay!

Plant closes so that someone else can go and make more money elsewhere. Capital flight. Oh, yes it's a good thing when people get tossed out of work. Grand in fact. Toughens them up so's they can get used to disappointment.
Still capital needs labor. Labor needs capital. Neither is supreme in the symbiotic relationship. However, due to my favor of humanity over money, I side with labor in the contest.
But the question that needs to be answered is what does the United States and it's citizens do as money and the labor to create product is shiped off shore?

We were informed a few months ago that our facility (out of several - six, I think) was the only one that was making a profit. In a meeting yesterday, we were told that because of the size of the facility and overhead, the corporate board members elected to sell our facility to recoup some losses. Why ours? Well it's the nicest - $11 million dollars nice! Out of 240,000 sq. ft, we are only using about 170,000. Personally, I would think that it stands to reason that they would move stuff to our facility. Makes too much sense - too easy. All of the other facilities are old, dilapidated, and have alot of safety regulations. The baord members are looking strictly at the financial aspect of all this.
Now here are some of the contradicting issues. They moved the production to another facility whose labor rates are 12% higher than ours. But hey, the other facility is having to go to prison facilities to get workers. They have a horrendous reputation and can't keep employees - but then inmates are just about free labor right? All I can really say in this regard is "What the hell? You have a good honest family struggling to make their way in this world and this company takes their jobs and gives them to inmates!"
Another contradicting issue...The facility that the production is moving to has basically cut their own throats. You see, when the lines came to our facility - they came from the facility they are moving back to. The customers are pissed that it's going back, the suppliers (vendors) are pissed. The customers can't get anything on time from them - and can't get anyone to return a call either. The vendors were left hanging with open balances on Purchase Orders - giving them incentive to NOT supply them again.
There's other things too, but it's really too much to get into at this point. The way I see it, the board members have set this company up to fail. I am curious to see how it all turns out, but I don't think I'll be able to keep track of it.
I am appreciative on little fact (for the moment). I'm ever grateful that I'm not on the receiving end and believing that I have a secure future with this move. Oh, boy! What a mess! And they don't even realize it yet. They will know by mid March.

The Government spent 1.251 trillion on regulation in 1990. that amount has surely gone up.
Regulations add 33% to the cost of building an airplane engine and as much as 95% to the cost of a new vaccine.
Now, I'm sure that MANY regulations are helpful and good... but at THIS price?? Is it any wonder that so many companies are failing to turn profits?

My supervisor recommends using the net to find other job opportunities *raised eyebrow*! I'll either flood this board with utterly useless posts/threads or have long drawn out conversations with everyone I can think of over the phone. 3 assembly lines - $400,000 past due
Now what is wrong with this picture? Oh and one other clue...the $60,000 past due that my plant is in is because that 'other' plant (the one our lines are going to) has not shipped us the parts we ordered from them!
I am truly trying to help the other plant keep my lines out of past due mode by communicating with them. I'm telling them what parts to get ordered for my lines - so they will have them coming in when my lines get there. I'm really wondering if it's worth it though. I won't give up though. At least I'll be able to walk away feeling good about myself - whether I get anything else out of it or not.
I don't understand why the board members can't see what they are doing! If they would leave the lines here and let us take care of the customers, the opportunities for survival would be great. Give us the other lines - don't take ours. *sigh*
Ah well, time to dust off the seat of my pants and move on. Nothing I can do to change the plans - and I've accepted that. I will move on - but to what?
