And I thought Aschcroft's tittiphobia was bad...

At this rate we'll 17th century Puritans in no time. And Europe thought we were already prudes on the subject, now we have the Bush administration conservative christian morals making it worse.

In the past I never thought or cared about politics much. Until about the past year or so. I view myself as neither a Republican or Democrat, a conservative or liberal. I try to take a more objective middle ground. I'll hear about some liberal special interest group wanting one thing that I think is stupid but then the conservatives pull shit like this. Or with gay marriage, the government doesn't care about straight people getting married, why should they care about gays doing it? That this group over there has less freedoms than that group over here. I know that bit was off topic. It's just the government enforcing these conversative morals down everyone's throat and laughing at liberal views is annoying as hell.

Christian conservatives, long skeptical of Gonzales, greeted the pornography initiative with what the Family Research Council called "a growing sense of confidence in our new attorney general."
Ah, future-mayor Gonzales?

For good or for ill, American society is inherently reactionary. When the next liberal administration takes over, we'll see equally dramatic reversals toward the other side. Personally, I think it's a shame that this pendulum has to swing so broadly, but c'est la vie.

Ever the optimist, I take this view:
(1.) The roots of pornography lie in human nature itself.
(2.) It is ultimately futile to fight human nature.
(3.) Ergo, this "War on Porn" will ultimately be lost.
(4.) This is a good thing, because I likes me my porn but good.

I gotta laugh at the hyper-reactionary nature of American politics, but what is the 'Family Research Council'? I mean we all know families are disastrous for our mental health why do you have an organisation that promotes them?

Europe thinks the British are prudes let alone Americans, the humorous thing about this is that it's the FBI members themselves who most find this material for comedy.

I'm confused. Is porn going to actually be made illegal? Will Ron Jeremy be hunted down and hung (hur hur)? What exactly are they going after?

You know. Really dirty stuff. Stuff that's too dirty. Naughty stuff. Dirty, dirty, naughty, filthy stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Stuff like that. Got to get all that dirty stuff. Heh, heh...

An initiative is being fomulated to issue chastity belts on everyone which will only be unlocked after wedding vows are made. Once that is complete, Phase 3 of the Republican Christian Conservative Movement involves attaching purity collars to everyone which will send an electric shock through the body everytime he/she looks at porn, touches themselves, or thinks unpure thoughts. Homosexual thoughts will result in higher shock levels to electrocute the evil dirty gayness out of a person.

But to seriously answer Liam's question, the U.S., like, I would imagine, most states, has laws against obscenity, which usually just sit there being quietly ignored, because no one actually knows, in a legal sense, what "obscenity" is, if it is in fact anything. Every now and then enterprising politicians will either A.) engage in a much needed defense of the nation's moral fiber by cracking down on naughty things or B.) pick on naughty things in order to pander to the anti-naughty voters, depending upon your point of view.

I'd say the likeliest outcomes are 1.) nothing, because this is just an attempt to shore up the segments of the evangelical Christian block, who according to some polls are beginning to wonder whether endless war and utter domestic incompetance are really all that much fun, or 2.) a new set of rules about how many of one kind of organ can be seen close to another kind, and the like.

Utah has had a "porn czar" for some time now. My search for news stories about it didn't work out how I had planned, though. However, I think I am going to open a Cafepress store selling "porn czar" labeled clothing, to appeal to the kids who want the hip cachet of pornographic-themed couture and are also totally into Russian history. I'm thinking a photoshopped image of Stalin relaxing poolside while a pair of chesty bikini-clad ladies lean suggestively over him. (In case any of you graphic designers want to get in on the ground floor here. . .)

On a related note, if you're interested in Russian pornography designed to discredit the Ukrainian Orange Revolution, check this out: Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko last Friday brushed aside news of a pornographic film due to be shot in Russia soon whose main characters are based on her and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Of course, that's ex-Prime Minister now, though not because of this.

And there's a Ukrainian response film in the works. A whole bunch of stuff about it.

And as long as I'm scavaging Bruce Sterling's blog: 'Islamic Trojan' disrupts smut surfing

What happens when the person thinks masochist thoughts?

I'm confused by something in Simon's second link there. Russians are making a porn film to discredit the president of Georgia and the (former) PM of Ukraine. The Ukrainians respond by making a gay porn film about their own president? Buh?

Posted by Marauth (Member # 1320) on :

Actually they respond by making a gay porno featuring the Russian president and the Ukrainian opposition leader who is pro-Russian, you know the guy who lost the election, and had to be forced out by popular revolution.

"I guess this means we've won the war on terror," said one exasperated FBI agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity because poking fun at headquarters is not regarded as career-enhancing. "We must not need any more resources for espionage."
That sums up my viowpoint nicely.

To borrow a catchphrase from the NRA:
When porn is outlawed, only outlaws will have porn.

Ah, right. Who's bright idea was it to hold an election between two guys with such superficially similar names, anyway?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

That's like the rest of the world asking us "Why did you elect the son of a unpopular former-President?"

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Yes, well... Why did we? Or, rather, they? I sure didn't.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Well, I'm blaming you anyway.

As for the majority of America, the first time around it was either the Gorebot or Bush and George had a kegger and then it was like a week later and man, we must have been sooo fucked up and the election was over...

The second time around, we just decided to go the nihilist route.
Kinda to see how bad things could really get, y'know?
seemed like a good idea at the time.

I wish the modernisation would spread over to Belarus already, I'm tired of hearing about all the shit the people have to take there.
They should kick Lukashenko out with his little hat and umbrella thrown after him and hold up a big "Ok thank you bye bye now" as happened in their neighboring countries.

Peaceful revolution is the new tiramisu, almost reaching Janewayian levels of do-goodery.

Also the US is prewd. No brown bags in our parks and the blowjobs are ranked on scales.

(Where is that Magnus anyway? The west wall won't hold forever and the enemy is getting cocky)

Kinda like the war on drugs?

what's next for bush you ask? maybe a war on caffiene?

Methinks that 8 agents and a supervisor would be better spent trying to find out what the president smokes in the oval office, cuz whatever it is should be banned and anyone caught smoking it should be put 2 death.

I'm just glad Bush can't get re-elected again, unless he changes that 2...

Well, we sure lost the war against the Taliban- Afghanistan just elected a former Taliban top dog who (among the general oppression of the people and killing of dissidents, artists and raped/unfaithful women) was in charge of destroying all those Buddahist statues a few years back.

Not that his country needs any cultural heritage when the have ALLAH!

If I were President, I'd devote money away from further nuclear weapon testing and build 50 meter tall lifelike robots in the forms of Buddah, Shiva, Jesus, Jehova, Mohammed and ...er....Gammera, and have them lay waste to the entire missle east.

It would serve no real purpose, but boy, it sure would be fun to see Al Jezzera explain it (or American evangelists for that matter).

Am I the only one that thinks that the Gaza Strip being destroyed by a giant flying turtle would be funny?

No, of course not.
