Someone just told me that the registry of new Defiant is going to be *dare I type this*
NCC-74205-A .....

I hope he is COMPLETELY wrong about this!!!

Everything I've read and heard says it's true.

What's so wrong about having the -A?

Because this new Defiant is (at least) the THIRD ship called Defiant.

So? According to a mention in the Motion Picture novelization, there was at least one other Fed ship called Enterprise. . .

Yes, but that ship was pre-NCC-registry.

The Defiant I am talking about has registry-number NCC-1764 (TOS: "The Tholian Web").

Well, NX-74205-A would be correct, since it would be the second ship with that registry. I wish we could just forget about this suffix nonsense, though.

Okay, maybe you can have the registry NCC-74205-A.
But NX-74205-A is IMPOSSIBLE!!

Every ship with a NX registry is the first of its class (maybe not the first FINISHED ship, but that's another story). You just CANNOT have both NX and -A in one registry (the Dauntless being a VERY obvious exception!!).

(Something tells me that I was better off putting this one at the Flameboard.)

So your saying when the Defiant would have became NCC it should have went from NX 74205 to NCC 1764-A?

Well, I think thy do this to remember a part. ship (org. Enterprise!) no just any ship. The Constitution Defiant was not very memorable, yet the Defiant one is.

Keeping the registry alive with the addition of a suffix may be a way of honoring an illustrious ship.

Doesnt it seem like there should not be another Defiant? Since the Defiant has been in just about every major battle concerning Starfleet since its construction, the name should be retired.

Starfleet seems to have far too many ships to "retire" names...

So somebody tell me, what was the (*&!@#! point of destroying the stpid Defiant in the first place if they are just going to bring back the same damn ship with an A attatched to it. Wow they are really original.

I think the new Defiant should be named Defiant as a tribute, but not the same designed from the dedication plaque to Sisko's office. It should be sort of an "upgrade". Maybe combining some of the elements from the Defiant Pathfinder. Basically fixing the Defiant's problems and adding more firepower. Something like that.

I think that if they either make specific mention of the fact that it is given a suffix as a way of honoring the previous ship, or if they do make some 'modifications' and point that out it would be fine. But if they just stick an A onto it without any explanation or just because they indulged some stupid fantasy about blowing it up but were too lazy to come up with another ship so they just pasted an A on, then it would be pretty bad. BTW, have we gotten confirmation that the ship is for sure going to be another Defiant class? How do we know it's not a Steamrunner, Akira, or GASP Sovereign? Maybe all that talk we've been hearing about a Sovereign in the last episodes isn't about the E-E but about the new Defiant?

Ok, okay, wishful thinking I know. But still...dare to dream, it could be something other than a Defiant class.

Why are they giving the New defiant an "A"

if they do that the should give the Yamato it's "E" (NCC 1305 E)

It might just be me, but I don't think the Defiant should get a registry suffix.

Shadow:
Our planet has millions of names from various cultures, history, and geography. If you add the worlds of the Federation, the list of available names is in the tens of millions. A name could be retired and another used in its place. I believe that giving the name Defiant and the suffix results from a lack of imagination.

But, then, all we've seen are English names, plus one or two Vulcan ones...

I doubt it, unless the Bolians use names like Lexington, Excalibur, Yamaguchi, etc.

Alien names...
I can see it now...

"Captain, it's the USS Bifrxczim!"

Or given the radical differences between some languages and others...

"Captain, it's the USS Triangle, dot, bird, squiggly line, figure-eight, ampersand!" (heiroglyphics)

"Captain, it's the Bynar ship USS 10011011100010101!"

"Captain, it's the USS Modo and Pilor at the Valley of Tarkal!" (for the Children of Tama)

Mind you, think of the words that might be swaerwords in another language. . . Imagine an Alien Nation crossover where the USS Sykes encounters the Newcomer race, and completely fails to be taken seriously. . . 8)

Maybe all those ship names we think are English really ARE alien names. Talk about your theories of indeterminacy.

First: he he heee. What about the "USS Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra"?

Why doesn't Starfleet use the names of sitcoms and of notorius killers for its ships?

Chekov:"Keptain, the USS Cheers and her sister sheep the USS Fraiser are approaching at wery high speed!"

Dax:"Benjamin, we've just lost the USS Saved by the Bell:The New Class and the USS Josef Goebbels!"

Sisko:"The Jack the Ripper and the Father Ted are supposed to be covering our flanks;they're in too close!"

"This is Captain Braxton of the Federation timeship Roseanne."
