When did Captain Picard go totally bald? I find that picture of him as a crewman hard to believe without a trace of a follicle on his head. I am under the impression that Picard was in his early twenties in that pic. Remember that in Tapestry, the earlier Picard had a full mop of hair as a cadet. Spontaneous baldness?

Razor blade?

Why not? Everyone goes through at least a couple of hairstyles in their lifetime. Picard could easily have had a "purposefully bald" period during his early Academy days, with plenty of time to grow everything back in time for the Starbase Earhart flashback.

Ok, so how old is Picard anyway?

1) According to Beverly, Shinzon was designed to replace Picard at nearly his current age (I'm referencing the script, but I believe the line was in the movie likewise.) Let's say this is 2375, when Picard was 70.

2) By that time, he would've skipped 30 years of his life to achieve this age more quickly. Hence, he would've lived for only 40 years.

3) However, the acceleration process was never activated, meaning that Shinzon is now 43. However, according to the script, he is supposed to be in his twenties, and Tom Hardy was in fact about 26 years old during filming.

On the other hand, if Logan assumed that Picard is as old as Stewart, Shinzon was to replace him at 59 by living only 29 years, in which case he would've been 32 now, which looks about right.

This is not the first time someone made this mistake -- in "Tapestry", Q puts the incident at 30 years ago, whereas it clearly was over 40 years ago according to the calendar dates. If line mentioned above was in the movie, this would be the second piece of evidence to the effect that Picard isn't that old.

Add to this the fact that Patrick Stewart went bald at a young age anyway... before his 20's were out, IIRC.

My high school band director went as bald as Patrick Stewart is now before he graduated from college. I think he told me he started losing his hair in his late teens, and it almost all fell out before his 21st birthday.

Back to the topic, I suppose Picard may have tried out other hairstyles during his academy days. I have a lot of friends who have experimented with the completely bald look, so Picard may have done the same (not realizing that he may one day lose it all for good). That's about the only way to fit in that he still had hair in "Tapestry" as well as in Bev Crusher's flashback in the episode where Troi, Riker, and Crusher all get mind-raped by the traveling telepathic aliens (I really need to start looking up episode titles).

I haven;t seen the movie yet, but, if the young Picard in the picture is completely bald, and the current Picard still has the ring of hair around the sides and back of his head, doesn't this pretty much indicate beyond doubt that young-Picard's head was shaved?

Yes, I tend to agree. My dad tells a story about how, in his Royal Air Force basic training, he and he mates were given a shouting for their hair being too long -- so they shaved it all off, kind of as a joke. Given the young Picard's personality, one can imagine him pulling a similar stunt, no?

But I remember seeing him in some flashback aboard the Stargazer, he had black, swept-back hair (cardassian style), and a bright uniform.

So I believe he had a "usual" hairstyle until the top went bald.

Patrick Stewart has grown a beard now. Just thought I'd tell you.

I personally have known at least three separate individuals (a teacher, an old football coach, and a family friend) who shaved their heads when they were younger and later became bald for real.

In all three cases, their predominant thought on the matter was: "Gee, I'm glad I don't have to go through the trouble of shaving anymore!"

I don't see any real conflict here. Look at what TSN said...

Why is it necessary to give examples of people who shaved their heads to prove that someone can shave his head?

What does Patrick Stewart's history have to do with Picard's history? If he had a common cold at the age of five, that doesn't mean Picard did likewise.

Can you explain to me how this is not newbie logic?

Black hair slicked Cardassian style? WTF? where praytell did you see this..

Here's the relevant info:

In "Tapestry," Picard was shown as an Ensign, circa 2327, age 22 or so, with a full head of hair, played in flashback by Marcus Nash.

In "Violations," Picard is shown as a Captain, circa the mid 2350s, age 50 or so, with a receding hairline combover, played in flashback by Patrick Stewart and a toupee. This was when he and Beverly viewed Jack Crusher's body. IT wasn't a slicked back style, it was merely a bit of brown hair combed over but definitely receding. So we know that Picard didnt go completely bald before this point (this was about 10 years before "Encounter at Farpoint").. they even parodied his combover, because, when the telepathic rape of Beverly continued, they showed Jev in Picard's uniform, wearing Picard's bandage, with his hair badly combed over also.

Im probably not the first to say this but since when cant they give new hair to once where there was none? They can replace your spine, and they can grow a little hair, or does Picard(who i respect) like to be a crome-dome?!!

you are the first to say that.

is confusing when given you post where once there was sense made!

BTW, perhaps Picard could grow hair using technology.

But you wanna know something? He didn't. And, furthermore, no one really minds (or cares). It's so far out into the realm of non-issue, and has been for about 15 years.

I like that im the first person in what oo say... 15 years to bring this up... i like that!

I mean you are the first person to say it in such a convoluted way that I needed to read it three times and then rearrange the letter so sense that they made!

But you were the first person to mention it today. That I know of. If that makes you feel better.

At least, on the internet. In this thread.

Considering the technology the Federation has, it should also be possible for people to ditch that boring old symmetrical biped pattern altogether, in favor of custom bodies shaped like Half-Life monsters, or classic cars, or ambulatory kitschy corporate logos from the 22nd century.

Unless Picard is allergic to Follixol.

The "shaves, then gradually loses hair" theory certainly fits the evidence better than the "goes bald, then wears various wigs that imitate gradual hair loss" theory. Somewhere in between would be the "goes bald, tries a cure, which only works for a couple of decades until balding starts again, doesn't try a second cure" theory.

None of these, though, would be a good reason for Picard to stare at that picture and sigh for his lost hair. How *did* he act when looking at his younger, Hardy Boy self? Did he touch his head or something?

He's constantly growing and then shaving a beard. He has one in every (almost) interview I've seen him in.

Nope. Hair wasn't brought up at all, through actions or words. He was just looking nostalgically at a picture of him when he was a cadet, and thinking about being young and cocky.

Kinda like how Frakes shaves off the beard when he's not Riker, eh? [Smile]
