Does anyone know why this character in the new DS9 books is still a Commander at the age of 101? Are his reasons stated in any book at all?

He's an Intelligence officer and thus has to try to keep a low profile.

Yes they are: he was Starfleet's top Tactical/Special Ops agent and was more useful as a "mere" commander in part because it allowed him a degree of anominity.
Foreign powers took little notice of a "mere commander" that appeared to be only a minor floating tactical advisor and so kept little to no records on him personally.

Vaughn still had "mission commander" status when he was assigned to a starship for some imporntant assignment so rank wasnt a big issue while he was still working for SI.

The old man still has pull in the upper ranks though.

I really wish they could make episodes of the new DS9 series of books (sigh!).

And it states as much somewhere in the first few he's in, probably either the Avatar duology or Mission Gamma book 1. I'll check today.

Ah ha! I thought that it would be something like that, but wanted to be sure - thanks! [Big Grin]

Look forward to your confirmation Peregrinus. [Big Grin]

I actually have a follow up about Vaughn:

There seems to be a definite model for Vaughn... is this an actor, and if so, who?

Posted by Spike (Member # 322) on :

AFAIK the character of Vaughn was inspired by Sean Connery's portrayal of Captain Ramius in "The Hunt for Red October".

A bit. But the cover artists definitely have live or photo models to work from. Look inside the front cover and fire off a letter to the artist asking who the models are.

As for the Commander thing, I've confirmed it's not in Avatar or Abyss. I have to go to work now, so I can't keep skimming.

the photo models are a bit of a wierd issue i thought.. i remember an artist mentioning that all of the original pictures of Captain Calhoun from New Frontier were done from a photo model who preferred not to be identified

since other artists have started doing the character, he looks somewhat different. i assume they might not have access to the model, or prefer not to.

Vaughn is another strange issue: for the most part, all of his cover appearances have been rephotoshopped from a single image. it seems to be a photo, but it seems that they dont have access to the model for any more shots?

probably the people who pose are one shot deals, difficult (+ unneccessary) to find or hire again.

If the covers are modified photos, it's possible that the artist purchased stock photography, which would explain the reuse and manipulation of a single photograph.

I was always pretty sure that the same guy was being used for Calhoun (remembering seeing the books at Barnes and Noble) and was pretty impressed that the artist was going to the trouble to use the same model.

I've never seen this Vaughn guy, though, nor the covers, so I can't really comment.

He's 101 years old?

That what it said in Avatar Part 1 (or was it 2).

That's like saying "60-65 years old" by our standards.
Recall that McCoy was waaaaay older when TNG started and was still serving as an admiral.

147, according to the script -- which fit much better than the 137 that ended up in dialogue...

Mission Gamma, book 4: Lesser Evil. Pages 41-42. I won't describe any details -- or even who's talking -- so as to not spoil it for ya. [Smile]

I still think the whole relaunch series is top-drawer. Everything from "The Battle of Betazed" on I consider required DS9 reading. *heh* Looking very forward to the "Worlds of Deep Space Nine" duology...

*chuckle* I have a wonderful conjunction of a lengthy commute to work, and a good mass-transit system. Got a lot of time to read, thank Bob...
