Since I've started attending school for Digital Video Production, I've wanted to to something Sci-fi.

Since I saw the first Starship Exeter, I've wanted to do my own fan film.

However, set design for a traditional space based Sci-Fi is outside my budget, add (accurite) props, costumes, make-up, etc. for a Star Trek fan film and I'm well in to the impossible.

Then I thought about Assignment: Earth. Assignment: Earth would allow me to do Sci-Fi on location AND use elements of Star Trek.

I've again however, run into a few problems:
1. It is no longer the 60's
2. I still have a problem with accurite props.
3. I have no access to a cat that will sit still for more than five seconds.

problem 1 isn't an issue unless I go outside. But if I'm outside, there is little I can do to keep a more modern car from driving by. Location itself isn't really an issue because Vancouver seems to be able to be just about any US city.

None of these however are an issue if I deside to do an Assignment: Earth remake/reboot (like the new BSG)

What do people think about me doing this with Assignment: Earth? I know most people are against restarting Trek as a whole (I am for that matter) but this is but a small corner of a large universe. For that matter, what do people think of the possible inclusion of Trek elements if this basicly ignores the episode Assignment: Earth? Would it be stepping on continuity's toes too much? Should my Assignment: Earth exsist in a non-Trek universe?

Does anyone have any comments/questions/ideas?

Why does it have to be in the 60's? Why can't it be Gary Seven...the Next Generation? ( would that be Gary Eight? ) I don't see it as that much different than Enterprise.

A remake isn't bad... look at BSG. Also, you get to use then hi-tech looking gadgets from the 21st Century... a PDA scanning device, bluetooth wireless earpieces, high-yield explosives packed into an iPod Shuffle.

They did this with the novels about Khan and the Eugenics Wars. Gary Seven was the main character and the events took place in the 80s. The end of the first novel takes place in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

So "Assignment: Earth" doesn't even have to be a Next Generation or Gary 8. Yes, he's human, but he has access to temporal technology and alien mediciens.

Or, it can be a replacement operative. After all, whoever sent Gary Seven back in time had a reason. Those reasons may still be relevant today even with the end of the Cold War (somebody's gotta keep India and Pakistan or Israel and the Middle East from blowing each other up).

This is a great idea for a fan project. Keeps within the Star Trek universe and also fufills the dream of "Assignment: Earth." The original idea was for it to be a pilot for a spin-off series.

I've read the Eugenics Wars books and that is acctually most of my reference to the idea. I haven't seen the episode itself in ages.

Anyway, another reason I've been thinking about a remake is that I can show it to people who arn't Trek fans without having to explain alot of back story or show the original episode. If its a series set X years after in the same universe with one or more of the original characters its harder to introduce it to new people. And well, I'm lazy [Wink]

And then of course you have the problem of finding a Trek fan who's thin enough to play Gary Seven. . .

That's where you use the "Paula Abdul Vertical Stretch Lens" effect to shed those unwanted pounds.

Hopefully I can just use my fellow students or other student actors. Experience is Experience.

Failing that, I'll use action figures. No one will notice, right? [Wink]

A few episode concepts

Assignment: Earth
A mysterious extra-terrestrial force sends a specially bred human Agent to save the earth from itself. When a nuclear weapons platform is to be launched Gary Seven must cause to to be detonated in a low earth orbit to show the extreme danger of nuclear weapons.

The President (1)
When a world leader (US President?) is replaced by a duplicate, Gary Seven must avert a devastating war.

The Conspiracy (2)
Gary Seven must cover up extra-terrestrial involvement in the death of a world leader, as well as his own apparent connection to the leader's death.

Rogue Agent
Gary must stop a former Agent from causing the war he is trying to avert.

What about an episode where he examines future infractions from other series... 1947 - DS9; 1969 - TOS; 1986 - TOS; 1996 - Voyager; 2024 - DS9.

I'd recommend using a new, different agent for a fan film, set in the present day. That way, all you really have to replicate are the equivalents of some props, and you're gold.

I liked the Khan novels, but didn't buy the extended concept. I think that a new agent would be sent to Earth periodically to keep things fresh...

**SPOILERS FOR THE KHAN NOVELS**

For whatever reason, Gary Seven was the ONLY operative sent by the aliens, and he and his assistant were basically IT, for over thirty years. By the end of the novels, Roberta was in overall charge of the operation, with Rain Robinson her new assisant.

I think it would be cool to do a ST fan film. While I do enjoy all of the Star Wars fan films, I would like to see more ST fan films.
