I don't know if you guys ever noticed this, but why was this male crew member wearing a dress in the episode "Where No One Has Gone Before"?

Posted by Josh (Member # 1884) on :

It's the "Skant" uniform variant. It makes a few other appearances in flashbacks on TNG.

It's part of the early days when Gene had the whole unisex uniform idea floating around. Thankfully, it didn't stick around for very long.

Bah, can't edit:

I'd wear one. I like a nice healthy breeze round my privates,

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Yah, I'd noticed this before. Yar even wears one of these at the very end of "EaFP". It's the only time I recall seeing it on her and you can barely make it out since she's standing behind the tactical console. They look silly.

Funny, no matter how many times you watch an episode on TV, you never notice things like unisex uniforms until you see the screencaps.

I remember that from the first time around, and even THEN they looked dumb. Luckily they were gone by the middle of the first season, though they were visible in stock footage of people walking around the corridors until the second.

Unfortunately, the rather free-form uniform variations were approved in the non-canon comics, too. Remember these examples from the first TNG comics?

Oh jesus I have that one. I hated the Brig (or detention block as they say) guard helmets.

Don't even get me started on the space Santa Clause that only Geordi can see

I like the superhero capes!

Edit: BTW what is the comic called and what company published it?

OMG... someone bust out The Art of Star Trek sketches for the TNG uniforms!

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Wow... talk about totally craptastic art. The guy in the first frame looks like a red-haired ape with a cape on. "OOH OOH AHH!! Me run out door shaking fists... with cape on!!!"

Why in the hell would you put capes on Starfleet officers? I mean, I know it was the 90's... but come on.

Here's some pics from the same comic.

Enterprise Detention Deck, complete with old BSG helmets

Riker gets really excited about separation -

Seriously, what the fuck is with the helmets?

Just what the fuck was that all about? [Razz]

In the Space Santa scan - I like Troi(?)'s dresslike object.

If it's the first comic - She has her hair down either like the "Cheerleader look" that was unseen or like her look in Season 2.

So... was the only reference these guys had of the Enterprise taken from printouts of bad screencaps?

And I don't think I ever heard Riker making a noise that sounded anything like "EEEOOOO!" Maybe during those special nights with Troi...

I have a "special preview" picture of the upcoming TNG comics from an old STIV era comic. The E-D is even more disfigured in it. I'll see if I can dig it up.

We should have comic fuck-ups and oddities thread, because there's a ton of them.

Well that makes me glad I never got into comic books.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

I never got into comics for a reason that you can see here in the panel where Riker is commanding the saucer separation. Noone would hold their hands in the air screaming "Disengage saucer and stardrive sections of the Enterprise!" But it happens all the time in comics.

*strikes a pose* "Hand me the shaker full of salt for food seasoning!"

So, they all talk like Mojo Jojo in the comics?

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

I never got into TREK comic books for this very reason. Only in "modern" Trek comics are technical accuracy wrt starship designs the norm, and even THEN they're often given quite a bit of license. As an example of the older norms, check out this rendition of the Excelsior from the 80s comics:

Redjac!

Also there weren't a lot of shots of Excelsior available at first, so...

By far the Gold Key TOS comics in the late 60's were the worst.

The Enterprise was the size of a passenger plane, Uhura was frequently Caucasian and kirk had an afro at one point. Weird situations also arose. The message was pretty clear : DONT FUCK WITH KIRK

He beat up dinosaurs, mutants, fish, Klingons, tentacle monsters and women in these old ones.

In that second-to-last one, what's the explanation for Hitler's presence on the bridge?

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

He's Bill Cosby's roommate, obviously.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

You've lost me. Though, upon looking at it again, I find I must also wonder why Kirk is apparently being played by Harrison Ford. I guess, if anyone should be phasering Hitler, it should be Indiana Jones...

There's a fair amount of loincloth action going on in those covers. Did they hire a cover-art designer whose only experience was in Conan comics, and who couldn't do trousers?

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

I'm guessing those covers are from the Big Bag of Unlicensed Free Fantasy Artwork. Like covers rejected by Astounding Science Fiction or something.

Posted by Josh (Member # 1884) on :

I always thought this was interesting; A TOS workbee a decade before they were in the films

 -

Apparently Kirk had a magnesium spinal disc and his father also kicked Klingon ass.

 -

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

"Open the shuttle bay doors, please, Spock."

"Colonel Benjamin Kirk?" Posthumous? "Klingon repulsion??" Actually, 12 years old would be just about right for Kodos the Executioner.

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

This is great stuff! I had no idea these existed anywhere online. Loving the "secure seat belts" line, especially considering the decades of grief they'd recieve afterwards. It's good to know that SOMEONE thought of 'em...

Any more?

*I* got it. And more than that, is Kirk phasering him for not buckling up!?

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Ahh, yes, that little-known period when Starfleet officers wore backup Webley .455 revolvers on Sam browne belts. That one's going straight on the website!

Gaaah! I knew Spock thought mighty highly of himself, but that's a bit much!

Oddly enough, everyone is wearing rucksacks and raincoats too. Strange how this 1960s artistic liberty fills in an awful lot of the lack of foresight the original show.

Also, *I* got the Cosby & Hitler joke. Any WLIIA fan worth his salt would know that one!
