Spoilers!

According to this report, the Ventaxians are going to show up in the new season's second episode. The Ventaxians are the guys who were nutty about getting taken over by the hip & sexy Ardra in TNG "Devil's Due".

Anyone want to lay odds that they made a gaffe? The Ventaxians in "Devil's Due" had no bumpy heads; we've seen so relatively few non-bumpy races in ENT, so...

Mark

Heaven forbid they mess up such a famous species from such a quality episode.

I mean, seriously, the Ventaxians? I'd say "why bother bringing up such an obscure race if you aren't going to do it correctly", but I'll just leave it as "why?"

Enterprise has featured some neat makeup, but I don't think their elaborate/unelaborate alien ratio is much different than any previous show.

Digging up my (incredibly sad) list, the following aliens had little in the way of makeup or prosthetics:

Lorillians (the lady and her son in the pilot)
at least one of the species of monks in "Cold Front"
Valakians and the Menk
Coridanians
Tandarans
Risans, of course
the aliens from "Desert Crossing"
a bunch of background aliens from "Two Days and Two Nights," including Hoshi's 'friend'
the miners in "Marauders"
the species from Agaron that the Vulcans modified some agents to look like in "The Seventh"
Kriosians
the aliens who made up the Takret Militia in "The Catwalk"
Enolians, from "Canamar"

That's as far as my list goes, at the moment, but it seems clear that there isn't any great absence of more or less smooth-headed humanoid types in Enterprise. And two of those listed do happen to be from TNG, and are incredibly minor. (Well, actually, I don't think Risans with things stuck to their head appeared until DS9, did they? So maybe only one species from TNG.) I wouldn't say making the Ventaxians the subject of an episode is any less likely than the Kriosians being the subject of one.

Oh, wait, I forgot the dudes from "The Communicator," as well as those lizard people who were wearing masks in that one episode. Uh, "Civilization" maybe? I didn't get a chance to record that one for my (oh so nerdy and dumb) list-making enterprise. (PUN!)

Rick Berman knows he's fucking up the history, he wants you to tlk about it and hopefully watch Enterprise, which actually put me off my Trek.

If they can't take a joke fuck 'em.

Most controversial statement ever.

Yeah, I agree it's probably a gaffe. The producers probably didn't realize that they used the name before for a race in TNG. They could always respell it when the TV Guide plot synopsis is released. Or maybe the two different races share the same name but have no knowledge of each other. I guess we could also have the Expanse Ventaxians and the Ventaxians from Ventax II.

Phlox you give Rick Berman too much credit. I think that Rick Berman is blissfully ignorant of the history or knew it at one point and then totally forgot about it. He probably hasn't seen "Devil's Due" in twelve years and even then probably didn't give much attention to the planet and race name. Maybe he honestly thinks that Ventax and Ventaxian hasn't been used yet. It probably all starts to sound the same to him after a while.

Which is more evidence that they really need to hire a continuity supervisor for Enteprise who can point out these things for them. I seriously doubt that they even look at Startrek.com.

Hey but its easy to fix. Ven'Taxian. There, that was easy. [Wink]

Uh...except we've already had two instances of minor TNG species showing up in Enterprise, and another three or four minor original series species. Seems like a pattern to me.

Were they called Ventaxians in the Phase II script? Some dufusses are probably looking through old Phase II scripts for ideas.

His name's like my name! [Eek!]

"His name's like my name!"

Actually, your name is like his name.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Oooh, hang on. Things are suddenly a lot clearer. I was sure that Dr Phlox didn't used to act as if he was trying to win Mr Hyper ADD Twat Face of the year, and now I know why.

Happy.

Oh, we have a "Dr Phlox" and a "Dr. Phlox". Because we definitely need more Denobulans. Joy.

Indeed. Shame I didn't notice when I first joined.

Phase II? Uh, huh? (Unless "Devil's Due" was another recycle job, but I was sure they had burned through all of those during the second season writer's strike.)

Posted by Futurama Guy (Member # 968) on :

Actually it was a Phase II recycle; and so it goes:
#1) ST: The Motion Picture
#2) "The Child" - Season 2
#3) "Devil's Due" - Season 4

....Season 2 shortcuts, however, included only the one recycle, the clip show ("Shades of Grey") and 6 episodes less than what became the norm.

im always disappointed that i never got to read the original version where Kirk beats the shit out of Ardra and gets his shirt ripped... man those rewrites are a bitch

Posted by Guardian 2000 (Member # 743) on :

That would have to be after he nailed her. It's Kirk, after all . . . he'd be nailing somebody, and you know he'd do the god-chick.

If it's really supposed to be *the* Ventaxians, they will mess up history just another time and make the worst possible choice from a large pool of possibilities (it's only a name in the plot, but it means a lot for continuity).

It remains to be seen if they will look differently. Worse, the plot would make no sense, because the TNG Ventaxians were said to have lived in a peaceful agricultural society for 1000 years. They may have starships, but it isn't fitting to have a "small minority" of them raid Enterprise. Just as we wouldn't accept whining Klingons or greedy Vulcans.

"...or greedy Vulcans."

What, like Romulans, you mean?

Like the Cardassians were a peaceful loving society that made great architecture and were poor 40 years before TNG even though the military had been running a fairly facist regime for several hundred years?

Or Ferengi that aren't interested in money? Oh, wait, we've had that. How about Klingons who aren't obsessed by logic. No, wait, we've done that too. What about Klingons who don't want to be great warriors? Jem'Hadar who are individual, reasonable humanitarian (*cough*) thinkers? Individual Borg?

It's an aspect of Trek that is (possibly) necessary, but also (possibly) lazy: All Members Of Alien Races Act The Same. Why can't we have whining Klingons? Or greedy Romulans? Or Ventaxians who don't like living in a peaceful agricultural society?

Who said that line anyway? Was it a Starfleet member, or a Ventaxian? Because if it's the former, it could easily be misinformation, and the later, it could be propoganda.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

And yes, I meant to say "Vulcans who aren't obsessed with logic". Don't think that pointing that out makes you any sexier than me, because you aren't. Okay?

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Liam is 1,000 percent right.

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Negative 1000% percent!!!!!!!

Because I am sexier. You see.

You and 58 percent of America. B)

Sieggy does not agree.

Sieggy likes gay midgets. Count his opinion does not.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

How can you say that this is not sexy?

You were younger and less crimson then. It is disqualified!

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Why am I not allowed to be crimson?

That kid is one English looking kid.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

How would he look less English and more American?

Posted by Ultra Magnus (Member # 239) on :

Get a new face?

And read less.

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

And a sweater that isn't so ugly.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

It was 1983. Believe me, it could have been much worse.

I want that jumper in adult size.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

They did them in the Gap last Christmas: had a matching scarf that was much more popular; Kate wanted the scarf, but I could only get her the jumper. I'll try to find a photo.

Posted by Ultra Magnus (Member # 239) on :

Jumper.

This is like reading V for Vendetta again, but more boring.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I could post a picture of me and Lee if you'd like something sexier.

Posted by Cartmaniac (Member # 256) on :

But!

sexiness ratio Liam:Lee == brightness ratio Candle:Star

So.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I don't know. I'm looking particularly fine in it, whereas Lee looks tired, old and Welsh.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Er, Welsh?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Or Irish. DO NOT DOUBT ME!

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Whereas the reddish-haired kid named "Kavanagh" doesn't look Irish at all...
