I don't think we've seen any names for other NX-class ships (I believe it was mentioned that about half-a-dozen others were being built), but I think names to expect are the old Star Trek standbys: Hood, Defiant, Victory, Lexington, Yorktown, Excalibur, etcetra.

Given the projected timeline for the completion of NX-02 from "The Expanse", it's good money that we'll know the answer in time for the 3rd season finale, and not before.

This sounds like a fun competition: What (USS Name) and when (Season and episode) will the next NX class ship be named?

I guess USS Florida in episode 5 of season 3.

The Federation starship USS Buttcrack!

Did you drink one too many YooHoos?

Seriously, I think that the only fitting name should be...

Columbia.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Agreed, Kazeite.

Then NX-03 Challenger
NX-04 Atlantis
NX-05 Endeavour
NX-06 Buran

BTW - NASA is short one shuttle now - why don't they just buy Buran and give it a make-over - it could be done on Ricki Lake! [Smile]

I suspect that they might go with Yorktown, because of the history and small in-jokeness.

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Forget the Discovery? And I think I heard that the Buran is now a restaraunt in downtown Moscow...

Buran's fate.

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Roof collapse. Okay, NOT a restaraunt in downtown Moscow, then. Anybody have any idea what I'm thinking of?

You're not completely crazy, Omega. I believe it's the static test article that now sits in Gorky Park. It was converted into a space-themed cafe and/or amusment park attraction. Just do a search on Buran and Gorky Park and you'll find enough info.

Mayweather said there were four more NX class ships on the drawing boards, right? That would be 02, 03, 04, and 05.

NX-02 showing up just in time to pull Enterprise's arse out of the fire during the season 3 finale seems like a good bet. The season will go on just long enough for the ship to be built, tested, and warp its butt over to the Expanse.

And I'd say Columbia is solidly in the running for the name.

Jefferies NX-02
Season 3 finale

Mayweather: (...)There are three more NX-Class ships on the drawing boards.(...}

Oh, yes... I forgot about Matt Jefferies... But they already mentioned 'captain Jefferies'...

Endevour would be a more likely choice. Columbia and Discovery would be a little to soon...

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Did something happen to the Discovery while I wasn't looking?

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Didn't you hear? It got notified over subspace. Very messy. 8)

I'm predicting that we don't see it until at least the fourth season and we don't hear a word about it until the resolution to the "Xindi saga" --- that just sounds stupid.

I would say those continual names that have been forever thrown around will be in the running but higher contenders would be Columbia and Jefferies--- perhaps even crazily enough the Roddenberry might be a possibility, no other high profile ship that I can think of since his death.

Cochraine?

uh.. er... Challenger. Okay, I guess enough time's passed to forget.. humph.

"Cochrane".

But they already honored the shuttle Challenger with a starship with this name NCC-71099, Galaxy-class, in the Voyager episode "Timeless." Because it is the latest manned spacecraft loss, I bet that the NX-02 will be named Columbia, in honor of those who perished. I was just joking before about the name Yorktown.

I suspect they could do up Enterprise as a resque ship. It's smaller and heavier then the rest of the fleet, so it probably wouldn't be of much use for research or as a lifting body.

It would be cheaper and cause less effort expended to purchase a new Space Shuttle than to retrofit any of the existing non-space faring orbiters.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I'm worried now, because either Kosh is making the sort of appalling spelling mistake that someone his age really shouldn't, or "resque" is a word that I should know, but don't.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Oops - my bad - forgetting Discovery! I knew I was missing one - but I couldn't be arsed checking the web [Smile]

Enterprise as a Rescue ship - hmmm!

What about just as a people mover?

Why doesn't Russia just fix the Buran and have their own cash-cow for putting LARGE loads in orbit - I mean it can hold more than the US shuttles.

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

I think it was destroyed, no? And, for that matter, has a shuttle run ever turned a profit, and would it do so even if it could hold six times the cargo per run?

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

It could (maybe, kind of/sort of), if it flew as often as the original proposal claimed it would, but of course that proposal was an intentional pack of lies designed to save NASA from the fate of the Department of Horse Whip Standards.
