According to the AICN, the new SS Enterprise will be an 'inverted' USS Enterprise. This is a design that dates to the early days of Star Trek. This sketch can be found either in the Making of Star Trek or the Star Trek magazine. This will be the second occurence where the source material is drafted to form a 3D model.
I liked this design and hope that the final product is beautiful and graceful. And I think this reflects a growing awareness by the creators that in space, there is no up or down, left or right, back or front.
Anyhow, only time and patience will give us the first authenticated pictures of the next primary ship in Star Trek's history.

Strangely, it DOES coincide with earlier reports of it being Akira-esque.
I'll be happy if they listen to Jefferies advice: "Keep the important stuff inside". In other words, I want to see a smooth ship, without techy bits like the Voyager. I will settle with SOME functional techy bits resembling the Phoenix/Friendship One/S.S. Valiant ships.

What reports of it being Akira-esque? More than likely that's just some fans idea based on the fact Eaves is designing it. Much like some loser decided to take some fan-created images and slap "Copyright Paramount Pictures" on them. . .

The Akira thing is truly, truly bizarre, actually. This guy met Eaves at a convention and posted a full interview with him that seemed quite legit and posted it online. There was a statement by Eaves that said, on the subject of the ship that "fans of the Akira class will be in for a treat" or something like that. I saw that with my own eyes, and TrekToday reported the interview as containing this as well. But if you go to that interview now, that line has disappeared completely from it. I'm still scratching my head.

Er, how? Because the ship is "upside-down" compared to modern Starfleet vessels? The ship won't actually BE flying upside down, will it?
And TPTB know full well that space is 3d, but they don't want to show it. The human mind has trouble coping with 3 full dimensions (since up and down are very much secondary to the other two). Other sci-fi shows have, to varying degrees, played with 3 dimensions, but even B5 didn't have ships meeting each other on different axis.
