One thing that made me think... the Xindi are basically defending themselves. Granted, the DID attack Earth first, but when Archer gets to them, he'll probobly decide that humanity and Xindi have a mutual enemy.

Who's to say, that the Xindi arn't being set-up? ONE probe makes a token attack that does enough damage to get attention, but isn't anything, compaired to what would happen if the probe just slammed into Earth at half lightspeed. THEN, it conveintly crashes and the pilot's body is recovered. they must be moronic aliens if they are going to allow us to get ahold that that much evidance. What about that future-tech? IF the Xindi where warned about Humanity and they sent that probe for a weapons test, why would it have future-tech? unless that was a remote control and the pilot was already dead?

Just as the Suliban of the present are actually picked-upon good guys, I get the Xindi are being manipulated.

Does this really need a separate thread?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Separate from what? It's the only non-tech thread about "The Expanse" so far.

I think you may be right.

I really don't see Earth obliterating a planet, in 400 years time or not.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Of course, an attack in the 2550s would seemingly be coming from the Federation, not from just humans, but I doubt this was meant as a clue, Earth being a synonym for the UFP far too often in the past.

Talking about future Federations, why haven't Braxton and Co intervened in this obvious temporal stuff yet?

(Well obviously not Braxton himself, because he's in prison, but his successors)

Posted by TheWoozle (Member # 929) on :

That's my point exactly. you would think that the opposition of the faction that sent the Xindi on the war path would have just simply stopped them. By giving all this information to the 22nd century Starfleet, theyre altering their own history. Earth is making discoveries in advance of what they would have normally done.

They killed Duras soley because they had come home to re-arm. If Earth hadn't been attacked, Archer wouldn't have been close enough for help to save him and he certainly wouldn't have blown that Klingon ship up (okay, Duras MAY have escaped). That MUST have some affect on the future, even if only to put the family on the warpath.

Certainly, the 7-million dead will make a change in history, not to mention the technology salvaged from that probe.

What will Archer NOT be doing, that he would have been if not going to the delphic expanse?

This all adds up to something that the temporal ranger-doods should be avoiding just as much as Earth being destroyed.

As usual, I imagine, it will all be overlooked.

I like all these ideas, but do you really, REALLY think Berman and Braga gave this blatant retooling of Enterprise this much thought?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

They didint, no.
But that's not to say that the smart little birdies that give us stuff only a true nut would notice are'nt whispering episode-saving ideas in their ears whenever they can. [Wink]
You didint really think B&B said: "Y'know what might be fun? Have a model of Nomad on Mayweather's desk. Everyone will get that joke." did you? [Big Grin]

Too true. And the inclusion of the old TOS starfleet logo (as seen in Court Martial amongst other places) As the Starfleet logo on top of Starfleet head-quarters!

Braxton & Co. have only ever been involved in cleaning up the messes from THEIR time. I believe that whatever front of this cold war is in the 26th century is the responsibility of THAT time to deal with - that, or the other fronts in the war, which is pretty much what we're seeing. QED.

Didn't Braxton in the Aeon come and insist that Voyager be taken back to its proper time and place merely because they'd detected an anomaly on their temporal scanners, or whatever? He didn't have any idea that a version of him, or in fact anyone from his timeframe, was involved, it was just "there's an anomaly, let's fix it".

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

"temporal scanner" = wristwatch.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Incidently, I'm not at all sure Duras is dead. His ship was destroyed, sure, but the forward section seemed to be more or less intact. Depends on how good damage control on a Klingon ship is, I guess.

Posted by Futurama Guy (Member # 968) on :

^But the thing is even IF he did live who would have gone back to save him? Archer and Co. didn't even scan for lifesigns or anything else that might suggest he lived. The other Klingon ships probably shipped for home, and really, do we want this Duras to be the next Khan, Weyoun or Seska of Enterprise?

Also, I wouldn't put it past anyone that Earth was set up in the eyes of the Xindi. We've seen it once already in the Season 1 finale, where the Enterprise was set up, by the Suliban, for destroying that colony; just as we saw in the pilot ep. where the Suliban set up the Klingons for a civil war. One faction framing another...wooo B&B...obviously there are numerous factions in this feud and IF Earth was set up for presumably attacking the Xindi it really isnt anything too original for this series or this theory. I'm sure this (framing) will be the reason why Earth and Romulus go to war...which will really disappoint me, if it happens. [Frown]

Posted by Cartmaniac (Member # 256) on :

The Romulans are, I think, territorial enough as to need little... incentive to start a war.

That is, IF the conflict is at all going to be dealt with, considering B's recent PUSHING BOUNDARIES!! quote.

Posted by Futurama Guy (Member # 968) on :

Actually I am sorry for all those that complained about the Romulans and the episode "Minefield". I would much rather see more Romulans than more Klingons (and yes, I am sounding like a broken record here). But it seems the Romulans could EASILY fit into the 'temporal cold war' theme and really, for being one of the oldest Star Trek enemies, they certainly have not been developed nearly to the degree that the Klingons, Borg, Cardassians or Bajorans have. Doing something WITH the Romulans would be NEW and pushing the boundaries moreso than suffocating us with more Borg or Klingons, OR making up NEW races altogether.

Posted by TheWoozle (Member # 929) on :

That brings up an interesting point. In TNG, the Cardasians have history. At what point will we be introduced to them...

I want to see the Delphic expanse on that Trek Atlas, heh.

I wonder if Nemesis harmed the future of Romulan-themed stories. That would be too bad. It barely even had Romulans in it. Alas.

Exactly. Braxton & Co. are already busy with Admiral Janeway and the Vaadwaur War, who are being manipulated by Future Guy. Who is actually Past Guy, if you believe Braxton. [Big Grin]

On a more serious note, it's an obvious solution considering temporal mechanics to let more advanced people in the future take care of the problem. In Temporal Investigations, procrastination need never go out of style!

RE: "Wanna see the Expanse on the maps"

It is there already. Or did you miss the black background color on the Alpha and Beta quadrant maps? That's the Expanse, just below the galactic plane!

Seriously, not only would this 2000 ly phenomenon fill the entire map there, it would also fill the entire Earth sky. Seven weeks of travel time from Earth to the Expanse should be in the 100 ly ballpark, if eight weeks at comparable speeds got NX-01 back from where she was originally. And 2000 ly at 100 ly distance would cover basically *everything* in the sky.

No. Because it's not their job to put in tiny little easter eggs that roughly 0.000001% of their viewing audience would get. And seriously, you think that's an episode saving idea? Plot, drama, characterisation, giving Hoshi something to fucking do, those are episode saving ideas.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

But they DO add to the creative process and help to make the show entertaining.

Something sorely lacking in the previous series.
I'll take Mayweather's Nomad model "in joke" over any/all the Voyager two hour "events" any fucking day! [Razz]

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

No, they don't add to the creative process. They are an excuse for hardcore fans to wank while the rest of the viewing audience either don't notice or don't care.

wha....?

whaddya mean, wank?...

I wasn't...

No, I was just watching the showl and happened to.. um...

uh.. nevermind.

I just watched it last night. I don't think it will hurt as much as open it up as little more, if they get to do another movie.

Braga said that they didn't really want to do Romulans, but he didn't rule it out completely for Enterprise.

He as sure as fuck better include them.... [Mad]

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Throw in a Reman slave or two while you're at it!

And Orions!
And more Tholians (we never did understand where they fit in exactly)!
And Bolians!
And a pony!
And Talarians!
And a Racecar!

I think that one thing they're trying to say (but NOT actually saying it) is that empires come and go. By the 23rd adn 24th centuries, some of these empries have lost ground. I think of the Vulcans like the British. When the Americans started exploring, the Sun Never Sets On The British Empire and today, they're just an island nation with quaint politics and America's strongest Ally. By the 25th Century, Vulcan is pretty isolationist.

I wanna see races seen in TMP and TVH and TUC. There's a wealth of alien ideas there.

I'm waiting on a visit to Delta! [Smile]

Oh thanks a lot! [Smile]

Anyway, we may be an "island nation" with "quaint politics", but we still have the world's fifth largest economy and the best-trained armed forces in the world. [Smile]

Fourth largest, isn't it? Also we still have Gibralter and the Falklands and several other small islands!!! The Empire lives!!!

Posted by Phoenix (Member # 966) on :

I think the US, Japan, Germany and France are bigger, but I could be wrong.

And technically the Empire never existed in the first place, as the King/Queen was only Emperor/Empress of India. [Smile]
