Okay, with starships with crews between 500-1000 people, there's got to be a pretty big division of different types of personnel.

I mean, the ship can't just be filled with engineers, security officers, and medical people. What about all those other people on the bridge and in red (command) uniforms? What exactly do they do?

Does anybody remember those older books that actually divided up ships crews into all the various departments and subdepartments?

I'm wondering if anyone can list any additional starship positions, departments, etc. asside from the common ones such as operations, security, etc.

I'm basically trying to find out what all those other command officers do.

Well, the only real main divisions are command, operations, and science, as evidenced by uniform colors. The only real subdivisions are going to be in ops (engineers, security, other ship's operations) and science (medical, astrometrics, xenobiology, and a lot of others). Command is, for the most part, just that. IMO, the helm officers really should wear gold uniforms, but someone didn't know what they were doing from the time of TOS...

There was the father of one of those children in 'when the bough breaks' who was an oceanographer?? or something.

humm. Picard and Riker both held helm positions earlier in their careers, so there maybe something to it afterall.

The subdivisions of the Command division are particularly unsatisfying. There must be more to it than senior command dtaff and helmsmen! Granted I think we see far fewer red-shirted people these day, but even so. . .

We see less red-shirted people these days because people are getting smarter! They don't want to die!

Woah there, Fabby, get a grip. The traditional redshirts now wear gold, and they still die aplenty. I'm sure you'll all agree that most casualties that have happened in recent years have been members of the Ops division.

First Contact? Loads of engineers and security. We one or two assimiliatees in red and blue, but that's all.

Voyager? Everyone I an think of was in gold. I belive the pair who the Doc locks the door on on deck Five in "Year of Hell" were a red and a blue, but again that's all.

I could go on. . .

Like I said, the helms(wo)men should really wear gold (or red in TOS), but someone wasn't thinking...
