As we probably know, according to the Fact Files, the USS Thunderchild is NCC-65549, and some other ship is NCC-63549. Now, why would they do this? Well, as it turns out, they looked in the encyclopedia. One of the diagrams of the Thunderchild does in fact show that number. Of course, the FF people apparently decided to ignore the other diagram, and the text. And they didn't notice that there were other diagrams with incorrect numbers, like the Yeager's.

I'm willing to bet there's a really interesting story behind that Niagara, too.
