If the Oly is actually in service in the regular Star Trek timeline (as the Okudas would have us believe, and the registry would support), then why haven't we seen any of the damn things? I like the Olympic class a lot, and they have a perfectly good model siting around somewhere gathering dust(unless they let the guy who used to be in charge of movinging the Ambassador handle it), while ancient designs like the miranda are still in use and Sterbach and Co. are turning out freaky kitbashes to take up space behind DS9.
I suppose of course that everyone else besides the Okudas assume that the ship does not exist (yet).

I think it all comes down to computer graphics. While there's an Olympic class model, there isn't an Olympic class CGI model. Hence, no onscreen appearences.

The Olympic is a medical vessel and it is likely we will see them during the war with the dominion especially at the frontlines.

I believe the Olympic model is actually owned by a guy at ILM, and he only lent it to Star Trek for "All Good Things...", so Paramount may not even have to model at their disposal.

Or there's just no need to shoot one. No place for it in Voyager with the ship being out of Federation space and all.

Well I feel such a ship would have been perfect in and around DS9 or starbase 375 during the dommie war... maybe not when DS9 was about to fall, but when it was a Federation stronghold again, yes.

Another one for the "Things they should have done on DS9"-list.

They should have re-used some BoBW-designs!! Cheyennes, New Orleaners, OLYMPICS, AMBASSADORS!
Instead, they threw together a Yeager-class and used Miranda's, Excelsiors and wrong CGI's of the Nebula . The only thing good were the Akira ships..

BTW, did we ever see Steamrunners, Norways or Sabres on DS9?

Sabres were visible in SoA, and no Norways have been seen outside of FC, due to lack of model detail.

How hard is it to ad some model detail? At least there is an ACTUAL model to be worked on.

Sometimes I feel instead of all these new ships, they should be resurrecting some of the older ships.

Did they still use any model shots in the later years of DS9, or was it all CGI?
I ask because if they were still using models I would have to agree with Andrew that should've showed a New Orleans or Cheyenne in one of the big DS9 battle scenes. Yes, I have seen pics of the models and know that they weren't very well detailed, but they could have been used in much the same way they were in BOBW (all shot up in the background).

The Centaur Type, Shelley Class, and Yeager class are all physical models. I don't have any direct knowledge of this, but why else would they make a new class out of existing AMT model parts. If they were computer modeling those ships, they could've created whole new designs. I really don't see why they didn't bash a Galaxy class to make a Freedom or a New Orleans.

That raises another question. Were there any Nebula Classes seen in the big battle sequences as DS9 finished up? I don't recall any.

Though those Nebulas were all CGI and improperly done. 1) There were windows on the saucer near the edge where there shouldn't be. 2) The wedge between the pylons and the nacelles are the same size as those on Galaxys when on the Nebulas, they should be bigger. 3) It actually looks like they used a Galaxy saucer in making the Nebula saucer. They covered up the area where the Galaxy saucer impulse engines are. The hull color is different. 4) There doesn't appear to be any phaser strips along the aft dorsal saucer.

Can we accept this is another variant on the Nebula class or is it just a mistake that is meant to be ignored.

Is that the Nebula CGI shown at the end of Generations?

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Wasn't that a model of the Nebula at the end of Generations, I remember them sprucing her up a la the E-D for the movie - i.e. the six foot model of the Enterprise was stripped down and repainted, I think they did the same for the Farragut.

The Farragut was indeed a physical model. They added thrusters to the weapons pod and changed the locations of a few decals and that was it.

Hello, i'm new around here and would like to
say hi to everyone. I had a question about
the post saying the Norway CGI didn't have
enough detail so it hasn't appeared outside
of FC. Okay, to my understanding, when a
model is built for television, it doesn't have the same level of detail as a model
built for a motion picture. So, for that reason, the TV models aren't used in movies
(at least not without being refurbished or
upgraded first). So if the Norway was built
for a movie, shouldn't it have more than enough detail for the smaller TV screen(even
if it wasn't AS detailed as the other FC models)? Also, i could swear I did see a
Norway in SoA;I'll have to watch the tape
again to be sure.

As far as Steamrunners and Sabres, both of them were seen in "Tears of the Prophets" and
the final season episode where the Breen attack Earth and retake the Chintoka system

Well we could always say that the Norway mesh was lost and they never bothered to make a new one. Though I have a similar question about the Sovereign-class, if there's been a CGI model made why not put it in DS9?

Well, if lack of detail was the reason, it may not be that they couldn't use it, but that they just didn't want to. If none of the people working on DS9 liked the ship, they wouldn't have used it. Just guessing, though...

I think we know why we didn't see any of the Enterprise-E's sisters, the model is reserved for the movie til the big wigs say so.

About the Olypmic class...

Isn't it logical that they wouldn't be part of the main fleets during the battle scenes in DS9? I mean, they'd be sitting ducks. They're slow, lightly armed, and the only thing they have going for them is perhaps decent shielding.

Logic also dictates that these medical ships would not lower their shields to evacuate casualties. This has something to do with the phaser fire and torpedoes all over da place

So...they'd be used AFTER the battle scenes we have seen...so that's why we didn't see them when we were seeing dozens of different ships at once.

No excuse for not having them at DS9 during the war though, during shots of the station. Cheap blighters prolly didn't even think of making another model or CGI of the Olympic...

Even if the Olympics were well armed and well shielded, it would still be unwise to set them at the frontlines. Think of all those injured people on board. If an Olympic got hit, dying and nearly-dying people fly all over the place because of the impact.

Ya, but as I said, Floating around DS9 would have been the perfect place. I'm sure the infirmary on DS9 wasn't equipped to handle ALL those casualties.

Posted by Timo (Member # 245) on :

But what WAS DS9 equipped to handle? It wasn't a real starbase capable of supporting Federation starships - I bet there wasn't even an antimatter generator aboard originally. It was a Cardassian mining and intimidation station originally, and probably relatively useless as anything except a floating cargo port and entertainment center during the first two seasons. The upgrades in the third season turned it into a gunnery outpost of some sort. But we never heard if there were upgrades to turn it into a fleet supply station.

Perhaps the starships in the Bajoran system did not use DS9 as their main supply depot at all. Perhaps only Martok's office was really located there, and all the other fleet activity was centered around Bajor? Then the hospital ships would be there, too, and not near DS9.

Well, it's bigger than the average fed-starbase, like 375, and it's got 16 docking ports and lots of elbowroom.
