I know we all keep starship lists, but I was just curious as to what format everyone uses (Excel, Access, FilePro, etc.) Mine is a simple Word document. I was wondering if anyone stores their ship list in a database. I have been thinking of transferring mine to one.

Started off in a simple TXT format 13 years ago, switched to a nice little DB program called Nutshell in 1994, jumped up to the far-easier Lotus Approach 97 in 1997. I can sort by name, hull number or class. I don't bother with mission type...at least, not until I nail down all the designs.

On my site, I exported by class & posted as simple TXT documents for ease of reading. MAN, was that bitch to format some of the larger classes--there's 5000 Oberths & like 3200 Excelsiors in there.

That reminds me...maybe I should start working on the Corona-class ships again....

I keep it in an Excel spreadsheet, but I only keep one list because, as Shik said, it can be sorted by any of the columns...

My starship list (canon, book, and LUG RPG), is currently on a Canon Starwriter 70 Word processor, though I have been considering redoing it in Word, at least so that I could post it when people ask for book ships.

I have a giant list that's 142 pages in Word 2000. It includes all canon ships, LUG, FASA, SotSF, SFD, SFP, etc, etc. The actual format of the list goes like this:

Class Name
Ship Name--Registry Number--Other (Class Ship, date launched, proposed, etc)

The list originally was sent to me sometime back and I have since tweaked it a little and I add ships when I read a novel with a ship not in the list or if new ships appear on the show.

I use a Works database with these field headings:-

DES (U.S.S. or S.S)
NAME
PREFIX (NCC, NAR, NX, etc)
REG (1701, 7100, 74656 etc)
SUB (A,B,C,D,E)
CLASS
COMMENTS (Lost at the battle of Wolf 359, etc)
STATUS (OPERATIONAL, DESTROYED, MISSING etc)
SEEN (Yes, No - reffering to whether or not the
ship has been sighted or just mentioned)

its quite detailed, but that just makes it easier to find ships or groups of ships. I generally arrange the whole list by reg number then by sub reg.

Oh man I haven't updated my ship list in quite some time. I hate it when real life gets in the way.

My set up is as follows-I may have some of the order wrong or missing since I'm doing this from memory at work. If we didn't know a value the line would not be liste.

Class Name: (Cannon name if known, if not then I'll list it by type from the first ship we've seen of that class ex-Quark's Treasure Type Shuttle Pod, or in a streach by the race ex-Gorn Ship in Arena)
AKA: (alternate class names used in fandom)
Known Users: (fleets, raiders, merchants etc.)
First Seen/Mentioned: (episode and/or book)
Known Crew Complement:
Known Passengers:
Known Speeds: (TOS measurement or TNG Measurement or other)
Known Weapons:
Known Equipment: (cloaking devices, EMH, etc.)
Other Notes: (Including behind the scenes information, who made the models etc.)

Ship Name/Registry: (Including alt names/registries)
Current/Last Known Status: (active, destroyed, etc.)
First Seen/Mentioned:
Known Commanding Officers:
Known Crewmembers:
Special Equipment:
Other Notes:

I've put this together in word so its pretty big. I have placed quite a bit of behind the scenes information in the entries. I'm going to have to dig mine out and get it updated.

My main list, which I use the most, is the one with class names listed alphabetically (ships of unknown class listed alphabetically by ship name at end of list). Within a class, say, Ambassador, all ships are listed in order of their registry number. Prototype ship always listed first, even if we've never seen it. The rest of it is set up like this (going horizontally from left to right)

Ship Name
Registry Number
Class
Status (i.e. Destroyed, lost)
Captains (in order of command)
Episode Seen

You spelled Relativity wrong.

Also missing unnamed ships with registry numbers NCC-1665, NCC-1667, NCC-1685, NCC-1705, and NCC-1708. All from "Court Martial" I believe

Why do you have USS Nash listed as NCC-20108? It's hull was clearly marked as saying NCC-2010-B.

Zhukov spelled wrong.

Yamaguchi spelled wrong.

The registry number of the SS Raven is NAR-32450, not NAR-34521.

Al-Batani is spelled wrong (it should have the "-")

USS Biko should be Oberth class, the ship was clearly seen on screen (you also misspelled Olympic class)

Appalachia is spelled wrong

USS Raman should be NCC-29847, not NCC-59983. Someone clearly proved this in the past, I forget who.

Concorde is spelled wrong (missing an "e")

Where the heck did you get USS Santa Maria NCC-71564, Galaxy class from?! I never saw any ship of the sort in "Operation: Return".

Unnamed ship NCC-71325 missing. Registry on shuttle on "Caretaker"

You have USS Danube listed twice, first as NCC-72003, next as NX-72003.

Orinocco spelled wrong.

Shanandoah spelled wrong.

Steamrunner Class is spelled wrong.

Where did you find that the USS Gettysburg is Miranda class?

Other ships that you're missing that don't have a registry number or class are as follows:
SS Dierdre
USS Galice
USS Hispanola
USS Kai Winn (iffy...)
SS Kobayashi Maru
SS Oregon
USS Sarek
USS Truman

I think that's all that I can critique!

The USS Santa Maria NCC-71564 may be the same ship from the DS9 calender. This Galaxy Class starship featured in a photo spread had the registry of NCC-70564 and had two words in its name. Did the writer of the list contact the makers of the calender and get the name and what episode the ship appeared in?

After much revision, I have divided my list into the following tiers. The tiers are based on several criteria.

2161-2880
Ships of the Starfleet

Tier 1
These ships have existed as real or virtual models at scale or life-size and have appeared in the episodes and films. Ships seen in computer displays are excluded from this tier.

Thanks guys for all the help and excuse me while I sew my nuts back on.

In responce to some of the queries,

The Santa Maria is the ship seen in ships of the line, I got the name by enhancing and tracing the contors of a scan.

you can find it here:- http://www.stormloader.com/reverendtrig/images/name_reconstruc.jpg

It's by no means conclusive but it seamed to fit, as for the reg, I knocked it up so that it doesn't predate the galaxy.

Again with the Nash I have been maybe a little to liberal with the reg and pretended that the 'B' was an 8 because it made more sense.

as far as all those spelling mistakes I'll be correcting them soon.

by the way where did these come from?

As for the Santa Maria, 1) What picture in the calender is that from, and 2) I don't see ANYWHERE how you got the word U.S.S. SANTA MARIA out of that jumbled mess.

The picture comes from the 'ships of the line calender' it is a shot of a galaxy's upper port bow, it was posted on this forum by NEMISIS back in july.

As for how I got santa maria, well like I said it's very subjective, I did a lot of head scratching, trying to work out what letters fitted in to that tangled mess, I actually came up with SOULA MARIA first, that just didn't sound right but santa maria seemed to fit. It's a little hard to see as the lettering is small and curves away from you.

The only Galaxies in the calender are the one on the cover, which is the USS Challenger NCC-71099 (with Enterprise put on the torpedo launcher), and the Utopia Planitia scene, which has the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, and two Galaxies that you can't possibly get the name or number from.

Me: "Why don't you live in Hong Kong?"
Rachel Roberts: "Hong Kong? Nah. Oh, but we can live in China! Yeah, China has great Chinese food!"

Hey, two different calendars involved here. It's not the Ships of the Line Calendar. It's the DS9 calendar.

Groundskeeper Willy: Yeah, I bought your mutt - and I 'ate 'im! [Bart gasps.] I 'ate 'is little face, I 'ate 'is guts, and I 'ate the way 'e's always barkin'! So I gave 'im to the church.
Bart: Ohhh, I see... you HATE him, so you gave him to the church.
Groundskeeper Willy: Aye. I also 'ate the mess he left on me rug. [Bart stares.] Ya heard me!

Natchez has also been confused with Manson. I'm not sure about what it says in close caption though. If that part was not in the close caption, it's still up for debate. And Manson doesn't have to be named after Charles or Marilyn Manson. And I certainly hope not.

Neither is in the closed captioning...

Well the Manson might be after Shirley Manson

Back to where this topic was originally started for:
My ship list was a simple ASCII file, which I maintained with MS-DOS Edit. I had three lists, sorted by class, registry, and name.
However, a couple of months ago, I've converted it into HTML, complete with pictures and class biographies with the purpose of publishing it on the Web. That hasn't happened (yet), but I use it now as My Official Starship List (R).
