Has anyone done any DVD caps of the Wolf 369 wreckage scenes!?! I was looking at Copernicus Ship Yards site and noticed that there are lots of caps but they all seem to be from VHS video.

So - anyone done nice DVD caps yet?

Andrew

"Woah, NO! Beta!"

Yes, this matter was reasonably well touted a few weeks ago.

http://www.trekmania.net/the_fleet/utopia/screencap_analyses3.htm

or

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/wolf359.htm

being both of the Wolf 359 research team, the same images are used on both sites, with are own analyses though...

Wolf 369? Was that one of the battles during the Dominion War? Or one of the Klingon campaigns?

But get 'em while you can... I'm not sure how much longer I'll keep all of them up.

The other ones I capped from the BTS stuff (of the Kyushu and the Firebrand/Princeton) are available at either Trekmania or EAS.

Bia-tch! [Wink]

It was a fleet of 50 starships destroyed by a way-ward Pakled ship! [Wink] It had aquired a stable Omega Particle and tried to use it to replicate a icoberry souffl - which failed to rise - resulting in a catastrophic subspace fracture. There was icoberry souffl EVERYWHERE! [Smile]

Hey, Red---

Just WHO, might I ask, is the owner of the elusive Buran model pic? What are his/her reasons for not wanting it released? Surely there can't still be thoughts of an Okuda-authored Wolf 359 book at this point...

Posted by The Red Admiral (Member # 602) on :

I don't know the owner personally. But you know the familiar picture of the Buran with the fake colours and blurry quality? well it had to be purposely distorted, because Bernd, at the time lacked permission to use the real thing on his, and the other sites in the Wolf 359 research Team.

The guy took it from the infamous slide-show, there are others, such as the shot of the Springfield on the mug, which he did release, but he won't let us show the Challenger. Don't ask me why, it's bewildering. I think Mark (Delgado) or Bernd, were going to try and contact him again to persuade him.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

I just can't fathom what the motivation would be for keeping it under wraps for this long. Hasn't it been like, you know, a decade since Okuda's slide show?

Dumb questions:

-Why did he release the Chekov-on-mug pic?
-Are those butt-ugly color-modified views of the Melbourne model his as well?

-MMoM [Wink]

OK, before this gets any more out of hand, I'm going to tell all of you THE FACTS.

1. The blurry photos of the Melbourne, the Chekov on the coffee cup, and the Buran all came from Gary Perry. He just took pictures of the actual slideshow presentation. Yes, that's what the original photos looked like, don't ask me why. We had Gary's permission to show them on Bernd's site, which was done a few years ago.

2. Another fellow by the name of Paul Frenczli also took pretty much the same photos of both the Chekov and the Buran when he was at the same convention. Not long after Gary sent Bernd his pics, Paul sent Chris Spinnler his Chekov pic. However, his photos were of much better quality than Gary's for some reason. If anyone remembered Gary's false colored shot of the Chekov, and compared it to Paul's pic of the same shot, you could clearly see the improvement. Paul allowed Chris to post his Chekov pic on his site.

3. A few months later, Paul sent Chris a better-quality pic of the Buran, like he did with the Chekov. For some reason though, Paul did not give Chris permission to show the pic on the site, as he did with the Chekov. Or maybe Chris asked for permission, & Paul just never got back to him. I don't know. I was sent the pic as well for some reason. I thought it was because Paul decided to let people see the pic by email instead of on a website where everyone could see it. But later I would find out that that wasn't the case.

4. Years go by, and things are forgotten.

5. Once the BoBW DVD comes out & Starship Millenium makes new screencaps, we all get to see the wrecked ships clearer than ever. It's at this time that I find out that no one else had ever seen the Buran pic Paul gave us. Chris tries to contact Paul to see if he can get the guy's permission to show the pic, but AFAIK, he hasn't gotten a response.

6. The clearer pic of the Buran is quite small, and really doesn't show any more detail than the false-color pic did. The most clear thing you can see is that the secondary hull isn't the angular piece that we all thought it was. I really don't know how to describe it; honestly, to me it looks like a flat pillow with a row of lights running down the side. I made a quick pencil drawing of the ship once. I'll upload it here on my next post. As for showing the actual photo, let me email Chris to see where he's gotten with contacting Paul.

Here's my (very quick & rough) drawing of the Buran:

http://lobotomy.pleh.net/~flareupload/uploads/341/challenger.jpg

I think I made the saucer a bit thicker than it really is, but it does come from the two Ent-D saucer tops left over from the Cheyenne model. I drew the lower pylon based on what I saw in the pic (it's too small to make out any good detail). The top of the saucer had two phaser strips, not just one. I couldn't see enough of the underneath of the saucer to see if it was the same way. I also couldn't see the registry because of the angle of the model.

Thank you for the facts, Dukkie. As I'm sure it did to many, this whole thing came as a big surprise to me. I hope you can get the pic "released" at some point in the near future.

^ Probably those grainy top and bottom shots of the battle damaged model. They do look purposely mucked up, you'd have to photocopy them quite a few times before they got like that. They're on EAS in the Wolf 359 pages.

Regarding the Buran pic... Did they guy ever say not to post the picture? If not, and if you can't contact him (or he just doesn't respond), I wouldn't think you would be under any obligation to keep the picture secret, even if he does speak up after the fact and say you should have.

Maybe the owner is worried about Paramount Studios suing them for copyright infringement?

I agree. And honestly, I wouldn't have a problem emailing the pic to the select few of us here, with the provision that we at least honor Paul's request and not show the pic on our respective websites, or distribute it further than our own PC's. However, I'd like to contact Chris first to see if he's had any more luck trying to contact Paul.

Id love to see this pic if you would not mind me having alook (i dont have a web site to post it and neiter would i ever with out the permission of the author)

Please please i have waited forever just to see all that we have now and not ever get the chance to see the Challenger Class.

Yeah, if anyone can send me the pic, I'd keep it secret too. The only thing I have on my "website" are my "so-called kitbashed ships" made from side drawings. I rarely, if at all, update anything there. If anyone wants to send me the pic, my email address is in my profile.

OK, maybe that wasn't such a good idea. How about this? Before I get inundated with everyone's email address, perhaps it would be better to just upload the pic to a server and give out a secret link to us Flare-ites. But please keep in mind that I want to still make sure Chris hasn't had any more luck contacting Mr. Frenczli. So, please just hold your collective horses until then [Wink]

OK, I don't mean to be rude here, but one of the posters at Flare (not me) is currently being pestered by several people emailing him to see the Buran pic. Whoever you are, you need to fucking stop this now. If you've bothered to read this thread in full, you should know that everyone here will most likely eventually see the pic when I upload it to Flare, presumably very soon. To those few people who are annoying the above poster, your impatience is exactly what I was hoping to avoid. So cease.

Posted by Dr. Phlox (Member # 878) on :

Well it's not me. I only have two e-mail addresses, both are in my profile. Perhaps these people would stop sending e-mails if you threaten not to show the photo because of them. [Wink]

Sweat it not, Dukhat - I don't think it was any of the chaps here that were responsible. There could well be lurkers about...

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

And they should remain lurkers, even off the forum!

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

Oh, OK. In that case, I apologize if I inadvertently offended any Flare-ites. However, don't put down the lurkers too fast. Everyone here was a lurker at some point. There's nothing wrong with lurking. But no matter who you are, just realize that bugging people will get you nowhere.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

I'm confused. What's the point in showing it to people and saying "well, I'm not supposed to show this, but, as long as you promise not to show anyone else..."? Couldn't those people proceed to find a bunch of others and say "well, I'm not supposed to show this, but, as long as you promise not to show anyone else..."? And then those people do the same, and those people do the same, and so on? If you want it to stay secret, don't show it to anyone. And, if you're going to show it off, just go all the way and don't be nonsensical about it.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

I sort of agree. It *is* pretty pointless to pass it around "secretly" or to a select group of individuals. I don't like this approach much at all. But, if it's the only way people can get to see the pic...I'm all over it. [Razz]

But the way I see it is that there's no real reason why you shouldn't post the pic on Ex-Astris, where it belongs, and leave it there until (and if, which is a pretty big if) someone complains. I agree that if this individual never specifically said not to "distribute" the image (man, that sounds like such a serious word, "distribute," when all you're doing is putting it up on a page with dozens of other similar pics for interested parties to glance at) then you should not feel under obligation to keep it under wraps. Especially if this was all years ago, as it seems to be.

Just my two cents' worth. I'll shut up now.

-MMoM [Big Grin]

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

TSN: I didn't think I was being "nonsensical," as you say. In lieu of Paul giving us permission to distribute his pic freely, I was going to upload it to Flare for us to view it because I trust the people here enough to think that they wouldn't do what you described. Or am I wrong? I just want to do the right thing. What do you think? Should I just not show the pic at all?

You do realize any joe schmoe can come to this board who isn't even registered, read the thread where you post the picture, and take it, right? Do you trust those nameless persons?

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Why are we taking things in this direction? I don't see the need to concern ourselves with things like that. I can't imagine any reasonable person getting ANGRY over the fact that some PEOPLE on the INTERNET saw his PICTURE OF THE BURAN. It's such a non-issue it's almost silly. I am all for etiquette, but I really don't think that "permission" to post the pic should be looked at as something so sacred as to be required in cases such as these. There's no law (aside from the copyright stuff that no one including Paramount really cares about anyway) preventing you from doing whatever you like with that pic that's in your possession. Don't make it an issue of "right" and "wrong." Save such moral deliberations for larger, more deserving things.

Damn, and I was going to shut up too...I'm sorry Dukkie.

-MMoM [Big Grin]

I had planned on PM'ing people with the link.

But you know what? I'm already sick of this bullshit. I'm just going to ask Bernd post the pic on his site, as someone suggested.

This is what I get for trying to be fair.

Shit. We did it again. [Frown]

Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :

I think the point's been made many times over that the only way to be fair is to make it available for anyone and everyone who wants to see it. What you're doing appears to be the only sensical response.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

"In lieu of Paul giving us permission to distribute his pic freely, I was going to upload it to Flare for us to view it because I trust the people here enough to think that they wouldn't do what you described."

But, it's the same thing that you were going to do. So, basically, you were going to show it to your friends whom you trust, w/o permission. But you expect them not to show it to their friends whom they trust, w/o permission. You'd be saying "okay, I'm distributing the picture now, but don't any of you guys do the same". That's the point I was trying to make.

"I can't imagine any reasonable person getting ANGRY over the fact that some PEOPLE on the INTERNET saw his PICTURE OF THE BURAN."

You're expecting to find reasonable people on the Internet? People on the Internet who go to Trek conventions, no less? I don't predict a 100% success rate in that endeavor...

TSN & The_Tom: I hate to admit it...but you're right. It should be all or nothing. I suppose I was a little presumptuous to try to pass the pic off to people here that I figured I could trust. I guess I just got annoyed when people started bugging Red for the pic. I'll talk to Bernd about trying to show the pic on Ex Astris Scientia. Honestly, it's nothing spectacular. You're all going to be disappointed.

However, let's be realistic here. If, at the start of all this, I had said, "Yes, I have a pic of the Buran, but no, I've decided that I'm not going to show it to anyone because it's not my pic and I don't have permission from the owner," I guarantee that a ton of people would start crying like little girls about how I'm being so unfair by not "sharing my information" with the rest of us.

Anyway, it's all said & done. I'll see what I can do on my end. For now, just keep looking at my drawing [Wink]

Is there any MAJOR problem with showing this picture? I mean - Mike Okuda didn't want some of his pictures out in the public domain because he was planning on doing a book - but what about this guy? Does he have any connection to Trek? Apart from POSSIBLY taking the picture - physically what 'sway' does he have over the pic? Clearly his non-response after so long means he's probably forgotten about it and is probably withholding that to make himself feel a little bigger than usual??

Just guessing wildly here! [Smile]

Dukie... WHAT!?!

It probably sounds like I'm whining to see it - I'm not. All I'm saying is... Mike Okuda had good reason to retain his photos - he wanted to make a new book (possibly). Who is this guy with the photo - i.e. is he in the same position as Mike in that he needs the photo for financial gain or what-ever?

Not ASKING for the frigging thing just wanting to know the STORY behind the picture. Talk about things getting blown out of proportion. Blown out of Proportion like the Defiant! [Smile]

For what it's worth, I only use these pics to guide me in AutoCAD. And they are immensely helpful in getting the proportions and details right.

The false-colour yellow-background images are just awful, but even they were better than nothing.
