And here, ladies and gents, is the best of the bunch! [Wink]

NOTE: There are some minor Nemesis spoilers in the very last column of the last paragraph on the second page, and an even more minor one in the last sentence inside the box entitled "Romulan BIRD-OF-PREY: 2152" on the third page. So, as long as you gloss over those little bits, you shouldn't have any problem.

[from the February 2003 issue of Star Trek: The Magazine, pp. 74-81]

For some reason, this CGI model looks really...well...real to me. I'm not sure whether it shows as well in the scans, but every time I glance at the mag pages I could swear for an instant that it's a physical model! [Eek!]

Enjoy!

"You'll know it's a Romulan ship by [the bird painted on it]"

Boo! As I recall, the episode seemed to go out of its way not to show the undersides of the ships. At the time I thought "Aha! They are waiting to reveal that feature in some dramatic shot in the future."

Ahhhhhhh could have warned us there were spoilers for Nemesis in the text!! Gah.

We don't get to see the bloody movie until February now.

You were reading the text? [Razz]

But...but...but...there were pretty pictures to be glued to. [Razz]

I have to admit, it's a beautiful ship. But it seems to much of a 24th century ship design than 22nd.

God DAMN IT! [Mad]

I was having a really bad time w/this yesterday. I forgot to mention that about the Sternbach article too.

Anyhow, there's nothing but the merest of plot details in the thing. (The name of the villian and what happens to him at the end of the film---which is hardly a big surprise in an action/adventure film.)

Thanks a lot for the pics, Mim!
(and for the Klingon ones too)

What?! Please tell me you're not serious.

Do we know how big these BoP are? Going by the windows, they seem to have a similar deck count to the TOS Bird so they might be about the same size.

Anyway, thanks for the pics, Mim. Most appreciated.

Tis true Dax. Pushed from Jan 16th to Feb 6th.

You know that Romulan ship would have been a Beauty in TNG era. Why couldn't they have made it more clunky? We know, we know - CGI - easier to make curvey things look realistic.

That sux! Thanks for the information though, Andrew.

Regarding the ENT BoP design, other than the overtly Jem'Hadarish nacelles, I really like it. It strikes me as the way the TOS BoP should have always been and, to be honest, I don't think it'd be good as a TNG era ship -- the Romulans had clearly moved on from that style by that time.

Here are the cleaned up scans (bottom of the page):

The cgi they used for the pic of the TOS bop in that article is a nasty one. They didn't even bother with putting the plasma launcher on it.

Anyway in case anyone is interested I'm doing a lower poly version of the Ent BOP for use in the Bridge Commander game. As it sit's it is a bit over 2400 polies.

Yeah, that picture of the TOS ship was awful, 100% awful. Too bad it was a screenshot.

I think he meant the one from the Sternbach article, which was a CGI pic. And it was a little...unflattering.

Maybe someone could slightly redesign the TOS BoP to have more surface detail. That would clean up the mess at least a little bit.

And mess with perfection?!

Yes I was refering to the cgi pic in the article. I'll stick with the "unflattering" description as kids may be reading.

I hope no one got paid for it however.

Yes, I agree. Though doing the same treatment to the Bird of Prey, like they did to the E-nil and D-7 in DS9 would be nice.

So, now that we've got reliable diagrams to get the ship's proportions, can anyone who's got a bit more of a practiced eye make some calculations on the pre-BOP's size?

I may be remembering wrong, but I seem to recall that the last shot with the pre-BOP behind the ship was after dialogue had said that it was closing to 500 meters -- which is basically 2 ship lengths for the NX-01.

Based on that, it looks like the pre-BOP might be approximately 1.5 times the length of the NX-01.

I always thought around 300 meters. So iguess that sounds right.

I've done a bit of a structural analysis and I've come to ~200m as the length of the ENT BoP.

Does anyone here have contact with Eaves? He'd be the one to get a definitive design size from.

I would definately like that 200 meter measurement better.

Why so much bigger than the TOS version? (68m according to the Starship Spotter and 131m according to Bernd.) [Confused]

300 meters would make it bigger than the TOS BoP for sure.

I pretty much agree with Bernd on the size of the TOS BoP (140m according to my measurements of the Encyclopedia charts) and, at 200m, the main body of the ENT BoP would be the same size. Notice how the nacelles are much longer and the pylons swing further fwd on the ENT Bird -- the result being an overall longer ship, yet the volume would be almost the same.
