- Timestamp is December 27th, 2153. About two weeks since last episode.

- "Starfleet training" again, no Academy.

- The MACOs want the regulars to take up some tactical training. Reed doesn't particularly likes it.

- The MACOs have never fought aliens before joining NX-01. They only had 'simulated combat on Earth's surface'.

- The MACO girl is called Amanda Cole, a Corporal. I think we hadn't seen here before.

- Hayes is directly under Reed's command, and addresses him as "Sir".

- That little badge on his right shoulder is definitely the TOS "Command" star.

- Mayweather has almost three entire lines!

- Big Giant Freaky Anomalies. It's all gone gooey!

- The grappler is used. I guess it's the first time we see it without the sensor package.

- The alien looks like a mix between Suliban and Tosk.

- First correct use of the word 'upload' in Star Trek. Yay!

- The MACO training is obviously not "Starfleet regulation". Our poor brightly colored crew gets kicked hard by MACO fists. They seem to either train in an empty cargo bay or have their own gym. Or they emptied the old gym of the 'toys'.

More later.

- Despite that the MACOs have never fought anything off Earth, they have designed some sort of targeting training system on Jupiter Station.

- They let the Starfleeters train with the MACO rifles.

- The alien is a transdimensional being. He's capable of walking through stuff, a la Daniels trick and the interphase cloak. His last words: "When the Xindi destroy Earth, my people will prevail". So now.. transdimensionals are involved in the Temporal War too...

- Errr... I guess this episode has the dubious honor of being the first time regulars had sex with eachother. But the scene leading up to it wasn't nearly as weird as I feared for.

Data and Yar.

Sisko and alternate Dax.

Worf and Dax.

Paris and Janeway.

Paris and Torres.

Riker and Troi.

Yes. But we didn't actually see Worf's ass... Not that I'm complaining.

The lack of military experience really suggests that Earth has been pretty peaceful for a while. This is,what, about a century after WW III?

Then again, those MACOs don't look one hundred years old [Smile]

You forgot Ezri and Bashir ... Odo and Kira ... Riker and Ro ... if we want to count "irregulars", let's not forget Rom and Leeta ... Garak and Ziyal ...

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

Oh, you also forgot Worf and Troi ... (that might be more of an 'implied' thing) ...

I'm guessing that Harry's talking about regulars in THIS series.

Um, so why is it a "dubious" honor?

From a technical makeup POV, I was very pleased to see that both Reed and Hayes has bruised and swelled considerably the day after the fight.
This may well mark the first time we've seen two Enterprise crewmen really kick each other's asses.

Good to see Mayweather can kick butt.

One thing: what happened to the MACO actor that was in Crusade?

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

Odd point: Archer notes that MACO training and technology are 3 years *ahead* of Starfleet.

And I thought we had seen before that Mayweather can kick butt. Or at least hold his own pretty well. Can't remember specifically where, though.

In that last scene with Archer dressing down Reed and Hayes, is it just me, or did Reed look like he was about to burst out laughing?

B.J.

I expected the two of them to start laughting afterwards as well.

That happened to me and a freind back in sixth grade...although he only lost a tooth and I got a black eye.
Made us pals though, and I bet it does here as well.
Trek has a tradition of sorts of making characters that dont initially like each other into pals:
McCoy and Spock, Bashier and O'Brien, Mayweather and his imaginary freind "Mr Quiet"....

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

I really did look like Reed (or more likely Dominic Keating) was about to burst into laughing when Archer yelled at him [Smile]

Looks like you guys have already covered the tech stuff, (I'm really glad that they're being consistent about the Academy not being founded until 2161) so I'Il just say that I found the T'Pol/Trip subplot to be very unbelievable and silly, but I absolutely loved everything else. Especially the Reed/Hayes subplot. And it's interersting that the main plot brings a new layer to the Temporal Cold War.

Oh, and I would have titled the thread "Flirtatious Tech..." [Razz]

what was the thing they fished up with the grappler?

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

In this episode, they pulled out that alien's pod from the anomaly-of-the-week. But we DID see it used in, for example, "Broken Bow" and "Breaking the Ice."

Oh, and nobody mentioned yet another example of someone who can walk through walls yet can't fall through the floor. [Wink]

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

I just remembered that they said the alien's pod was made of the same material as the Expanse's spheres. So they're probably saying his race created the Expanse.

After T'Pol dismissed her encounter with Trip as intellectual curiosity, it looked like he was put off a bit by that. I suppose that clears the way for a Trip/Amanda relationship.

Oh, and did anyone catch the preview for next week?
Possible $$$$$

It looks to me like they're recycling a Voyager plot, with the crew in hibernation in a dangerous part of space, and the only one left awake (Phlox) is going mad.

Finally! Decent martial arts techniques instead of the sissy hand-to-hand/claw/tentacle combat Trek has always done! Pity they were only sparring, though.

Well... as to what the alien said "When the Xindi destroy Earth, my people will win." I get the feeling that that this transdimensional might not be a transdimensional--- we are only certain that he was phase shifting [as someone else pointed out phase shifting is something that Daniel did well]. I think this alien might well be a future alien, the one that is helping the Xindi perhaps? Maybe Earth has nothing to do with the future destruction of the Xindi and that was just propaganda?

Was anyone able to compare the alien to known species? Romulans, etc... I wasn't paying that much attention to the episode.

As for the advanced state of the MACOs... remember that they are like modern day special forces units, and they are often times more advanced than your average GI unit in technology as well as skills & tactics.

I LOVED the coy look on T'Pol's face, half hidden behind the mug.. very french.

While you all where watching T'Pol strip, you probobly missed his reaction.. he goggled and looked down and down and.. down.. in complete disbelief.

Was it just me, or did T'Pol seem like she was marking her territory?

Except that the alien himself claimed he was transdimensional. Of course, being from (a possible) future or another dimension might be equally (un)feasable in this whole war.

He looked like a mix between Suliban and Tosk, but nothing we've seen before. But I did kinda expect him to turn into Silik...

And another MACO trivia: they have 'lunar training'.

And the whole morning-after talk of T'Pol was probably her just freaking out after what happened. I think the whole thing was pretty well done, and not quite as silly as it could have been. I especially liked the fact that T'Pol confessed the Sim-incident.

Yeah, but that alien also said he was a prisoner and was being used as a guinea pig against his will. Somehow I have the feeling that the only true thing he told us was his last line, "...my people win."

Here's a weird idea... what if that guy were really a Suliban, and for whatever reason had desiccated and so didn't quite look like the ones we know and love? ...Hmm, except Phlox got a really good chance to scan him and get information, so that would've been discovered if it were true. Never mind. [Wink]

Well, I got to find out Hayes' first initial, and saw three MACOs I hadn't seen before. Plus there might be the holy grail there, a decent side-on shot of the MACO rifle. So there are now 28 MACOs on board. Bit of a reset there on the shag-buddy thing, anyone want to take bets on how long it'll be before the subject arises again? And no, we hadn't seen Cole before, and I doubt we'll see her again. Which is a pity, because seeing Trip trying to deal with the whole "Well, I snogged you, yes, but I shagged her, but that's not going to happen again, so what now?" thing could be a lot of fun. . .

"Oh, and nobody mentioned yet another example of someone who can walk through walls yet can't fall through the floor."

Well, it was apparently selective, considering that he was able to kneel on top of the warp core, and then reach his hand through the very same piece of metal that was supporting his knees.

Actually, make that 4 MACOs. Just finished my vidcapping. I'm really looking forward to that long, long hiatus coming up around Easter - about a month with no eps. Bliss. 8)

Shit. 130 caps I just took. But I feel I'd be remiss if I didn't let you all have this one:

Uh.. Yeah. [Smile]

I've been extremely busy recently and will not be able to contribute my usual exhaustive reviews. But...

-Did anyone notice how decidedly UN-military the Starfleeters were made to appear? In training, the MACOs were all in fatigues, while the Enterprise crew were in civvie workout apparel. And then Cole, when off duty, was in civvie workout apparel?

-And what was with that giant workout mirror, hm?

One did almost expect that huge fight between Hayes and Reed to end with them kissing passionately. . .

But the alien was a liar... why trust him? I think transdimensional was a cover. I think he was an alien from the future, one of the bad guys like Future Guy [or maybe the other group that is a mutual enemy of both Future Guy and Daniel].

I could be wrong, he could be a transdimensional alien... but I still think he's got more to do with the Temporal War than as really let on.

BTW, Lee, Cole was a Corporal (Phlox called her that).

Hey, or he could be one of the faceless alien rebels that is fighting the alien colonists ready to infect everyone with a virus that turns them into aliens which is being made by a secret government conspiracy.

Oh wait, wrong strangely payoff-less (yes thats a word) TV show [Smile]

Ok, they show this type of scene for the straight male views and lesbians but when it comes to show something like two men holding hands in Ten Foward, the Trek management team goes nuts and has it removed.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Yes. Keep up.

Besides, how's it for lesbians and not male gays? You get a nice view of Tucker's manly chest, after all.

And are you saying that a scene of two men holding hands in Ten Forward would get you going? You require a low level of catalyst, don'tcha?

$$$ "The Council" Spoilers $$$

http://www.trektoday.com/news/140204_01.shtml

The alien in this episode is apparently of the Sphere Builder species. They are capable of observing the different timelines, and thus presumably a quite powerful faction in the Temporal War.
