Whoa. I sure didn't know that the Excelsior model was both in scale and shot simultaneously with the spacedock model! Very cool.
That, and seeing the grand old lady herself, the Enterprise-D, in new angles is always a treat. I really miss her.
And are those pieces of a Borg sphere that I spy?

Most likely they are the pieces of the Borg Sphere... although it's kinda odd that they are next to the scale model of the Stellar Cartography set for Generations.

I saw the 12 foot model of the saucer for the crash sequence. It is about as wide as the length of my Corolla... I think. Although I'm shocked that the shuttles they used in the evacuation sequence is a mix of CGI, matte painting, and modelwork.

Yeah, that's a new (or seriously modified) Spacedock model for Generations: note the lack of cables between the sections (I always thought those looked silly in TMP).

That is weird. All I can think of is that they were doing touch-up work to the Cartography mock-up (after FC was made) for some reason (possibly to photograph for The Art Of Star Trek book) when that pic was taken.
Damn cool that the Borg Sphere breaks down into pieces like that so they did not (totaly) toast the model for the explosion scene.

Very first picture. The grey wedges at the bottom of the table look to be segments of the Borg sphere. There's also a thin sliver and a photo of the sphere next to the model maker in the red shirt.

I've seen a pic of the assembled saucer stood on edge with a woman standing in front of it.

Well there seem to be more pictures of the Sphere model in construction on the FC DVD, as well as a couple of ship concepts drawings we haven't seen before(although one of them was in the painting in the movie sketchbook).
I saw the Borg Sphere model myself a couple of years ago at an exhibition in London, I'm fairly sure it was the one used in the movie since it was so detailed, and all the other models there were from the shows. The one they blew up in the movie was probably just CGI, or a duplicate.

That or the blown up sphere was hollow, just like the Cube when it was blown up.
As for the other Starfleet vessels... the prototype StReamrunner Class looks interesting and that USS Criterion reminds me of a bloated Nova Class for some reason.

I see more of a New Orleans inspiration than a Zandura variant (though it obviously has the same nacelles).
