Just finished a Ready Room, and I'm still working on my Bridge (of my own design), but this was a side project to do the Enterprise-D Main Engineering. This is part of it, the other side is a little bare.

But I'd really like your help to point me towards a source to gather more Okudagrams, and if possible, a nice resolution Galaxy Class MSD. I'd also request some good reference photos of the Ent-D Engineering, and the warp core....

Cheers

That redshirt could stand to cut back on the desserts...

Wow! That's cool. What program are you using?

Posted by The Red Admiral (Member # 602) on :

Lol, yes the redshirt is a bit of a fat ass...

I'm using Lightwave, BTW

That's very impressive, but God would those fluorescents give me a headache. . . 8)

Lava lamps have been known to help. [Smile]

Spiffy work, man! Now, make all my bridge sketches in Lightwave, and I'll be a happy boy. [Razz]

Very very impressive, Red Admiral.

BTW, are those Defiant MSDs to either side of the pool table?

Posted by The Red Admiral (Member # 602) on :

Good spot, they are Defiant MSDs, hence the reason why I'm seeking out more suitable Okudagrams and MSDs, these were the only ones I had to work with, so they just had do right now.

Mark, I like the bridges a lot, really imaginative work. I currently have a Bridge of my own design in progress. It's quite unconventional, with a number of surprises. It's not at the render stage just yet...

I'm very impressed.. the lighting could of course be toned down a bit.. but other than that it seems right on

Can't say that I noticed the ass thing.

Lightwave? Where can I get that?

Unless you've got a few grand lying around, I'd settle for a warez copy *cough cough*.

I'm less worried about the bulge in the back of his pants, and more about the one in the front. Surely the uniforms weren't that tight...

The redshirt came from a "gifted" family I bet... Anyway this is a cool render but it'a a bit bright. Give it the lighting scheme from Generations. Oh, I had the chance to access a collection of LCARS pics so let me know what exactly are you looking for.

Looks great, Red. No I mean, Red Admiral. You sickos. Anyway, did you model the bumps around the door or are those a bump map? I can't quite tell. Maybe that's the point! Also some strange shadows from in the light panels. No idea how to fix that short of raydiosity rendering/adding more lights. Does LightWave let you do non-point/area lights? Waitaminute. Are those just glows on the panels?

The only textures used in the scene are the carpet layers and the computer LCARS displays...

TSN - they orignally had no uniforms, they were nude! Or virtually so, muscular like an action figure. I had to bulk them up to make them appear as though they had clothes, and then colour them accordingly. Anyway I amended Mr Redshirt to look like me, hence the well endowed bulge.... lol, no seriously, I didn't realise it showed that much.

Michael, I'd love any LCARS stuff you've got. The bigger the resolution the better. Got any Galacy Class MSDs amongst them?

The lighting was a nightmare Balaam. This image was render number 28, after experiemtning with so many different lighting types/configurations that I lost count. This was the only one that offered adequate intensity and ambience at the same time, and also handled even shadows. In fact I had to have the figures abstain from casting shadows, because they were huge otherwise, spread out across the wall, looking quite bizarre, as if they were in a small cave huddled round a fire.

I ran into that problem doing some CG set design stuff for my show. It hurts. Of course my show is called "Our Place In The Shadows" so I didn't mind too much, but I did wind up using quite a few more light sources than I thought I'd need.
Sometimes pointing a series of wide angle kliegs up at where the source is coming from and then upping the reflectivity and the glow (to cover up the annoying mirrorlike reflections the object would otherwise have) of the object the light is supposed to be coming from will diffuse the lights a bit more. Sometimes that only makes it worse.
Lighting is such a science of itself. And it's irritating because when it's done right, you just don't notice. As opposed to when you do it wrong (see some of the links in
this
thread) and everyone notices.
Anyway, it's looking good sir! I look forward to seeing more.

Lightwave - that's only for a Mac right? What can I get for a PC - preferably free or if not free, then cheap?

Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :

LightWave is neither free, nor cheap, nor Mac-only.

Posted by Michael_T (Member # 144) on :

Red, I know I have a color pic of the Galaxy Class MSD. Not sure how high a quality it is though.

Yeah I know it ain't free or cheap - unless you get a Warez copy - sadly it's too big for me to download in 2 hours (the warex copy that is). It's not Mac-only? Oh, must have mis-read the text.

So is anyone going to answer my question about where I can get a copy of a graphics program like Lightwave but is pretty cheap but can produce the same quality stuff?

There is a reason why Lightwave and 3D Studio cost more than your average family saloon, you know [Wink]

Luckily, I've been able to get my hands on both - I prefer LW however, because of its superior rendering engine.

I'm no Mac user by the way, I've got a proper computer.

Michael, yes please do send me whatever you've got of the Galaxy Class MSD. It needn't be high res, it's not going to be seen in any great detail in the scene. Can you post it here? Or perhaps you could send it via email.

akb1979, are you on a 2 hour isp limit? In that case use Getright or another download manager, in many cases you'll be able to resume the downloads later after disconnecting.

Email me at my domain, ie *anything*@trekmania.net

cheers

Red, I'm sending you pieces of my LCARS collection since I have ADSL only. Let me know if you want more.

ADSL only, I'm still 56K!

Thanks for the pics, but I could do with that Galaxy MSD if you get the chance... cheers

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

ADSL? What's that? I only have 56k too.

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - a lot faster alternative to 56K. Can be expensive, but Cable broadband has it beat, at least right now in the UK.

Red, didn't I send you the Enterprise-D MSD already?

Posted by The Red Admiral (Member # 602) on :

Ah yeh sorry man! My inbox is so stuffed I overlooked it. Thanks heaps, also many thanks for the Engineering 'pool table' LCARS display. I'll incorporate those into the next render.

Cheers!

You're welcome Red, and let me know if you need anymore. I have a few LCARS button panels left around here. Oh, DSL service from Pacific Bell in Los Angeles costs $49.95 a month... how much is it over there? And before I forget, I got most of the LCARS panels from LCARSCOM.net or Data's Domain so don't forget to credit the sites.
