This is my latest ship design. First proper ship I've drawn in a long while. It is basically a mix between the Daedalus, NX-01. The cargo pod is supposed to represent an older version of FJ's container and the nacelles have details similar to Enterprise. The nacelle pylons are probably going to have the same kind of plasma superchargers as the NX-01.

That's really good. Bravo! [Eek!]

I like it too! Good job.

Edit: I took a second look and now wonder where the impulse thrusters could be. You'd have to put them at the extreme top or bottom of the primary hull, since those are the only parts that are not blocked from the rear by the cargo container.

Or maybe on the nacelle pylons?

Nice job! [Smile]

:| Hadn't even thought about impulse. Big oops!

Errr... Nacelle pylons with impulse engines in the 22nd century doesn't appeal to me. The pylons are already packed, and impulse engines are probably bigger than in the 24th century. BTW, where are the impulse engines on the Daedalus?

Stick the impulse engines on the top of the sphere, why they stuck the bridges of these vessals, exposed on the top of the saucer sections never made any sense to me anyway. I mean why would you put the bridge crew exposed to enemy fire, radiation and the chance that something would hit them, when all of their senses to the outside world come in artificially anyway. It is not like they are looking out the front window to navigate. Would make more sense to have the bridge in the centre of the ship protected. Especially in a ship this old, their radiation protection would be even less than TOS era, so the bridge crew would need the added protection surrounding them.

If the sphere is an ellipsoid (wider than tall), the impulse engines may be on either side of it. You could incorporate them into the nacelle pylons, or put the thruster above or below them.

Impulse thrusters are always a big problem when designing tugs. I've even seen some designs with "thrust tunnels" running the length of the cargo modules. Anyways, I think putting them on thickened nacelle pylons makes the most sense. If you put them at the top of the sphere, you'd probably need to mirror them below to prevent rotation (if you care about such things). If you put them on the far outboard part of the sphere, you'd be routing the power conduits through lots of habitable hull space. Anyway, you should do a top view and see if your nacelle are out far enough to permit thrusters on the supports or whether they'd need to go elsewhere, like on the edge of the sphere/ellipsoid.

This is what I came up with. Note that the top view is not completely refined yet. The nacelle indent is probably visible from the top, and it hasn't got any windows yet.

That should work. I wonder how close something can be to an impulse thruster and not get damaged. You'll probably want to leave at least as much space between the thruster and the cargo cylinder as between the thruster and the nacelle. Also remember that your ship is now prevented from towing anything wider than those cylinders. Moving the thrusters and the nacelles further outboard might give you more flexibility.

You could try just having one impulse thruster on each pylon to give yourself a little space...or turn the double thruster 90 degrees so they are stacked vertically with the pylon in the middle...or you could just make the pylons telescopic.
