Here's some updates. Still a bit to do, such as further detail to the ventral side, plus I've yet to model the deflector dish. But she's coming along.

Something is wrong with ths damned computer monitor. Everything's so damned DARK!

(I've noticed this before, I just haven't bitched about it until now. It's not your picture.)

And YES, brightness is on maximum!

Well, rather than turn this into a joke about your way of seeing things solely in terms of black and white, I'll just ask if you have a contrast setting on the monitor. 8)

The images look really dark on my computer too. It might be Mark's fault. [Wink]

Nice design! I've seen the preliminary models at the ASDB, but these are the first full-detail images I've seen of your latest version.

I'm not sure if I like the way the nacelle pylons are arranged, though. I know you're going for something similar to the Excelsior layout, but the pylons don't look right when they're upside-down like that.

It is a bit dark, but I can see fine though. Seriously if it's too dark on your monitor then its the first sign that your monitor will burn out. It happened to mine, where at first everything was dark, then it took five minutes to even turn on, then when it was on, no picture.

Nice, Red.

that is a frickin' sweet ship.

I APPROVE!

END TRANSMISSION.

Dont get me wrong, your model is excellent as usual, its just that design is a bit strange. I dont like it. But good work all the same.

Me no like overall design, either. Kudos to mad modeling skillz, though.

Posted by Magenta Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I dig the overall design except the fact that the nacelle pylons bend downward. I think I might like it better if the nacelles were stuck at the end of horizontal pylons, Raven-style.

Excellent modeling work, though.

i think the ship is great just as it is. don't listen to those tards telling you to change it.

no wonder you call yourself "magenta".

Posted by Magenta Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I have no idea what that means...

Posted by Prismatic EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :

neither do i.

Magenta is a colour, is it not?

Posted by Prismatic EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :

yes, it is.

I understand that with any design there's going to be those that like, and favour your choices, and those that don't. So it's fair enough. I went for sunken nacelles on this design because I prefered them, maybe for diversity's sake. They were turned upwards in the very fist study model I made, but at the ASDB, my colleagues told me that it looked too similar to the Excelsior, and it would be better to change it somehow to set the two apart. So this was the solution.

Perhaps yes, the lighting is a bit dark, but there's other lighter renders available that of which links to are provided (eg: http://www.trekmania.net/art/hokviews2.jpg)

i think the ship looks extremely sweet.

I think the nacelles look fine pointing downwards, but I don't like the pylons. I think they stick out like a sore thumb with those sharp angles in contrast to the rather curved exterior in general.

Posted by Prismatic EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :

i think that the pylons fit the ships era very well.

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

That's the problem -- it might fit the era (Excelsior and Ambassador, particularly), but they still look awkward and gaudy.

Perhaps a pylon arrangement that's derived from the Centaur Class, which is probably a contemporary? It certainly doesn't have to be a sweeping, flared design like the Sovereign, but some kind of smoother arrangement would make it look a whole lot better.

IMO, of course. [Wink]

So what are the blue squares around the bridge complex?
Lifeboats ot just design elements acrried over from the excelsior?

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

I believe I read an old tech publication that pointed them out as sensor palettes on the Excelsior - or at least the first incarnation of the Excelsior, where they were irregular shapes that were near-flush with the hull. The ST6 version of the model had more regular shapes. Anyway, I'd assume something similar here.

Wasn't the Trieste a Hokule'a Class ship?

Data: "Too small; too slow"

To put the statement into context...Too slow to catch up with a Galaxy-Class starship and too small to stand a chance of disabling her.

It dosen't have to be an Oberth in order to be an inferior vessel. (in it's twilight years anyway)

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Yes it does!! Didn't you hear about the Oberth Class fleet that was lost when Starfleet sent it to combat an uprising by the Amusment Park Planet!?! [Smile]

This design is fantastic!! Don't change it!! [Smile] I don't think the angular nacelles look too bad; perhaps a little off but nothing that needs changing IMHO.

Just a thought mark, but have you ever tried putting self illumination on any of your ships?
 -

I think it'd look nice.

Posted by The Red Admiral (Member # 602) on :

Lol, well yes, some do, as in this old render http://www.trekmania.net/art/hokulea_new03.jpg . But I guess that detail inexplicably escaped me this time.

And thanks Wraith. As for the 'blue squares' as seen on the Excelsior, they could well be lifeboats, as was my assuption with this ship.

The Trieste BTW was a Merced Class, the Hokule'a Class ship you're referring to was the Tripoli.

You're welcome [Smile] I've always liked this design.

Hey Mark... any chance you could do a five-view of the Hokule'a? Or at the very least a side view? I e-mailed you a couple of months ago about getting an updated image to put in my starship comparison chart (including ASDB ships) but never heard back.

Thanks in advance. And it's lookin' good! [Cool]

Yeh no problem, sorry I forgot I about that:

http://www.trekmania.net/temp/hokuleaside.jpg

Is this okay? I didn't render with high shadows, and I upped the ambient light levels too, as it would probably be more appropriate for this purpose. Looking at the chart though I've got a bunch of ships I've done in 3D that you could fit on there as well. Ones of reasonable quality that I expect would qualify include: Daeadlus, Federation, Ptolemy, Saladin/Hermes, Constitution, Miranda, Oberth, Constellation, Merced, Soyuz, Springfield, Cheyenne, New Orleans, Niagara, Freedom, Nebula variants, Challenger and Norway. Let me know and I can do similar side views.

Put an ovoid saucer section on it and you have the early Voyager concept - which I reckon would have been great to see in First Contact or DS9
