Well... here she is. I put the last touches on her last night. The scans aren't super... but they're pretty good. I tried to keep the small one above small enough to avoid stretching your screens.... and below are some details and larger scans.

Beware... uber files below... around a minute on a 56K:

A large view of the drawing:

A detail shot:

Another detail shot:

And one more detail:

What do you think? This being the first time I've really done anything in this technique, I'm curious what the overall impression is. You guys think it came off successfully? I've still got some kinks to work out in the technique... and next time 'round, I think I'd like to try drawing on vellum as opposed to bristol board. It might stay a little brighter.

Wow, that's impressive! Even though I've seen most of it with your WIP drawings, it's still pretty nice to see finished. Congratulations! [Smile]

Very nice, especially the texture on the port bow.
What's the function of the "tail"?

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

Balance.

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

COUNTERbalance. [Wink]

Mark <---It would not be so agile...

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

I meant visual balance. Does "balance" actually exist in space?

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I'm assuming the tail is for shuttle and cargo space. I have a dedicated station on the bridge for cargo/shuttle ops. That feature of the ship comes directly from the mesh in the game, but I think I actually shortened it a little from the length it was.

I really like it alot, but you should add something to the dead space at the bottom right corner to complete the "Z" dynamic in your drawing.
The way the eye follows the piece the last thing they currently see is that empty space.
I'm not bagging on ya at all: I really like the technique you added in both the aztec pattern and in the commander's face (in particular), I just think you could add something in that spot to bring the eye's focus back up to the upper right to complete the circle.
mabye something less than subtle like the Starfleet Delta pointing up or a ship's logo...
Just my two cents. [Big Grin]

You should get yourself over to Cafepress (www.cafepress.com), set up a shop, and sell posters of this thing. They print up posters and shirts (etc.) when someone orders. The seller (you) doesn't bear any of the cost. I had some big 2 x 3 foot posters made, and they turned out very nice. They also have 16 x 20-inch posters From the response here, I'm sure many would want to buy posters of your artwork.

^I'd buy one.

Fantastic work!

Just a thought: How about making the secondary hull detachable? The saucer/spine/nacelles unit would look quite fine even without it. Only that a solution for the nav deflector would be required.

Posted by Timo (Member # 245) on :

A cute idea, but what would be the role of the detached section (even assuming a different deflector arrangement that stays with the mothership)? It's got cabin windows but not much other detail. A cargo pod with bunking for the cargomaster?

The Aegian as it stands already is as small as a Nova. I'm sure she could use all the interior space she can get...

I will look at cafepress later today. It sounds interesting. Thanks for the tip.

As far as detachability goes: yah... the ship is pretty small. I don't think detachability is warranted. Besides, I was trying to stick pretty closely with the ship from the game and I never heard anything about seperation cabability. But hey.. there are plenty of drawings of the Ent-D out there that don't indicate it can seperate... so maybe the Aegian can too....

I had thought about adding something to that corner... but I oculdn't think of what would be good without looking like I was just trying to stick something in there. I thought about the UFP logo... but I don't know... I guess I can always stick somethign down there if I think of something good and can muster up the energy to go back and do it [Smile] I'm really quite lazy, you know.

How about the ubiqutes Aegian Class Development patch? It'd balance out the picture and it would fit directly above the words Aegian Class

OK... I'm setting up my store at CafePress, but they appear to be pretty strict about copyright stuff... Since this design is taken straight from the game, I'm thinking there might be a problem here... what do you guys think?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Aside from the name of the class, I think you're okay for copyright purposes.
If they are really that touchy I think they'd take more issue with the Starfleet uniform and insignia. [Wink]

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Well, that would be Paramount. The makers of the game might have a problem with the ship though.

If that guy can do it, I don't see why you can't.

No offence intended, but did you set the prices? They seem to be rather expensive...

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I didn't know what to charge. They probably are high. I'll edit later.

Cafepress probably wouldn't allow you to take a Trek publicity photo or the words "Star Trek" and put it on a shirt or poster. However, since this is your own artwork (albeit based on a design that's not yours) it is probably okay. One of my posters has a small Connie on it that I drew myself. It wasn't a problem. I also know of cafepress stores for Starfleet chapters that use images of ships from games and series (http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=ussnebula http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=ussmcauliffe http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=ussmir http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=ussreaent). Anyway, except for final packing and shipping, the entire process is automated and unobserved by humans. I think it will be ok.

NIce pic.
I don't know what's worse: that they named a ship "Christa Mcallufe" or that the ship's an Oberth class (and we all know their apperance to explosion ratio!). [Wink]

The Cafepress pricing system allows you to set the sale price anywhere above the base price, which goes to Cafepress. You are then allowed to keep anything above the base price. Since I was not out to make a profit, I set all my prices exactly at the base price, so everything goes to Cafepress. Since the base price of the large poster is 15.99, you're making a profit of $12 each.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Yep. [Smile]

I'll lower them all on Moday when I have more time if you guys wanna snag any of them. I'm not really out to make a profit on them either but I figured a little windfall wouldn't hurt anything [Smile]

sorry... double post...

Wow! Thanks, Aban. It turned out great, and I can even buy a poster now if I want. Really fantastic work. What's next?!

As far as Star Trek stuff? I'd have to say I'd love to do something with the Steamrunner and something with this Antares design that's been floating around here (have a i mentioned I love that ship).

As for actual paying work, this is what I just finished for Cricket Magazine (kinda big piccie):

http://lobotomy.pleh.net/~flareupload/uploads/226/UnbridledFinal.jpg

Looks like some RPG work may be on the horizon too, but I'm still just talking about that... so nothing firm yet.

Alan, make some T-shirts! I always liked that world on a turtle painting of yours.

VERY nice. Any way I can score a 300dpi version for print 8x10?

To start: OMG I SO LOVE IT ABAN!

I haven't been checking the board so often - but I'm glad I came now - how long have you had it up?

I quoted Masao cause while looking at your artwork and reading the responses I was thinking - I so want a poster of this - maybe even something glossy like what came in the AMT/ERTL kits!

I would buy one too Aban.

Very nice.

I finally finished it last week. I'll just leave it up at Cafepress. Hmmm... t-shirts, you say... I think I can do that. The problem is, I don't have uber scans of that turtle piece handy. I'll have to rescan it before I can make a shirt at cafepress. I'd also like to make mousepads or something out of the nova and intrepid pieces i did back in the day. But again... no high res scans. I'll have to take them out of the frames and scan them again.

Proteus: Check your PM's. [Smile]

I forgot to ask - I can't remember what are all your earlier ST-associated works? I remember the Nova... And Seven of Nine.
