I just finished assembly and painting of the Starfleet Challenger Class. I had assembled many of the components beforehand, but the only pic available at the time was so bad, that I decided to wait. Well, as you know a cleaner image became available just before Christmas if I recall, and it was then that I began work on a model of it. I still intend to battle damage it and call it USS Buran when I can make waterslide decals for it. For now it's a brand new USS Armstrong. I even took a picture of mine at almost the same angle as the study model pic so it can be scrutinized. Let me know what you think of my interpretation.

It's terrific...like all your other models, you've outdone yourself. Can't wait to see your Elkins!

OMG! That is great. I'm DROOLING over the Challenger!! That's fantastic - the detail you have put into things like the correct corridors and the shuttle bay etc.

WOW!

There is another person around here who does nice models - who is that again? He did the Cheyenne etc.

I said to him, and I'm saying to you - It's crazy that we never saw some of those other starships more - I mean your models are so good - they could have easily been used for filming!!

Background ships at least - instead of the craziness that is the Raging Queen etc.

I dig Stephen's work....he's not too bad.
( kidding, kidding! Put down that X-Acto!)
Andrew, who built the Chyenne besides Soundeffect?
I have my crazy updat version (pics this week BTW) but aside from Shik, Me and Stephen I know of no other physical model builders at Flare.

Can I request a model!?! [Smile]

How about... I don't know - the AeroShuttle?? [Smile]

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

This sucks... I can't find any of his pics - and I can't remember his name. I think it had a 'z' in it.

Soundeffect - did you have an earlier website!?! Maybe it WAS you??

I can't think what to search on to find his posts.

Andrew

Ask and ye shall recieve!

Buy a great Aeroshuttle in 1/1400th (1.75" long) for $10 here:
http://www.federationmodels.com/
Look at the "products" listing and the at the federation models kits.
They offer a couple of nice Delta Flyers too in two sized with decals so all you's have to do there is minimal painting. [Wink]

I remember he also did a New Orleans.

Maybe it WAS Sound Effect - just at a different website? I remember he had a one-word name.

Also - Just looking at that Firebrand - do you photograph your models before adding battle damage?

Andrew

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

I believe the Firebrand's damage is part of the model.
Stephen is a "purest" and would'nt even twealk his DS9 Kitbashes to make them more plausable (like I do).
I don't think Stephen has a New Orleans (suprising actually!).
CHeck his website to be sure ans see his Challenger with repairs in progress to see some kewel work.

Yes, see my first post. The Challenger is wonderful!!

I'd love to see a 'clean' model of the Freedom Class. Plus if he'd really wanted to be a purist - he'd have to remove hulking great chunks of the saucer! [Smile]

You have you ships on your wall... where does SE put his?

Found his name!! It was FRUCTOSE!!

http://flare.solareclipse.net/cgi2/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=000547

Pity his links don't work anymore.

I know he did a New Orleans, a Cheyenne and a Belknap. AT LEAST.

The big NO and C were lovely.

I don't have any of his pics since my 'puter crashed last year.

Ha! A mix up here: The ship I meant was the damaged USS Challenger (Galaxy Class) not the Challenger class ship. [Wink]
So, if Who's on first and What's on second... [Razz]

I have Eric's website bookmarked (for whan I finally build my Springfield class.
His work is ezcellent, but it has'nt been updated in a while and he's gone AWOL from these shores...

Again - yeah - first post!! [Smile] I meant the USS Challenger Galaxy Class... what are you on? [Wink]

What did you think of my photoshop pic? It's now (accidently) my windows background! [Smile]

It has to be viewed - full size! [Smile]

Thanks everyone for the comments!

There was nothing yesterday and then I come by to check out the forum and BANG! 12 posts!

The Armstrong will eventually be damaged and made into Buran. (I placed the temp markings on it and just had to take pics [Smile] )

The Firebrand was battle damaged already.

I've got most of the components now to do the Elkins. Just a matter of starting it I guess. I've got a Springfield Class about 60% built. I did a New Orleans actually...I built it as my first Wolf 359 ship, but all I had for reference at the time was the small b&w photo from the 1st Encyclopedia, so mine didn't have a third torp launcher and I retained the neck from the Galaxy Class. The model has been broken apart again so I'll be making a corrected version sometime.

Very cool Photoshopped pic! I did a few of my own, you've probably seen them on the site. I did them for the Al-Batani, the Hathaway, the Challenger and a few I can't recall at the moment.

The USS Challenger is intended to be mounted beneath a scratchbuilt McKinley Station. I have the model of the drydock underway, but I lack a few resources to finish it at the moment, so it's on hold.

I have the parts set aside to do a 1/72 Aerowing with the Runabout model as a starting point. It'll have a pretty impressive wingspan!

Has anyone compared my Challenger Class to the slideshow photo? Does anyone disagree with my interpretation of parts, windows, lifeboats, etc.?

Keep the comments coming! [Smile]

It looks fine from the slide show model. I'm wondering though, are you going to add shuttles and runabouts to the NCC-71099 model since Federation Models offer them now along with the Galaxy Class shuttlebay interior?

HAHA thats how i said it should look Looks like im right hehe

Ok im done now

I'm still deciding if the Al Batani is firing of taking a extremely well placed shot from some off-screen agressor! [Big Grin]

....and I still say the Medusa is upside down! [Razz] [Razz] [Razz] [Big Grin]

I typically don't purchase online, not that I have any money right now. It'd be to late for the main shuttlebay, but small shuttles would look rather neat with the model. I'd prefer to make them myself than buy them. The only scaled little shuttle I've done is the Saratoga escape pod.

I just bought the shuttles, runabouts, Delta Flyer, and aeroshuttle online for my Voyager and Enterprise-D models along with the main shuttlebay interior since I'm paying someone to build it for me. They are bloody small though... looks hard to paint.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Painting the shuttles is'nt too bad: you just need to apply the colors with a fine brush or a technical pen (for the windows).
A friend of mine is thinking about making his shuttlebay roof removable to showcase the part: right now only about 2." can be seen and it's kinda a waste of a bueatiful part.
mabye you could light the shuttlebay from the inside.....I'll leave that to Soundeffect! [Wink]

Besides, I already built my Galaxy with open shuttlebay...and in tiny 2500th no less! [Big Grin]

The phaser fire is aimed at either something off screen, or missing the Medusa!! [Big Grin]

Take your pick! [Smile]

How do I make it look more like it's coming FROM the Al Batani?? a bit of a white core near the turret??

Also, I don't get this with the Firebrand. You BOUGHT the model damaged? Or YOU damaged it?

If you damaged it - are you saying you damaged it before you assembled it or AFTER you assembled it?

If it was intact and built before damage was applied - did you take some pictures??

Andrew

The Firebrand is not a model you can buy. I assembled it as a kitbash from parts from various models. I did build it nice and clean and applied the markings but that was about a year before I owned a camera, so no in progress pics were ever made. The damage was roughed out with a carving bit on a Dremel tool, and then I airbrushed Flat Black, Dark Gray, and drybrushed Steel in the Dremeled areas to simulate the damage. I didn't damage it as much as the graveyard scene depicts...I still wanted to see there was a saucer!

What in the nine hells were they thinking when they designed the Freedom class!?! [Confused]
I'm building one right noow, but I can't leave it the say the studio model depicts: it's senseless.
I'm swapping the insanely oversized torpedo launcher for a deflector dish and adding a torp launcher to the saucer's ventral side.
Any other improvements you'd reccomend before te final paintjob is done?

Maybe adding an impulse engine. I retained the saucer units for mine, but whatever they used for the Freedom and Niagara saucers, there were no impulse engines mounted on the saucers. There may or may not be an impulse engine on the Niagara, but it's pretty evident the Freedom Class miniature didn't have one.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

It will on mine: I used your ship as reference and decieded that the side Impulse engines look way better than one single block at the saucer's rear. [Wink]

Look kids! New pictures!

I have posted my new Nebulas (USS Beowulf and USS Neptune), my Chyenne class refit (USS Proxima, named for the lost Nebula class) and best of all:
My "Medusa" class USS Enkidu.
I used the CGI pics by The Red Admiral (look up that old thread!) as reference for this ship and tried to take pics that match his CGI shots. [Big Grin]
Opinions?
