I remember reading about this months ago, back when "Star Charts" first came out. It was probably Timo who mentioned here at Flare, though I'm not certain.

Anyway, I was cleaning out my browser bookmarks yesterday -- especially my "Cool Merchandise" folder, which is basically a "ooh, this is cool, I should buy it when I have the money" repository. Most of the stuff there I'd forgotten.

I finally took the opportunity to download LunarCell yesterday. This thing is very cheap -- US$20 -- but it's freaking awesome! The sheer variety and adaptability that the program offers is incredible.

The most obvious use I can make for this is for the "You're the Admiral!" maps that I've been making (and re-making) lately. Trivial, I know, but damn cool.

Here's a map that I threw together this afternoon while fiddling around with it. The LCARS framework is from one of the images in Harry's directory which I copied. I've included credit there -- hope you don't mind! [Smile]

All this was put together with Macromedia Fireworks MX. (LunarCell is actually a Photoshop plugin, but Fireworks can work with them too.)

akb, I skiped "Delta" because Mark said a while back that he'd drawn up an idea for a fourth scenario here at Flare, after Gamma finished up. (No idea when that'll be, though. [Razz]

Sector Epsilon will be starting in a week or so, over at the SCN. I've already posted a preview map for the new setting. (Flare members will notice that I borrowed one of Reverend's new logos for the random bumpy-headed-race-of-the-month.) [Smile]

I've used Lunarcell since it came out, but very sparingly and only recently discovered the mapmaking ability when I was looking for something to do a map with for an RPG I'm cooking.

This is a map I made of Pacifica. Yeah, everyone keeps telling me it's supposed to be a waterworld but I couldn't find any canon on that [Razz]

One thing this Pacifica has got going for it is that it probably has the longest continental beaches of all universe... Although I always thought of Pacifica as having its beaches on a series of small islands.

One wonders what sort of weather patterns one gets when the planet is "longitudally ribbed" like that. There won't be any major currents in the seas, for one thing. And there might be really extreme tidal effects in the relatively narrow straits opening to the northern sea. And coriolis winds blowing across all those successive continental mountain ranges and shallow seas might create nice chinook-style warming effects, and permanent rainy and sunny sides to each continent...

Is Lunar Cell based on random rendering (like the Corel Draw textures) or on drawing (like in the Civilization map editor)? I was always searching for a combination of both.

It is canon, though. It says so in "Conspiracy". "a conference on the ocean world of Pacifica" or something to that effect.

And Lunar Cell (at least the 30-day shareware version) is random, although you can manipulate all kinds of settings.

As I remember from my planetary sciences class in HS, a pelagic planet is defined as one that has like 90% or more of the surface covered in water. So it's not that there's NO land, just very LITTLE land. It could be like a giant archipelago.
