Uh oh... Looks like Paramount has basically called the ball on not having another TNG movie, by letting Pocket Books design Riker's USS Titan as a presumably new starship class. What's more, they're letting Pocket hold a contest for the ship's look! Details from a Trektoday.com report follows:

***

Also revealed at Shore Leave was that the Titan's starship class/designation would be revealed in the first book, and that a contest for fans to design what the exterior of the ship would look like will take place. Regarding the contest Palmieri has said, "No one should be too hasty trying to design the Titan just yet. The parameters will depend entirely on how the ship is described in the first novel. Plus, we haven't yet worked out all the details of exactly how the contest will be conducted, what formats are acceptable, who may participate, etc."

Palmieri has also said, "When Riker's ship is launched, the Dominion War has been over for four years, and Starfleet is at last ready to put this difficult period of its recent history behind it by returning in earnest to missions of peaceful exploration, diplomacy, and the expansion of knowledge. After the first novel about the ship going to Romulus, Titan will continue with character-driven stories emphasizing high adventure, personal drama, and scientific wonder."

***

As Palmieri said, we shouldn't be too hasty - but it looks like they don't want another battlewagon. Shall the GCS motif return? Perhaps when the contest is officially announced, we should hold a mini-contest here... Or hell, submit one communally. Dibs on the bridge. [Wink]

That's kinda cool.

I figured that if they did do another TNG movie in which the Titan would be shown, factoring the laziness & unoriginality of John Eaves into the picture, that we would just get the Enterprise-E digitally renamed the Titan.

I hope they're open to pencil drawings, not just to CGI.

P.S. They should have done this with the I.K.S. Gorkon. The ship envisioned by Keith DeCandido, with one or two small exceptions, looks almost exactly like the Vor'cha, when it is supposed to be a different class altogether.

I already had an idea what the ship might look like, but I guess I'll have to wait until the next book comes out. BTW, the first novel with the Titan, "Captain's Blood," gives no hint about the design.

The Titan should be a refit Galaxy class with three nacells, but maybe without the superphaser. I think starfleet already has enough different kinds of ships!

Here's a great design:
http://www.starshipmodeler.org/gallery8/mp_titan.htm

Mike Putnam made a new ship with cool elements of the Sovvie, a large saucer and cool nacelles....I'm undecided on the "Enterprise B" style secondary hull though.

It looks as fat as Tim Nix.

I like the idea of a communal effort - cause it is VERY obvious that it won't be open to individuals from outside of North America. Then maybe we could submit it under Charles Capps or something (or he could do it) and then we divvy up the prize? Or even have our own in-house raffle of the prize? Or is the prize to be Pocket-Book's sweat-shop worker/just getting your design used?

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

I don't mind that ship behind the link - I would have preferred something like that for the Enterprise-E. The Eaves-ness has been ironed out of it. Fits more the 'technology unchained' idea.

The other thing is - there is nothing to say that the Titan could be an older ship.

Posted by MarianLH (Member # 1102) on :

I think it's a safe bet the contest winner will be one that doesn't look backward, in terms of its "look". Whenever people in suits oversee a creative effort, it's always "new new new," and consistancy=stagnation. Look how much trouble they had keeping the Enterprise B an Excelsior.

Whenever the new iteration of a beloved series is consistant with its past, God kills a baby. Or something.

Who let these suits get such power over Trek? Grr.

I reckon we need more in the "Intrepid-era".

So something more between The Galaxy and the Intrepid.

Heh, or send them something that's already been seen but they don't really know - cause they don't pay attention and/or they aren't as obssessed with starships as we are! [Smile]

Or something corny... a Raging Queen-a-sized Intrepid class? [Smile]

Whether or not it's an older ship will likely be dealt with in the text of the book. Janeway got a brand spanking new ship her first time out, so why not Riker? I'd rather it not turn out to be some gigormous uberShip, though. Midsize and classy like the Intrepid works for me.

With a name like Titan, I would expect it to be rather large. Personally, I would prefer to see the model someone did of a Galaxy in Sovereign configuration, i.e. Galaxy saucer rotated 90 degrees and squash the neck some. Does anyone remember who did that? I think they called it Frontier class or something.

B.J.

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

Yeah, I think we all remember that. Vorlon did it. I wonder if he's still around here? I remember he did post a little while back.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

There have been times where the ship's name has something to do with the nature of the ship, i.e. Defiant, Excelsior, and sadly, Prometheus (Nebula version), but mostly, the name doesn't mean squat as far as what kind of ship bears it. Besides, if the name was meant to convey the size of the ship, it would be the Titanic (possessing the qualities of a Titan). Naming it the Titan implies they're simply referring to the Greek myth.

But I'm guessing the Suits will see it your way. The Titan will be at least as big as a Galaxy.

Our very own Soundeffect made that one:

I like it, but for the Titan, I've angle the nacelles in a "V" like the Soverign.

Well, the CGI model was different, and that's what he was talking about.

Geez.

Linky linky?

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Yup, the Frontier-class, designed by Adam Heinbuch.

http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/tacticalheavycruiser_frontr.jpg

There is a CGI version available, but I can't find Adam's site anymore.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Ug....it'd be nicer if it was'nt so cobbled together.

Aside from possibly more advanced nacelles, I cant see any advantage of that configuration at all.

Posted by The Vorlon (Member # 52) on :

Yes, I'm still around... As Lee requested, here is a composite of views of the Frontier mesh that Fabio and I made a couple years back...

Click the below image for a larger version.

Posted by The Vorlon (Member # 52) on :

Here's a couple more, a beauty shot and a revised Diagram. Keep in mind that these are 2 or 3 years old, and are not as fancy as contemporary works. Also, the diagram isn't 100% accurate to the CGI model... And I included the Development Logo, just for fun. Click on any of the below for larger versions.

Based on the description of what Pocket Books is looking for, I'd say that this design, with a few upgrades, would be an excellent canidate.

Niiiice CGI and I like what you've done with the "neck" but those Ambassador-hybrid nacelles look clunky on such a modern ship.

Posted by Wes (Member # 212) on :

The frontier is a good concept, but simply taking a Galaxy saucer and stretching it is bad taste in design.

Posted by Ultra Manjuice (Member # 239) on :

Rotated.

Ultra, you may be one of the few humans that would not pass the Turing test. I seem to remember a time when you posted more than just random oneliners.

The saucer was rotated, not stretched, is all.

I've always really liked Soundeffect's Mariner. It is the MISSING LINK between the Galaxy and the Intrepid!

Thank you, Vorlon, that was the one I was thinking of! Beautiful ship!

Yes, great design. With a bit of tweaking it might actually be a winner in a possible contest for the Titan.
I know it would be the design of choice for me - that is if I had any say in this... ;-)

There was a very good rendition of this (or a very similar) design on scifi-meshes.com... I can't find it right now, but it shared the "rotated saucer" motif with Sovereign details possibly added in. There was this GREAT picture to the ship in spacedock, and another of her fleeing a Borg cube...

ROTFLMFAO!

Nothing more fearsome than a torpedo with boobs. [Wink]

Boh - yes, that's the one! Fantastic ship.

As for the torpedo - isn't it phallic enough? I once had this idea of photoshopping a pic with Data carrying a casing in front of him lengthwise and asking female crew where he should put his big torpedo...

Getting back to the original topic here...

Although it's pointless to start coming up with designs before the description of the ship comes out, I'd like to say that although the designs shown so far here are good, I think something more original should be thought of. So far, all we have are Galaxy & Sovereign type ships with somewhat different configurations. Here's a thought: Don't use design elements from either. Make something new. The last newest 24th century design we've seen in Trek was the Nova class, and that was like six years ago. Be creative.

Just my $0.02

Wow that is a FANTASTIC ship - and fantastic artwork. Is that all just CGI? The second pic looks like it has paint-elements in it!

I love it. Now THAT should have been the E-E - not too far-a departure from the E-D/Galaxy.

Oh the link for the third one - the movie doesn't work: /dphoenix/bitter_homecoming.mov
Does not exist on this server.

Yup, that's the one I was talking about earlier. It's sort of a halfway point between the GCS and Sovvie, trending towards the former. One of my favorite fan designs EVAR.

Isn't it funny how a new guy comes along and tries to join in the conversation only to repeat what's already been said. You would think he would read the whole thread first and view relevent links before saying something. And the guy's been registered for a few months already and it's only his first or second post.

Its possible, Dak is multitalented

Hey, that reminds me of Dak Phoenix's Frontier class. It's over at Sci-Fi Meshes or on his site. {pistolwink}

No, but great as those designs are, I would hope that we could come up with something a bit less kit-bashy for the Titan.

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

Wow.

Posted by The Vorlon (Member # 52) on :

No, the Frontier Class is mine, not Dak's. I will admit, his is far more Sovereign-like than my version. The Frontier could be considered a contemporary to the Galaxy Class, not a successor, based on the styling cues.

I'd like to see a 5-view of Dak's Allegiance.

I'm really surprised that Paramount would let the publishers do this. I would think that the last thing they would want is a fan designed ship floating around on a sanctioned publication.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Not they'd use the design if there's ever another movie anyway.

Now when they can have Eaves make sometthing spikey and transforming.

THe real question: will Ryker have a joystick on the ship?

I spell the character's name with a "Y" because Liam requested it.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

That's "Manual Steering Column". As if Starfleet would just slap a video game controller on a state-of-the-art starship.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!!!

Oh wait...

Stay on target...It might be worth buying this bunged up movie just to get a cap of the young female ensign's gasp of shock and delight as his tool asserts itself.

Worst idea ever.

I always liked the "Take your pants off" look she gives him after Riker talks about using the bussard collectors to cram the gas up the bad guys throats.

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

There is just something tremendously gratifying about owning that joystick (a Gravis Blackhawk) in real life. Knowing that your pleasure poke of choice alone was deemed acceptable for insertion into the Star Trek universe, all the while fondling it gently as you dispatch zombie after zombie in Doom III, really intensifies your gaming experience. Playing, as they say, is believing.

A JOYSTICK FOR DOOM^3?!@?

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

Note: I do not actually play shooters with a joystick. That hasn't worked so well for me ever since some brainy kid thought it was cool to go 3D and everybody else copied his idea and left all non-mousers in the cold AND LOOK AT WHERE IT HAS GOTTEN US NOW.

If I ever meet that nerd in person, I'll break his glasses.

Just use the arrows: really, it's possible (mabye not).

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

I played Doom with just the keyboard. It was slightly more workable, at the time. I went all the way up to Jedi Knight like that, and then for some reason one day I used the mouse, and after a brief and headache-y transition period it was as if I had been raptured. I cannot imagine what I was thinking.

I have a similar story about the first time I used wasd instead of the arrow keys.
