Could you at least, I don't know, even make an ATTEMPT at discussing your topic? Go to the TrekBBS ... they like this kind of mindless posting ... !

To, uh, address the topic, such as it is: Is there any possibility of wormholes existing in our universe? Yes.

StarGates? No, the possibilty of travel through wormholes, maybe.

But if one takes the possibility of existence of the Stargate device as a given... How plausible is it then that what we see in the show would be happening right now in the bowels of Cheyenne Mountain and out there in the galaxy?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Would the Goa'uld orbital attack on Earth have gone unnoticed by everybody except SGC? What about the little weather-tampering gizmo? Or a secret USAF operation to transport a big flat container from Antarctica? A black hole opening inside Cheyenne Mountain? Would the existence of SGC still be a secret, now that Russians also have a gate of their own?

Does the Goa'uld empire sound plausible? Hundreds of Earth cultures transplanted to distant planets, where they have maintained their old ways for centuries yet learned to speak English? Advanced starfaring species who get defeated in combat again and again by 4-8 USAF or USMC personnel carrying submachine guns? Big system lords displaying strange restraint and not destroying Earth for all the trouble it has caused them?

I think some minor suspension of disbelief is required at some point.

The show has come up with one or two reasons for Earth not getting destroyed yet. (The Asgard, for one.)

Timo mentioned the second Stargate found in Antarctica. I saw the ep where they found it, but the only other mention I've heard of it is when one of the System Lords demanded the return of BOTH of the Tauri (I think that was the word he used for "Earth's") Stargates.

So whatever happened to the other Stargate? Is that how the Russians got one? I thought you could only use one at a time on any given planet. Please fill in a casual viewer, Timo...

The 3rd-season finale (or was it 4th?) features an alien ship (of the Asgard?) which has been infected with these robot spider things probably nicked off the Lost In Space movie. At the end the ship crashes into the Pacific (with barely anyone on Earth noticing). The Russians later salvage a Stargate from the wreckage. When they get it working it causes a few problems, but then that plot arc was written off by saying the US gave Russia a lot more aid money in return for not using it.

I'm glad they won't use it. I thought they might sell tickets - you know, $1,000,000 a pop.

I don't think there is an "Earth" symbol. Each gate is dialed using a combination of symbols. . .

Could stargate really exist? Well, let me ask you this: are there really a vast network of hyperspace jump gates out there among the stars?

IIRC, each gate is dialed by entering the 6 symbols that identify the coordinates of the end gate and then the 7th which identifies the gate you're starting from. So there would need to be the little A with the circle over it for anyone to use a gate on Earth. At least I think that's right.

Exactly. The last symbol is the "source" symbol. Which also means the previous gates seen on ships couldn't work, either (supposedly, they could be used anytime they were close enough to a planet). Someone wasn't thinking...

Or perhaps the symbols were encoded into the gates after their permanant positions were chosen. No problem there, except the massive logistics of such a thing. Then, the symbols are just helpful hints to us sentient beings who try to use the gates, not directions for the gates themselves. Thus, you could take our gate to Vulcan, and it'd still have the same destination code.

That's true...if the symbol represented the gate rather than the planet, it could still work. You just couldn't use two gates at the same time (as per the episode where they found Earth's second gate).

Though I still think the idea of having a gate on a ship is a dumb one. They've always been presented as planet side transport. Connected to the planet it's on in some way... And I love the way we see them presented on the different planets. How different cultures have come ot regard them and how many have figured out that they need to bury them to keep them from being used. Pretty cool.

Who built them anyway? Was it the Asgard? I think I've asked that question before...

From what I understand, the Goa'uld built the Stargates.

No one knows (or is telling) who built the gates. It certainly wasn't the Gou'ald. Or the Asgard.

So these various races have simply found them and are making use of them for their purposes? Both the Gou'ald and the Asgard have intersteller travel capabilities don't they?

Here's a thing though...In the ep where they found Earth's second gate, I remember someone asking Tealc what would happen if a planet's gate was destroyed or became unusable. He said they would install another one or something. So that means that the Gou'ald must have the ability to at least construct new ones even if they didn't originally build them, right?

I don't think so. So far, only the Tollan have shown the know-how to build one. I'm pretty sure the bad guys would just grab one from some other planet and ship it where they wanted to.

Earth is the orgin of most life in the galaxy. It has many names. its symbol is the triangle with the circle on top. (the one that appears in the stargate logo)

also, info from the movie shouldnt be applied from the show. hell look at Ra.

Kinda late, but just a thought: no one knew who built the hyperspace gates in Babylon 5 either (well, probably the First One, but they didn't take the credit). However, all the younger races figured out how to use and build them pretty quickly. They didn't appear that hard to reverse engineer and copy.

By "First One", do you mean Lorien?

I always got the impression that the Vorlon's built the jumpgates. They were the only one of the "First Ones" who actually used the standard form of jump-gate/point.

I have a StarGate, yet due to copyright laws I have to call it a FarGate. It's next to my t-shirt bearing a cartoon character which I admit looks like a Powerpuff Girl, but she has a mohawk and she's in a wheelchair, so it's totally different.

"Statgate" sounds like a NASA scandal of some kind.
Such a silly premise, really (though it's a guilty pleasure, as it's done so well).

I think they've become such a tongue-in-cheek joke that they really can't use them anymore. They went extinct and that's that. If they were still around you'd think that Asgard would have known about it. [Wink]
