I got the nod to view Hellboy at a private showing tonight and I figure I'll share the experience:

I really liked it....but I dont think the casual viewer will get some of the comic refrences or the prevalant Lovecraftian ambiance.

It's eye-candy factor beats the heck out of the last two Matrix movies and one of the baddies (Cronen) is one baaad mo-fo with those knightstick shaped blades.

If you're a fan of the comic (as I am) you'll note that abe sapien has some new psychic abilities that allows the movie to move along nicely in a flashback sequence.

John Hurt is, of course, excellent as Hellboy's "father" Prof. Broom (short for Bromhold).

Here's to hoping this movie makes a zillion bucks and we get to see more of Ron Pearlman as Hellboy: nobody can act in makeup in a believable way like he can and he's both funny and likable here (particularly in the rooftop scene).

Haven't seen the movie, but I concur with your opinion of Ron Pearlman. He da bomb, yo. He was awesome as Vincent, and I've liked him in everything I'm ever seen him in.

It might be good, and I respect Perlman, but the two trailers I've seen suck fuck.

Way too much CGI-spamming, that shit stopped being impressive back in 1998, damnit.
And too many characters/info being introduced at the same time, I just don't care!!

And so what if they are being chased by some sort of giant, grey tentacle-gorilla.
We still have no frame of reference as to what the fuck it is or who let it out, so why try to impress us with 20 seconds of choppy, disjointed combat??
It's not like it's going to win anyway. [Roll Eyes]

Ah well, at least that shortlived "put-in-scary/loud-frame-at-the-last-instant-when-everybody's-calmed-down" trailer tradition has stopped, thank god.
Even the damn Return of the King game-trailer had it.

On another note, I was a bit surprised they let Perlman's live-action voice stay in, instead of him doing a voiceover without the 2 pounds of silicone in his mouth and nose cavities.

It's not about hell in any way, really.

It's about the end of the world via the release of Lovecraftian "Old Ones"....by Rasputin.

...and a really old clockwork nazi-assasian that would probably kick Wolverines ass in five minutes.

...and they're chasing that grey monster thing- it's not chasing them.

It's fun and there's a lot of slapstick humor with Hellboy getting beaten up a lot but it's definitely worth watching.

Anyway, all this is such a coincedence, two times I've read about someone getting a private showing of a new movie this week, the first one was "The Passion of The Christ", and now "Hellboy". Is someone trying to tell me something?

I know it isn't about hell - but neither is H. Potter, that doesn't seem to stop them,

I'd like to see Hellboy, Passion, and Life of Brian all playing in the same theater - it would make me happy.

Become friends with managments at your local cineplex?

I'm not giving anything away by saying they're chasing monsters and fighting evil: even if all you know about Hellboy is from the commercials, you know that's the BPRD's job.

I also saw the trailer for the new Wil Smith vehicle I, Robot wich has fuck-all to do with the book in any way and features all the robots killing humans!
So much for the "three laws of robotics". [Roll Eyes]

I also saw a trailer for Arthur and that too looks like purest shit.

I think we're seeing a new subgenre developing here.
Yeah, five years ago it was all WWII-movies, five years before that it was asteroid movies.

Now everybody is remaking bloody and disgusting events in ancient history, it seems.
I'm sure we won't have to wait long for a 3-hour blockbuster of "Scarlet Pimpernel", with a wigged Colin Farrell throwing miniature guillotine-blades in all directions from upon his custom-built, historically inaccurate chariot, sawing down french revolutionaries where they stand.

This will of course lead to a new internet nerd subculture.

Yep, and the older, more professional cartwrights will come out of the woodwork and put the youngsters in their place.

Don't insult the good name of Wolverine by saying that Nazi Power Ranger / Cobra Commander Hybrid would kick his ass. Wolverine would just go berzerker rage on his ass. [Wink]

I haven't seen the movie because the trailers look incredibly stupid and I was never a Hellboy fan to begin with but so far everyone I've heard who's seen it (including you) has given it a positive review so maybe I will go see it afterall. It's not like there's any other good movies out now anyway(at least until Kill Bill Volume Two comes out in a few weeks [Cool]

After watching the movie and then seeing the commercials all day today, I can say that the commercials are a really bad chop-job of about twenty scenes (even the commercial's dialogue is spliced together, omitting whole sentences!).

Go watch it, Bond: it's a really fun flick.

Well, I liked it. It did have a strong "seen one CGI monster, seen them all" feel, but it was neat, and it had some really cool premises, though I thought the film told its story in a pretty run of the mill way.

I felt like it promised a lot, but then couldn't deliver. I was really getting into the first half, but then it seemed to really fall apart and the clich�s kept piling up, and it got pretty bad at the end. Lost any sense of nuance. A shame. Looked great though, and it was very fun as a matinee.
