A bit silly, but fun. A villain who wasn't really a villain, and a threat that actually turned out quite beneficial to those concerned (except Stacey, of course). Why weren't there more than two security guards?

And, of course that major twist at the end. It's a classic gambit - the news that Rose is returning at the end of the season has been leaked everywhere, so the solution: stick her in (albeit briefly) right at the beginning! She's obviously looking for the Doctor just like Donna was. What will happen? Rose will end up dead, is a safe bet. She hesn't concocted some method of transdimensional travel just to tell him she's gotten over him, so I'm guessing they'll have to find some way to remove her from the equation and marooning her in a parallel universe has been done already.

And, Bernard Cribbins! Donna's mum reminds me too much of Rose's mum though.

Next week, Peter "Malcolm "Fucking" Tucker" Capaldi!

Hopefully, they won't turn the Doctor and Donna's assertions at the end of the episode into a "doth protest too much" situation. A companion without sexual tension will be a nice change.

Yes, it was silly and probably not a 'classic' episode. However, as a season opener, it does work in getting Donna and the Doctor back together. I do think they could have done a little more on the "Racnoss children" vs. "Adipose children" angle, but maybe Donna has some time to confront the Doctor on this later.

I really liked the final few scenes, though. I was afraid Donna was going to be romantic when she talked about 'finding her man', but I was very happy with the Doctor being aware of his 'issues' with Martha, and the very clear statements by Donna. It will be refreshing to have a non-romantic companion.

Anyone else notice that Donna's car and Rose's jacket were both "TARDIS blue"? Someone's been watching Smallville too much.

Lee, how is Donna's mum like Jackie? She's a lower middle class suburbanite who nags her daughter about her lack of drive, while Jackie was a working class council estate chav who had settled into her little rut of mediocrity.

It was more the look than anything - faded bottle blonde, whatever their housing and clothing situations. Superb little bit of editing, that kitchen rant sequence, though.

Yeah, the kitchen scene was quite well done, unlike the bit at the end when the Doctor was talking to the villian in the beam and she magically came to a stop to have a chinwag, then has a Wile E Coyote moment as she realises the beam has switched off.

Other than that, it was okay. Catherine Tate wasn't really, really irritating, as I imagined she'd be. Though, I don't know about anyone else, but I discovered I definitely can't lip read. [Smile]

"Donna?"
"Doctor?"
"Wh- what?"
"Oh. My. God."
"How?"
"It's me!"
"Yeah, I see that."
"Oh, this is brilliant!"
"What the hell are you doing there?"
"I was looking for you!"
"What for?"
"I was reading, on the Internet..."

And the rest of it is hard to figure out, since they keep cutting away from her. I think there's something about "traipsing along" and "you!", but I'm not sure of the rest.

Yeah, that's about the point when I lost track of the conversation.

Just to be clear is this the new episode I'll be watching on SciFi in a few weeks or did I miss something here in the States?

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

It's the season opener, I think it hasn't been on in the US yet.

It's amazing how the mouthed words "What the hell are you doing here/there?" can be so recognisable.

...well if you see it often enough... [Wink]

You know, someone really needs to take all these moments where the Doctor says "What!?" and edit them into Pulp Fiction...

The DW Confidential episode shows the bit of the script that describes what Donna is saying during her last mime sequence. It roughly goes over what she told the Doctor again later after they meet face to face: she heard of Adipose on the internet, it looked like trouble, trouble = you, so she snuck in, waited, showed up here, and that's when THAT lot... I guess she froze on the "TH" in "THAT lot", explaining her tongue. [Smile]

Good episode, and a fun opener. The Doctor admits she made a mistake with Martha, knowing she fancied him but taking her along anyway even if he didn't feel the same. Donna is purposefully along for the ride and wasn't really ASKED byt the Doctor, though the recurring theme of just how lonely he is continues on. As I've mentioned earlier, Donna is physically older than the Doctor, and this should play into the dynamic. On the flipside, with Donna being the same age as many of the parents of the kids watching the show, one wonders if we'll lose some of the younger viewers.

The adipose (literally "fat") monsters will make great toys come christmas, and I have not been able to watch a Charmin commercial withouth thinking of them for a while. Adult Adipose must look like Barbapapas. [Razz] Apparently the folks at WETA who developped the software that created hordes of orcs in the LOTR movies were called in to make the legions of fat babies, and I guess it worked. The story itself was pretty simple, and with only two people dying the body count for a typical Doctor Who adventure is pretty low.

And Rose... Well, we'll see. I liked her (and Billie Piper's portrayal), but I was glad to have her move on. We're just getting AWAY from the Doctor as a romantic lead - why can't we stay that way for a while?

Thanks!

Anyone know if SciFi is showing the Christmas special and the episode with Davison?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

On the commercials, they've been showing clips from the Xmas special, so I would guess they're going to show it. I wouldn't really call the thing with Davison an "episode", and I doubt they will show it.

It's on youtube, I'm sure. Unfortunatly I'm guessing thats as good as it gets in the US. They might release it as an extra at some stage on one of the DVD sets.
