Okay, I'm surprised I didn't find an older thread about this, but I'm sure we all saw the leaked footage of the "TR2N" trailer they showed at Comic Con last year, now called "Tron Legacy". Anyway, as excited as I am about the movie, it was a bit hard to look at those tiny grainy pics and decipher what was going on. Well, the full HD version of that (test?) trailer has been put on the net here.

Looks like they not only have Jeff Bridges back, but Bruce Boxleitner as well! I realize I may be seeing the original through digitally enhanced glasses, but I loved it, and this new movie sounds like it has potential.

Hmmm... wasn't Jeff Bridges the good guy in the first movie? I'll have to watch it again.

Ground breaking CGI and 80s childhood nostalgia aside; in terms of story and acting the original wasn't exactly Oscar material. Given the talent involved this time around, I think they'd have to try very hard to make a worse movie.

If nothing else it'd be nice to see a clean, minimalist use of CG effects rather than the busy, overtly bombastic rubbish we've been seeing of late.

No shit- I saw an ad for some assinine kid's movie with a "wishing rock" and it was watching a bad demo reel.

I'm psyched- the old Lightcycle is in there too- "they say it's still the fastest thing ever rendered"...

This just might be the perfect candidate for the IMAX 3-D theatre.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

It's going to be shown at IMAX 3-D says at the end of the promo.

I totally forgot to post anything here about it!! I've been watching it heaps since I found it a few days ago!

I love it! I love the sinister music.

There's also a released track of some music by Daft Punk for the movie.

Very cool stuff.

I got out the old sound track by Wendy Carlos and have been listening to it. I'm also going to put the DVD back on! [Big Grin]

I am fighting the urge to see this twice as I'm going to see it in IMAX 3D when in Orlando after Christmas. I might end up caving, though...

Just came back from seeing it this evening.

Really enjoyed it and the 3D was well used i.e. no pokey-in-the-eye type gimmicks. The plot and characters were much better than the original and the little references were nice and subtle.

Though I'm sure this is going to get dissected to bits on the interwebs and it'll become the latest film to fashionably dump on...before becoming the latest film to fashionably label as underrated. I'm just going to say right now that it was good and there was a lot more to it than a bunch of flashy effects. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! [Wink]

The only thing I will say is that the face replacement tech still isn't quite right. While it's miles better than the horrible attempts in the X-Men movies, there are still quite a few shots where it looks...off. Mind you there are some scenes where it worked really well (like *SPOILER* Clu having a flashback at Flinn's place */SPOILER*)

Looking at how they ended it, I'm sure they're thinking sequel or even trilogy.

gads i hope not. But yeah, its not you driving the movie, its the backers.

Saw it this eve with the dada. To me, i was thinking both remake & sequel to the 1982 Tron. Very engrossing, very entertaining and very making me VERY much wish Dysney pawned to another label to they could make a PG-13 or R-rated version. I so wanted more violence for some reason. guess well wait until the summer for the video's extra violence cut from the film.

another thing that came to mind watching the previews & the film. you think Oliva Wilde could make a passable Alita/Yoko/Gally?

My sentiments pretty much echo Reverend's. I really enjoyed the movie, the visual effects, and the nods to the old movie. The lighting is really dark for pretty much the whole movie, which pissed me off a bit because I couldn't see when I tried dipping my pretzels in the cheese sauce. [Smile]
Flynn Jr. was a bit dull, but not horrendously bad. Yeah, Clu's face wasn't 100% perfect, but considering he was a computer program I found any discrepancy to be almost apt. It didn't quite work that well for younger Tron, though. That's probably why scenes of him were kept at a minimum.

And as for Tron...

I understand that it might have been because of thoughts for a sequel, but I kinda found the whole Tron thing awkward. Even though he was supposedly derezzed, the movie seemed to give hints that he wasn't really dead, and that he would eventually return. Well, that was all fine and good...until we find out that he's that evil masked red guy w/ the two disks because he's now under Clu's control. Okay, still good I suppose...but then in what I thought was a rushed ending, he quickly reverts to a good guy again for no apparent reason, and then turns blue as he's falling...and then we never see him again! (Not to mention that we never see his face, so he's kinda kept as just a generic bad guy. Huh?

^I smell some deleted scenes focusing on exactly that. There's so much going on in the film that I'm sure they cut some stuff out to keep it all focused on Sam, Flynn & Quorra.

Speaking of which, was anyone else pleasantly surprised by Quorra? From what little I'd gathered from the trailers I'd taken the character to be little more than a spunky sidekick and one dimensional love interest. I loved that I was wrong on all counts and that she was surprisingly innocent and less of a love interest for Sam and more of a surrogate daughter for Flynn.

As for the face replacement, the argument that it works because Clu was a program falls rather flat when the 1989 Flynn looked just as dodgy. Not a big deal though, it's just the limitations of the technology (though I admit I'd like to see if the Avatar people could have done better.)

I liked the explanation that the world we were seeing in this movie was a "new system". Took away any expectation that it would look like the one from the old movie and in fact explains why it's so much more advanced.

I didn't like the way Tron was used in the movie. Shown just enough to want to see him more. The revelation that he was Clu's enforcer was poorly done. Should've been a much bigger deal.

I thought Sam and Q striking the pose from the original poster at the end was kind of cool.

Also: Olivia Wilde = the Hotness.

The way Tron himself is used in this new movie was one of the biggest disappointments. They turned him into a cheap clone of Darth Vader, without any of the emotional resonance. Tron = Rinzler could have been done well, but it wasn't.

I can't say I was too disappointed at how Tron was used since disappointment is a reaction to expectations unmet. Prior to the seeing the film I did notice a conspicuous lack of Bruce Boxleitner in a glow-in-the-dark leotard in any of the promotional material. So I went into it not expecting much more than a brief cameo so the revelation that the random henchmen was a re-purposed Tron and he saved the day in the end was--believe it or not--a welcome surprise.

That's the feeling I got too... That BB didn't really have any interest in being a starring role in the film. So we got a few minutes of him as Alan and a few minutes of him as Tron. The rest of the time Anis Cheurfa played Rinzler. We didn't even get to see a cool scene like the one in the proof of concept trailer where his helmet lights up and *surprise* it's Tron underneath.

Before the spoiler, I'd just like to say I really liked the film. It was well written, and fits in nicely with the original.

All the cool bits were very cool, and they didn't overwhelm the plot. Speaking of which, other than Inception (which was a bit of a case of overplot) I've noticed a staggering lack of originality/plot/substance/memorability in the majority of films this year (not all, but most).

I liked the 3D too (allthough I'm not a great fan of it because I allready have an awkward unattractive pair of glasses to wear without having to put the 3D ones on top). Far better in terms of entertainment value then 'The Blue Man Group Does Titanic' and it didn't drag like that one either.

Not really a $POILER but what the hell

I liked the whole reveal, but I agree with Aban, the visor reveal would have been cool. But I thought it was Jeff Bridges in the Comic-con triler whi did that, wasn't it? Also, Old Jeff is most deffinately The Dude.

Yah. The visor reveal in the trailer was Jeff Bridges/Clu. I'm just saying a scene like that one that revealed Rinzler's identity would have been cooler than Flynn just saying his name when we couldn't even see Flynn say it. There was just no emotion to it. We didn't get to see Flynn's emotion. We didn't feel any emotion... it was just kind of "Oh. Yah. Ok."

And then they were on to something else.

And Jeff is totally the Dude. I love how he can sound concerned and totally evil at the same time:
Clu to Quorra: "Where's your disk?"

I saw it, and I liked it!! Sure it could have been better, but it wasn't BAD. I just watched the first one again on DVD. Great movie too.

I loved the atmosphere of the whole thing oh and the soundtrack was fantastic.

Wished they showed Sam being digitised.

Liked it a lot. Funny thing is, wasn't there a pic or three surfacing of the studio in Vancouver where this was being shot, showing some extras dressed up as programs from the old ENCOM system with the spandex and all? It was good that we didn't have a visual reference to the previous Grid (IMO it would have looked pathetically cheap compared to the foam rubber suits we saw here), but I wonder if there was a missing scene somewhere that was shot of the old system.

Regarding Tron himself, I wonder if there was a real-life reason they didn't have him there. Perhaps the digital model of his face wasn't as detailed as Clu / younger Flynn, given taht we only really saw him in "low rez" flashbacks. Granted we only needed to see his face behind a visor and some digital water, but perhaps they didn't want to have two rubber botox performers? Or maybe more likely, perhaps they want to keep Tron for a possible sequel?

And I wonder a little about what Clu really wanted, or if he was simply nuts. Actualizing a computer program into a human body is one thing, but what about the tanks, planes and huge-ass carrier? What would we end up with, Disney's Automan?

Mark

Posted by Pensive's Wetness (Member # 1203) on :

That's actually a good point, Mark. What would have come out the rabbit hole? Clu's magic army?

or a legion of CLUeless undocumented illegals? after all, Quarra became flesh & Blood (or not?), wearing clothing suitable to her style... im pretty certain Dysney is going hump the living shit outta this for a 3rd movie (likely shit) to answer all this questions, nobody in their right minds should even be asking...

Why would a sequal to Legacy be shit!?! Infact it should iron out all the kinks and possibly build apon what it has set out! I reckon it has the potential to be completely kick-arse!

I wonder if Quorra would have finger prints or a belly button?

I don't think CLU really had any idea of what was on the outside.

I'd love if they got into what Quorra really is in the real world! She's just information transformed into matter. Could she end up with super-human abilities??

Also - Flynn's own code is part of her iDNA (just made that up). So you could say that she is his creation. Like a daughter. So if Sam and Quorra got it on... wouldn't that be a bit... wrong!?!

I wondered about that too. How did Clu know what would happen to all his cool weapons and stuff in the real world? Maybe they'd be materialized as Tonka toys. And where would they appear?

I can just see that carrier and his whole army being rematerialized in Flynn's Arcade, then the building collapsing on them. End of invasion.

exactly. actually it would whipe out the block, if it finished 'porting into reality before the power was knocked out at all (either partially or not)... has any of the animators said 'what-if's about it? i imagine they thought the same, logically i hope...

but no, i really dont want a sequal. i mean, did anyone want T3 or Alien3 or 4?

Clu wasn't nuts. He's a computer program. He was acting out his programming, which was to create the System based on Flynn's idea of perfection. When things started changing (i.e. the emergence of the ISO's), Clu couldn't adapt to the change because his programming didn't allow him to. So the only choice he had was to de-evolve the System back to the status quo and destroy anything that wasn't part of Flynn's original idea. In that sense, he's the perfect villain.

As for what would happen th Clu's army and machines? If Sam could enter the System with his physical belongings intact (his clothes in this instance, unlike in the first movie where Flynn was immediately dressed like a program), then it's logical to assume that it works both ways. But who knows?

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Well that quantum teleporter or whatever that was is basically converts matter to energy and back again. So in theory it'd recreate the physical shape of everything Clu sent through, but whether or not any of it would work in our world is another question. After all, here we have things like gravity, atoms and other physical laws that makes much of what works fine on the grid completely useless.

Mind you we did see that a program could transition intact so just by the sheer manpower and the element of surprise, Clu would have an enormous advantage, even if the recognisers would appear as giant inert blocks.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Well, he did have a lot of troops, but if all his machinery suddenly stopped working, it's not like he could take over the world. He'd essentially be bringing (let's say) several thousand troops into completely unknown territory, fighting a completely unknown force on their turf without weapons or vehicles.

Even if his technology did function on some level, he wouldn't get very far. Say he starts wiping things out the moment he arrives. How far do you think he'd get before the US military mobilized everything it had and completely surrounded him? He'd have no retreat option and no supply line, not to mention the sudden need to provide food, drink, and bathroom breaks for several thousand troops.

Posted by Pensive's Wetness (Member # 1203) on :

hense why i think another movie would be stupid... unless it wasn't even about the grid world, but the repercusions of having Quarra in our world (but then it's no longer called Tron but something else entirely...)

Great movie! I didn't get to see it in 3-D but it still looked good in 2-D. I found the idea of Clu and his merry men still making it through the portal kinda suspenseful, even if it the science behind it was questionable. For what it's worth, Sam still bled like a human in the Grid, so maybe the physiology of the 'Griddites' would remain intact in the real world? I'm not really disappointed at Darth Tron, though I can't see his redemption as enough of a subject to warrant a third film. I mean with Clu's regime toppled and most if not all of his army destroyed, who would be the new villain? Also I didn't really understand Clu's hatred of the ISOs, since they seemed indistinguishable from non-ISOs save for that mark on their arms. I guess he just grew jealous of them once Flynn became interested in them.

Also the music was great, Daft Punk really outdid themselves. It kinda reminded me of music from the Half-Life games.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Also wondering again - did the whole movie take place inside that computer in Flynn's secret office? I would assume that the original ENCOM computer where it all originally happened has evolved further. Technically the 'games' on the grid were representations of the different computer games of the time - pong, snakes etc. What popular computer programmes would be played in the ENCOM system now-a-days? WoW? Halo? Farmville!?! Hahah!

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

I highly recommend checking out the graphic novel that serves as a bridge between TRON and TRON Legacy. It explains Clu's hatred of the Isos: basically, they're completely random and cause instability in his perfect system.

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

What about them is random exactly? That they spawn out of nowhere? What's the name of the novel BTW.

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

Yeah, they spawned out of the system. Flynn didn't create them and neither did Clu. The novel is called TRON Betrayal. I'm sure you can find it at your favourite comic book store. Myself, I bought it (and all my other current TRON mechandise) at Disney parks. [Smile]

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

I'll have to get Betrayal to look through, sounds good. [Smile]

I think it's implicitly stated, albeit vaguely, that the movie takes place inside Flynn's server in the basement lab, literally the "new grid". The first movie took place in and around ENCOM's own servers, which in 1982 may have had the equivalent of industrial-strength modem connections with other servers (hence how the MCP was stealing other programs from SAC and other businesses). The individual arcade boxes obviously weren't networked, and I'm willing to believe that the game being played at the top of the original film was simply Sark and some other program playing on the grid as a parallel to the much simpler version in the arcade, just to show that INSIDE every computer in 1982 you have little guys in spandex outfits running around on awesome motorbikes.

Flynn's grid was obviously ahead of its time, and yet large enough chunks of it could be downloaded into Sam's keyfob. One does wonder then what the "actual" internet looks like from the inside now, though, with wifi, social networking and such. The original implies that programs generally look after the people that wrote / compiled / used them. What would it be like now? What if Sam anad Q hooked the laser up to a laptop hooked up to a Starbucks wireless hotspot and hit go?

And I'm still thinking Clu had a bad sector somewhere. His job was to create the perfect system, yes - and he did it. Ambition to rebuild the world of his creator after his grid, or any ambition outside of the grid whatsoever, should not have been part of his original programming. However his desire to conquer the world outside came about, I think it was sparked by the same thing that sparked the creation of the ISOs, which ironically are indirectly his creation as it is.

Mark

Always nice to see Bruce in work. Which reminds me, one of these days I should try playing Tron 2.0 again. Never did get much past the first level, only really used it for the light cycle grid.

Yeah I was thinking of buying a copy from this website that sells old games for cheap. The game seems to be really rare, and used copies fetch for ridiculous prices on Amazon. There's a game out there based on the recent movie, but from what I hear its kinda bland.
